Read them when I was a teenager.

First one was okay. Supremacy was the best, what with Bourne tearing up shit in Hong Kong and China. Ultimatum just went off the deep end and was a bit turd.

I hate the stuff, think it's rather BS, personally.

He's pretty dope. Love W&P and many of his novellas and short stories.

Anna Karenina is over-rated though.

You Shall Know Our Velocity.

I really like Eggers othewise but this book was a big pile of shit that I couldn't stand to finish.

I dunno, maybe it's because she's a bit wishy-washy? A lot of the other characters are really exaggerated, larger than life (Littlefinger is super crafty, Cersei a super bitch, etc) and Danny is just sort of... normal-ish, in character terms by comparison?

Compared to the others she just wasn't nearly as interesting to read.

Currently reading Balzac's "Old Goriot". 2/3 the way through and it's pretty good.

As a former bookseller, good luck, OP.

I have an interview at a publisher tomorrow, lets hope we both do well!

The First Law trilogy (starting with The Blade Itself) is a great recent fantasy series. Plenty of action so should keep you interested.

And Hobbit may not have epic battles until the end but is still an awesome book that you should at least try.

Christ, there is a world of difference between HDM and Chrestomanci.

HDM isn't "great" in my view, merely decent, but Chrestomanci is still ten times worse and more childish. If you're going to recommend some DWJ at least pimp the good stuff like Howl's Moving Castle and The House of Many Ways.

Earthsea is great and I really enjoyed the recent First Law trilogy by Joe Abercrombie.

Quite true, it's a dangerous business just crossing the road.

But don't astronomically increase your odds of being blown up by joining the military (unless that's what you're after).

>Then I remembered Jon Snow in A Song of Ice and Fire and realized I could go from whiny little bitch to badass soldier just like he did.

Or you could get blown up and die. OP, don't be dumb and join the military.

But during the couple of periods of U/E that I've experienced I've always enjoyed reading Burn Collector. It's an empathetic thing.

Yeah, but Count Zero sucks.

I don't like him at all and think there are much better Japanese authors from that time (Kawabata) but it's all personal preference.

Johnny Mnemonic was pretty awesome, wasn't it?

>> No.729178 [View]

I don't like it much either.

People like because they think everyone else does and that because he's Japanese, and critically quite well regarded, that they're reading some sort of literary fiction and that makes them feel smart.

In truth: Murakami does have a lovely writing style. It's very easy and flowing (in spite of his constant references to music and food). A couple of his novels are great, some are decent and some are rather poor. But which books you think fall into which category often varies on the person.

Just try and see what you think.

Nice ideas, pity it's an appalling novel.

Rooibos is pretty awesome, I gotta admit.

Definitely need other teas for variety (and caffeine).

He's okay. Couple of really good novels, a few decent ones and some others that aren't so good. Which novels you think are which tends to depend on your tastes.

Personally, my favourite is Dance, Dance, Dance. After The Quake is my favourite of his short story collections.

>> No.723244 [View]

The ending is pretty simple isn't it?

It's an admission that the narrator is basically still lost in his ways, but he admits to Midori and himself that he needs her. He's caught up in everything, in society, and needs that relationship.

Choke is shit.

But then the more you read Palahniuk the more you'll realise he's a one trick pony and that reading his books brings diminishing returns.
