By all means, read Plato, but he is not actually relevant to the contemporary Left or Right, aside from through intertextuality. Nor are Aristotle, Cicero, Aurelius, Augustine, Machiavelli or Hobbes. Luther is the most important German. It was with Lutheranism that Germany entered the stage, not to mention the first stages of Neuhochdeutsch, which Luther set down.

Think about it - the trajectory of Enlightenment, Counter-Enlightenment & Marxism are all German & would be impossible without the reformation - Luther, Kant, Hamann, Herder, Fichte, Schelling, Hegel, Feuerbach & Marx.
