Orwell took pride in being resilient. He subjected himself to discomfort when it was necessary, but I think he also wanted to confirm to himself that he wasn't an effete intellectual like so many of his contemporaries on the left. He joined a militia in Spain, which I can assure you is much more restrictive of freedom and comfort than being told not not to go out for nonessential tasks.
