Ellison has good ideas but, personally, I think his writing is pretty average. Heck, Gibson doesn't write shorts any more but Burning Chrome, as collection, is better than any one volume of Ellison's stories, IMO.

As for good living short story writers? William Gass is still alive and he wrote some very good stuff. Alice Munro is no slouch. I'm not a huge Murakami fan but some of his shorts are worthy. And, heck, not consistently brilliant but Dave Eggers has written some very good short stuff too.

Definitely some Ishiguro. "Remains of the Day" for sure, "The Unconsoled" is divisive but I think it ought to be a considered a modern classic too.

OP's never read the Iliad or Odyssey.

Personally, Ishiguro is one of the few modern novelists that I think has been really top class over the last twenty years.

Remains of the Day (1989), The Unconsoled (1995) and Never Let Me Go (2005) are all great.

Just because Infinite Jest is really fucking long doesn't mean it's really fucking good.

DFW is good but not great. His non-fiction is better than his fiction too.

Yeah, I'm not sure I'd start with Rincewind... I think the Guards series is the best place to start and go from there.

Probably "The Winter Market" and "Hinterlands" by Gibson.
