Phaedrus includes the first-ever "Is that a scroll in your pocket or are you just happy to see me" joke.

>How so? I read all five and it didn't feel like YA to me.
They're not YA. The fact that the first one includes a description of a 13-year-old's wet vagina as she's about to get fucked by her 30-year-old husband is, itself, probably enough to disqualify them as YA. Describing them as such is probably just a way for people here to admit they enjoyed the books while still remaining superior to the books' mainstream fans.

"Heavy-handed" is a good way to describe this movie. There are some things about it that are downright annoying, but the film also has some interesting qualities that keep drawing me back to it despite my misgivings. It's also what prompted me to read "Infinite Jest."

That's not much of a critique.

Are these pronunciations accurate? The first one has a high dislike ratio, which made me skeptical.

What's the proper way to pronounce "Nausicaa"? What's the proper way to pronounce "Phaeacia"?

I expect something like that, but I'm still curious.

Agreed; I'm eventually going to read "Mein Kampf" just to see what's in it.

Ralph Manheim is a great translator, though I haven't read his "Mein Kampf."

My god, you may as well bitch at Goethe because he didn't invent Faust.

I was just reflecting on how unforgettable almost everything Shakespeare ever wrote is. I mean, take this bit from Hamlet; it's not even particularly famous as Shakespeare soliloquies go, but it's still nearly flawless:

Witness this army of such mass and charge
Led by a delicate and tender prince,
Whose spirit with divine ambition puff’d
Makes mouths at the invisible event,
Exposing what is mortal and unsure
To all that fortune, death and danger dare,
Even for an egg-shell.

Shakespeare's mastery of style was so absolute that even a passage like this doesn't leap out as among his most memorable work.

What a drab, miserable production that was. Polanski's adaptation is superior.

Does this film win /lit/'s approval, or its contempt?

For those who haven't seen it, it's shot through with literary references and features (a fictionalized version of) Christopher Marlowe as a leading character. It also includes a cameo by Infinite Jest.

If you want to watch it, I strongly recommend the 2011 Met Opera production starring Mariusz Kwiecien. It’s available to rent from Met Opera On Demand.
