Yeah, it is. I know it's not the most talked about collection of his but it seemed like a nice, small introduction.

You've read it?

Pfft. As a superior Londoner I use charity shops, second hand stores (Bookmongers), Foyles, the London Review Bookstore (for more literary titles) and indies like West End Lane Books when I'm in the right area.

Online is all about bookdepository .

I don't read much non-fiction but recently I did read Maryann Burk Carver's "What It Used To Be Like" about her marriage to Raymond Carver. It was less revealing than I was hoping it would be though.

Read some of the Vietnam era literature earlier in the year and Michael Herr's "Dispatches" was awesome. Among the best books I've read this year.

Made this one for novellas a few days ago.

Got the fat Chronicles of Amber compilation sitting on my shelf. Really need to get round to reading it.

It's true that I only read Howl's Moving Castle because of Ghibli but I was really surprised to discover what an enjoyable book it is (sooooo much better than the film). House of Many Ways by the same author was also good.

I thought I was on to something with DWJ but then I read the first two Chrestomanci novels and they were bad to terrible.

I like Equal Rites a lot and I'm surprised at the lack of love it gets. I think it's a perfectly good place to start.

But, really, it depends on if you intend to go through the series entirely chronologically or by character series first.

Bumping, as here's the updated version.

Thanks for all the suggestions (some listed here I still haven't added for various reasons) but keep 'em coming if you think something's still missing.

I'm working on the update, thanks for the input on what I've missed.

How about "recommended" instead? I'm not aiming for a definitive list.

Read also:

Raymond Carver
Frank O'Connor
Alice Munro
William Gass
J.G. Ballard
Haruki Murakami
V.S. Pritchett
Isaac Babel
Hemmingway
Maupassant

That'll get you started.

I make no bones about this being a far from definitive list, this is the stuff I've read, that's why I'm asking for help filling the gaps. So give me your recommendations and I'll get round to updating the list.

Well, I just like the novella format a lot and thought about putting this image together, that's all really.

Hey, e/lit/es, I've spent a lazy Sunday putting together this list of novellas (standard size books of little more than 200 pages or less) as I assumed we didn't have an image for this format.

Thoughts? This was all off the top of my head, so what's missing?

I only really want novellas that can be purchased individually (not as part of a collection) and I don't want more than a couple by any single author.

Start with something good but not one of his doorstops.

The Cossacks is a great introduction.

Generation X - okay
Life After God - really good
All Families Are Psychotic - shit

Minimalist fiction isn't decent unless you're WWTAWWTAL era Raymond Carver and Hempel ain't anywhere near that (despite Chuck Palahniuk's lavish praise).
