What's Neon Genesis Evangelion of /lit/?

/a/ here. What's the literary equivalent of Neon Genesis Evangelion?

Can you guys recommend me any romance novels/short stories you consider to have beautiful prose and something beyond airplane-novel depth? The only love stories I know of are the shit with horrendous covers my grandmother reads (which in her own words she likes the best when she knows what's gonna happen pg1).

I absolutely loved the chapters of Stoner dealing with his love affair, and in Neon Genesis Evangelion I really adored the relationship between kaworu and shinji (inb4 animu shit eating pleb)

TD;LR I want a romance novel/short story that:
1. Has fantastic prose
2. Is not entirely shallow
3.(prefferably but not required)Is about a homosexual relationship.

I don't mind if it has an unhappy ending (or even if it's unhappy in general).

I want to read a novel that features the de/reconstruction of a popular motif/theme/whatever in a way that blows my mind away.

To give you an idea: In the domain of animation Neon Genesis Evangelion and Panty & Stockings are reconstructions of Christian motifs in the manner I have in mind.

So, suggestions please.

Is it a book? No. Is it a music album? No. Is it a play? No.

It's anime.

Neon genesis evangelion surpasses anything literature has ever accomplished in terms of story, writing, characterization, symbolism and pretty much anything else.

Why is Neon Genesis Evangelion so much better than any book or play?

Hey, /lit/, I have a question.

Look, I know a lot of anime is bad and I'm probably going to get a lot of flak for this, but there ARE good anime shows that I think are comparable to some literary classics. Like Elfen Lied, Neon Genesis Evangelion, maybe Fullmetal Alchemist, and Cowboy Bebop.

They all have important messages about humanity, that are similar to Steinbeck's, Camus's, Kiekegard's, Hemingway, and the like. (All my favorite authors).

So, I guess my question is, why make fun of anime and not take it seriously as a literary alternative if you guys just laugh at the bad ones but never see the good ones?

I used to love reading as a kid, I pretty much lived in books. Then, like a lot of people, I just kinda stopped.

I still love fiction (tv, movies, anime etc) but my attempts to get back into reading haven't been very successful. I just can't seem to find anything interesting. I've picked books (mostly fantasy/horror/scifi) kinda blindly and have only found few that I truly enjoyed.

I was thinking that maybe if I gave a list of other media I liked, could anyone (maybe with similar tastes) give some recommendations? If anyone else wants to add their list, feel free to do so.

I need book recommendations because I'm running out of things to read.

I like things that are epic in scope with relateable characters (Ender's Game, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Watchmen, His Dark Materials), but I'd rather not be limited to that. Hell, just recommend me books where you can have an easy connection to the characters and I'll be good.

I like science fiction and fantasy, but I'm trying to branch out. Partially because I'm a fiction writer by calling (...yes, I'm a pretentious fuck), partially because I hate how people seem to think I only enjoy scifi/fantasy.

That said, don't hesitate to recommend it.

Note that I hate things with over-done description, like Lord of the Rings. (Oh God, Lord of the Rings. It didn't just have a TON of description, it also had no real IMAGERY. Rage. ... No, I did not get past the first hundred or so pages, so I can't exactly criticize the plot. Maybe it gets better.).

I need some good book recommendations.


I really have a shitty knowledge in term of fantastic books since I only read fantasy (mostly Robin Hobb) and a lot of Stephen King and Anne Rice (But I can't stand them anymore).


I'm looking for a book speaking of nightmarish illusions (like in Silent Hill or Jacob's Ladder), a true descent in hell for the protagonists (I know it's rather vague...)

A book in a modern world with a transcendent ending, transfiguring reality (like Neon Genesis Evangelion the movie or Raxephon endings, maybe even The Fountain. Some shitty references I know, I can't do better)

Lastly, a book in ancient norse time. Can be fantastic, involving norse mythology.
