Theroux is very "outsider", he has a prose style at least as accomplished as Nabokov's and Joyce's, but for some reason in relegated to obscurity, perhaps because of his extreme bitterness. Almost every reviewer of Darconville's Cat mentioned its extremely savage and biting bitterness and satire, this guy doesn't play around. You get the sense that he's not at all a nice person, he's a great writer, but you wouldn't want to meet him in real life. He'd probably find the most embarrassing thing about you then brutally satirize it out of all proportion in his works, making you a caricature of yourself and representative of a general type of person he doesn't like.

Great writer, though, I highly suggest you read his works.

The book Metropolis, by Thea von Harbou (a woman), was made into a famous movie by her husband, which Pynchon refers to in Gravity's Rainbow as a movie which, supposedly, the Elite have based their plans on (which is actually something conspiracy theorists say). The movie/book both are filled with occult themes (the book moreso) and can be, in fact, read as allegories of the modern world, and the book itself is proto-science-fiction written in 1925. It's fairly obscure, almost never talked about, and in some scenes highly resembles BNW (making it similar to Zamyatin's We, another great, not often talked about early science-fiction novel which 1984 and BNWorld were cribbed from).

Along with Control of the Mind by Jose Delgado, and The Psychology of Anomalous Experience by Graham Reed, and other interesting books, it's required reading if you're in The Temple of Set (Set being the Egyptian equivalent of Satan).

Behead All Satans is a hilarious, obscure book I recently found based on another /lit/ poster's post on best modern fiction, I'm not sure if he was being tongue-in-cheek or not but based on the Amazon preview of it alone it's pretty fucking bizarre.
