Cherry by Nico Walker, written as a fiction but based on the author's real experience.

Ha Jin's 'A Free Life' is my personal favorite of the last 25 years

Nico Walker's 'Cherry' was published this year, might be my favorite of the past 10 years or so

I read a lot of contemporary stuff because I think that saying it's mostly trash is intellectually cowardly/lazy, but I have to agree that it's mostly trash

But that is John fucking Walker. He has been writing bleeding-heart articles like that for decades now. Way to cherry-pick.

Old assignments? Here's one I did when I was 14:

Descriptive piece of a circus atmosphere.

The air reeked with insobriety. The pungent and cumbersome musk's of ale and perspiration mixed with the comparatively sweet and delicate scents of cherry and candy floss, to create a heavy and low lying, yet soft fragrance. Crimson velvet enveloped the landscape, adorned with sunburst yellow cockles dangling from each change of contour within the tent's octagonal perimeter. Indiscernible faces, upon the multitudinous rows of seats, melted into an amorphous heaving wall of fleshy hue.

The incandescent glow of the phosphorescent lights now dimmed. A single tight rope walker was precariously balanced across the stage, and glided upon those tenuous fibers of silk. The masses beckoned forward, nodding with scandalized assent at the sheer freedom of the tight rope walker, but were restrained by the shackles of consumerist mediocrity.

They longed, they yearned, but to no avail; to revel in the same liberty as he.
