I've switched over from H!P to AKB/SKE pretty much completely now.

I think that's one of the largest reasons I switched over, besides the girls being better on average due to the fierce competition (compared to H!P, where Tsunku adds Katsuta and Nakanishi to otherwise near-perfect S/mileage). Plus due to having more girls & groups you get more releases and such in AKB fandom, and the fandom (outside /jp/ I mean) isn't cancerous unlike that of H!P.

I still occasionally check H!P out though, mostly for specific, cute girls.

I think these recent AKB48 singles aren't that good. Everyday kachuusha was only barely ok, and the first time I heard it I thought I had listened it 100 times before already. The singles after it are a bit generic and boring in my opinion. I love the group, I have lots of their stuff bought and I've even been to one of their handshake events, but somehow I'm not that into them anymore. It's like all their songs sound the same to me. Of course I still follow what they do, but not like before when I had to buy all the versions of their singles and so on.
I also think that Akimoto making a fuckton of these *48 groups is getting ridiculous. In 4 years, are we going to see more people on the stage than in the audience when this *48-boom is over?

Do you know that many idols are themselves idol fans? Sure, some girls don't like it and it makes them unhappy, but no one is forcing them to continue in this line of work. They've auditioned and signed the job contract themselves, they're free to leave if they want to. Others enjoy being an idol and feel happy about their job. Some people have a personality that suits showbiz work, even if it means having to please other people - and for many pleasing the audience is an inspiration in itself, and there's nothing wrong about that.

The audience isn't all perverts and otakus either, these days AKB is mainstream with a diverse fan base from little girls to grandpas. AKB tops like Mayuyu are probably some of the richest if not the very richest Japanese girls of their own age, and they're landing major acting roles, releasing solo singles etc., which may well continue into a fantastic career after their AKB graduation. These girls are more enviable than miserable, I'd say.

If there's any harsh part about their job, it surely isn't the top girls worrying about having to "please perverts," but rather the girls at the bottom who don't get into the singles, don't get a position in the elections and so on who have to wonder if the harsh lessons and constant show performances will eventually pay off as they continue to sacrifice their education for their showbiz career. If you want to talk about misery in the idolsphere, let's talk about these girls instead.

That said I agree that the no-boyfriend rule is has its problems, but there's more to it than not having a boyfriend for the fans (which is what westerners generally think it's for). There's a part of the crowd that is like that, imagining the idol as their girlfriend and whatnot, but that's not all there is to it.

It's been a long-standing rule in the idol industry, and in a way I think it may have achieved a status where people dislike an idol for breaking the rule because of the rule itself. Japan generally cares a lot about obeying the rules and norms, so once this kind of a rule has been established, breaking the rule is in itself bad. Idols have lost popularity, been fired etc. much in the same way for other kinds of rule-breaking, such as underage smoking and drinking.

Another point is that idols are generally young. If you think the other way around, it'd be weird for the management to encourage girls who are largely underage to engage in romantic/sexual relations. Rather than just being pure sexually, it may also be about doing what's seen as appropriate at their age and keeping a clean image that way. Many (especially older) idols are forgiven for having boyfriends, at least as long as they keep relatively quiet about it until marriage. Tsuji's marriage wasn't that badly receive and her career has continued, Kago's older boyfriend and smoking were a catastrophe delivered a rather fatal blow to her work. One of these was just considered more okay. S/mileage's popularity hasn't been hurt by some of their scandals, while Kikuchi never regained her popularity and Nacchi+Yone were fired.

For the emotionless part I meant in that photo, not Mayuyu generally. It's a shame so many fake their smiles in photoshoots. And for the videos you mentioned, I understand your repulsion.

To conclude, for forcing themselves to be someone else, unnatural interactions etc. I think that may be rooted way deeper in Japanese culture - its expectations for people generally, but especially for women and girls - rather than in idol culture only. In the end what it takes to be a successful idol is linked with what it takes to be appreciated as a woman in Japan. In the end, though, I find what the idols aspire to become after their career more sad than anything about their idol career in itself. I remember one interview in which Matsui Jurina, the immensely talented front girl of SKE, said her future aspiration is to become a good housewife or such. Though being a good wife and mother is great, I find it a shame that it's the highest goal a girl that amazing can dream of achieving in Japan. You'd think she'd have some sort of education/career related aspirations.

Since you mentioned the 3rd world and the problems of women therein, I think you can also make another parallel about that. Westerners often worry and patronise about women in the Middle East being forced to cover their hair by their husbands, while the real Middle Eastern women are more concerned about things like not having the right to leave the house without a male relative or the law giving them the whip instead of justice if they get raped. Similarly, while idols not getting to have boyfriends or having to act unnatural for fans are not nice, they're symptoms of larger problems in how Japanese culture thinks about women. It's easier to see the problems in the idol industry than it is to see them in the Japanese society as a whole, but if you really care about these problems, I recommend you forget the idol industry and look at the whole country and its culture.

Am I the only person who misses Kago being on the little more.... errr.... plump side?

I've gotten used to her "frail stick" look after a few years. But every time I go back and watch videos of her the year before her firing, I go, "wow, to hell with standards of beautiful and having to be super skinny. A bit of chubbiness really worked well to made "Aibon" cute."

I don't care what Kago has done, by the way. She's still my favourite. I got into Hello!Project as a teenager and she was just the cutest thing. Her personality has a unique sort of brightness and bubbliness that resonated with me. And I really think she has a cute and charming nose.
