Yes, very much so.
It's extremely well written (and well translated, mostly literal and close to 1:1), reads more like a proper book than a VN. Great art and satisfactory amount of CGs, 10/10 soundtrack by Manyo (kara no shoujo), interweaves the heavy atmosphere/subject with great natural comedy and it doesn't drag itself with pointless filler.
Easily one of the best releases this medium has had.

it's better, but a flawed metric either way. I don't think there's any way to argue Saya is more popular than Fate, it's just that the data doesn't reflect that because at the end of the day you're only pooling people who vote.

See I disagree. For something to be a good filter it's better if it's short, that way it can be applied quickly and widely with as minimal pain as possible. Muv Luv is too long to be a good test, you don't know very soon if you're not going to like it, especially with the structure it has. A lot of people end up liking MLA that don't care for Extra.

For me a filter has to be somewhat indicative of the medium as a whole. Saya is pretty easy to get through even if you dislike lolis or whatever because the story is so dense which is different from 95% of other VNs where you have to commit a significant amount of time to finish them.

If you can live with all that and still enjoy yourself, you'll probably be able to make it in this medium. The only things Muv Luv Extra is really filtering for are patience and willingness to accept H and high school shenanigans, which I don't think is as good an indicator if someone will enjoy VNs as a whole or not.

There's a pretty big problem with both Muv Luv and Saya as filters now that I think about it. And it's the fact that a lot of your examples of things that would filter people barely exist in the Steam version of both games which is what most new VN readers will be reading. With Saya they can choose not to see those rape/loli h scenes if they want and literally don't have a choice to see them with the Steam version of Muv Luv.
