Fun fact: if you pay close attention, you may notice the girl is handcuffed to the pole. This doesn't seem like much until you read the english lyrics of the song. Japanese starts off fairly easy, gets progressively more difficult for years. Then, suddenly, it becomes easy after you reach n2 (from my experience) because you have a good enough foundation at that point to self learn.

Edit: I’ve never met a single person that reached n2 and thought it was easy

Been procrastinating for a long ass time, and just been overwhelmed at the idea of starting it, plus kept telling myself that I have too many other things to do to really have time for this. However, currently in a period with relatively large amounts of free time, and for some reason the motivational urge just struck me aswell, so think its finally time to take the plunge and start learning japanese, and I really want to stick with it.
Making this post as a time capsule to show when I started, as well as the first bastion in getting myself to continue this.

To future me: a pre-emptive fuck you, since I know exactly what's going on your mind. You'll make as many excuses as you want to try to justify yourself, but its in those moments that you really need to pull through and keep going. Remember, you started this on the 17th of March 2024, and remember how long you were thinking about even doing this. I know this motivational spring will dry up and you'll also have lots of other shit on your mind, but we both know that the worst thing you can do is half-ass this and give up in the middle of it. I'll do my part in not rushing and setting the habits as in to not burn you out, but those low points will still happen, and its up to you to push through those times. I truly believe in what we can do.

I use Wanikani Ultimate 3 and the Genki I/II decks in Anki. It definitely helps. I feel like I'm ahead in my Japanese class knowing more vocabulary and being able to properly read more kanji.
I've tried a bunch of other Kanji decks which were bad, though. It's definitely a waste of time using a deck which only tells you the "meaning", and nothing else.
In the past, I've become aware of "making it" when I dream in the foreign language I'm studying. It happened for Spanish and German, and it's starting to happen for Japanese.

the gap between conversational and fluent is huge, im probably around half way to fluency.
conversational means being able to sweet talk a girl for a few hours in a bar, talking about work, hobbies, goals in life, cultural differences, and how cute she looks without making things too awkward for you to hook up later that night. i passed that exam after about 4 years of studying.
fluent means being able to speak with no grammatical mistakes, and choosing the right vocab for the right situation in practically all cases, and making use of the right idioms and set phrases at the right times, and being able to tackle practically any topic.
