幾 is a 常用漢字 and its "official" readings are キ、いく with ほとん（ど） being considered an irregularity nowadays. being a 常用漢字 幾 does not appear on the 人名用漢字表 as that entire list is comprised of characters that are not part of that character set - they are additional kanji allowed for usage in names. if 幾 has a reading that is specifically used in names that would be refered to 名乗り i believe, though that goes for the other 人名用漢字 name-specific readings just the same.

that 外 merely pointed out that this specific reading (usage) of 幾 is an irregular and a teacher in school would probably correct it if a student were to use it. again, don't use it yourself.

no. the 外 signifies the reading as "not-included" in the 常用漢字表. 人名用漢字 and 表外漢字 are not-included on that list in their entirety - it would therefore be redundant to point it out in the same manner. a dictionary might point out a rare meaning, reading or character as まれ or 稀 (though that kanji itself is rare, so usually it's まれ) but that all depends on the specific dictionary you're using.

if you want to memorize a kanji spelling for ほとんど, then make it be 殆ど.

Hello everybody! I've been studying Japanese for about 3 years now but this is my first time visiting the Daily Japanese Thread. My Japanese name I've been going by is Ryūnosuke, so I'd appreciate it if you'd call me that. I've been getting ready to prepare for the JLPT coming this summer, and the biggest hurdle I've come across so far is making the transition on over from Rōmanji to Kana/Kanji, and so I was curious what everyone's experience with that was. I've done a lot of face to face talking practice so I'm not worried about the listening portion, but reading and writing things that don't use Rōmanji has been difficult since that's all my textbooks have stuck to. Sometimes I wish Japan would get with the times a bit and just transition to Rōmanji for good. A lot of the younger generation there seems to agree with me too. Anyway sorry for the wall of text haha, tl;dr does anyone have any advice with Kanji or even good materials written in Rōmanji?

Yeah the boiling water metaphor works because that’s how the forgetting curve works. You need to input constantly at first just to be able to see a word again before you forget it.

But once that word has matured enough in your head, you can go months or even years without seeing it and still remember what it means

Also keep in mind the note at the bottom about 95%… basically as long as you read 2 hours per day you will simply read more words during those two hours as you get better and eventually be reading enough daily to boil your water
