My Imomo 1.0 kinda pisses me off. Such an inexpensive doll thats a few QA checks from finicky acceptableness. Had to shave so much off the thigh inner that socket needed drilling just to connect again.

Now the real challenge begins in finding what other doll clothes can she actually wear.

That 1.0 body is a fucking nightmare, isn't it? I understand completely. The newer ones have improved, and their 75cm boys might be the best male powers (low bar to clear but I digress.) But that first run of their doll's bodies is really a nightmare... I have some ancient Obitsu bodies held together quite literally by tape and spite and I'd trust them for a photoshoot more.

>can you elaborate on the stain diffusing thing?
I'm no expert, I only roughly know how it works, mostly educated guesswork based on little bits of materials science knowledge gained here & there
vinyl (and I assume other polymers) are hardly impermeable solids
the vinyl basically absorbs the dye, and the unstained parts then absorb the dye from the stained parts (I assume until the concentration is equal)
that's why stains gradually disappear — the dye isn't going away, it's just getting spread out within the part
the stain cream is basically more absorbent of the dye (and based on care instructions I've read, also temporarily "loosens up" the vinyl to promote dye transfer out)
it basically sucks the dye out, which is part of why you need to replace it several times (to maintain optimally low dye concentration, but also the penetrative volatile chemical(s) evaporate)
the cream doesn't remove the vinyl skin color because that's made with larger "dye" particles that are added and "locked in" during the casting process (also why synthetic fabrics made with pre-colored polymers don't stain)

NTA but I live in a tourist hell. You never want to go somewhere tourists go during the busiest seasons because it will be a packed nightmare, the prices of everything in a seasonal economy get jacked up during the "on" season, and the locals will be exhausted by your very existence. If spring and summer are the on season, go in fall and winter, or vice versa. There's still plenty to do, I promise -- that goes for most anywhere. They also tremendously appreciate it if you make an effort to try and speak the local language, even if it's bad -- it's truly the fact that you tried that matters. Generally speaking as long as you're not embodying the stereotypes of an obnoxious holiday traveler, no one will have any problems with you at all... and given that we're all here on a Bhutanese beetle breeding website, I feel like most anons would be above-average travelers solely for understanding the value of personal space.

Godspeed anon, I rarely get salty but after the fiasco with Sakura Miku I sent Volks a strongly-worded reason you suck speech with regard to not only the drawbacks of such a system, but the complete incapability of their website to handle the load that kind of situation creates. It doesn't look like Volks changed anything with their server capacity recently. I was checking out that Anya dollfie they had last month and it was giving me high traffic notices even though the thing is made to order and there should be almost no reason to rush for it. Honestly, I fear that will be one of my bigger reasons why I won't be able to get Frieren next week. A relatively recent phenomenon (as far as vinyl goes) for which I am incredibly grateful! But as anon said, there are tan options in 2024, with companies like Imomodoll, Smart Doll, and even some resin companies who make anime-style dolls like 2D Doll offering darker skintone options at least some of the time. Easiest would probably be to grab an Imomodoll girl from Jane's Doll Land (or their taobao,) or pick up a Smart Doll (easy to access, but they can be hard to repair if anything goes wrong because parts are hard to come by and not sold directly.

My very last action figure came in the mail, and she has a cloth outfit instead of sculpted plastic. Despite the small scale it confirmed my guess that I was looking for dolls all along. Actual clothes are so much nicer. I'm still getting one or two figures later this year, but that will be all.
I still have no idea how well my resin doll will pose, but judging by the kind of articulation she has (I had to read up what mobility joints mean) she should be able to pose better than all but the best action figures I have. And jointed hands... I've been dreaming of jointed hands for so long.

One great thing about this maker is that they seem to wear anything that fits Smart Doll or SD, so I'm gonna have a field day with clothes. I'm gonna go for Victorian or something vaguely retro I think. I don't like modern fashion that much.

>One great thing about this maker is that they seem to wear anything that fits Smart Doll or SD, so I'm gonna have a field day with clothes
yeah there's a few standard doll sizes that can share clothes! SD is a common term for 60cm sizes, MSD for "chubby/big" 1/4 (40-45cm), Slim MSD for slender/adult proportioned 40-45cm a la minifee, YoSD for chubby/big 1/6 (slender 1/6 dolls are usually fashion doll territory)

One thing I'm a bit puzzled about is that many stores say things like SD11, SD13, SD16. I assume these are variations of SD measurements but looking these up gets a bit fuzzy, probably because I don't have my own doll in hand yet. I assume I should buy clothes for Smart Doll or Dollfie and account for a smaller bust size and that should be OK. Especially DDs often have gigantic knockers, I'm not sure if they're mods or just the Dynamite body.

>>45715954
They're all approximately 55-60cm but they're shaped slightly differently to reflect a different approximate age group/life stage. Most of them can share clothes barring outlying bust sizes but things will sit differently or baggier/tighter depending on the body. Here's the common SD sizes and DD along with the maskcat 57cm measurements for reference. Smartdolls basically have the same measurements as DD and I forgot to put them on here but the only difference is a slightly larger waist and smaller hip by less than a cm. Some clothes for DD will be labelled with bust sizes, S-M sized clothes are going to fit into standard sizes while L and Dynamite will usually be labelled as such, since they're exceptionally large and need clothing to be shaped around the bust to avoid unflattering draping

well, I guess it's a matter of perspective
he uses less $$$ in gear than what I've spent
on the other hand, I've mostly dumped money into lenses because of my broader interest in optics & photography subjects
he mostly uses a single all-purpose zoom (24-70 iirc) at a wide angle, which is very unusual for doll photography but it's what gives his unique style

Gotta say... You search for these resin dolls on the Western net, on Flickr, Twitter and so on, and it's like they're vandalizing them. These dolls have such beautiful sculpts and first thing they do is switch them out with grotesque bodies that don't match the head at all, or vice versa, put tacky faceups on them, dress them like skanks. Meanwhile you search for the same dolls on Weibo and you only get this immaculate stuff. What the hell, man. Even the horniest Asian DDy posters have more taste than Western resin owners. I swear if I only had to go by the pics I'd found from Western users I'd have never bought these dolls.

I am in the process of 3D printing my own doll. I finally have all of the pieces printed and sanded. It's been a lot of work, but it's very rewarding.

I am using a Prusa Mini FMD printer with a Revo Micro nozzle system, so I can easily swap between 0.25/0.4.0.6/0.8mm nozzles, which was very useful for this model. I was able to use the larger nozzles to cut down print time on the larger parts, but keep the fine details on the smaller parts like the hands with a 0.25mm nozzle. However, for simplicity, sticking to a 0.4mm would be fine, it would just take longer to print everything, I used less than one full roll of flesh-toned PLA. I had maybe ~80 hours of print time, including some failures. I sanded all parts with 250/800/1000 grit sandpaper and it turned out relatively smooth. There are still lots of blemishes and artifacts from printing, but for me, that's part of the charm. Materials for the body itself was approximately $30, including the filament and material to string it.

I have no experience with resin printing, but your end results would likely be much better than mine, though more expensive.

The next step for me is the faceup, which I believe is going to be the most challenging part of this process. If you don't care to learn how to do it, I know you can pay people on Etsy to do it for you. But I bought some pastels and watercolor pencils for ~$15 and we'll see how it goes.

If you're whole goal is to save money, understand that this hobby is still a damn money pit. I still need to buy eyes, a wig (and wig cap), and clothes, which aren't cheap. Honestly, I wouldn't recommend doing this project if your underlying goal is just to get a cheap doll, because it's still not that cheap. If your goal is to have a doll that is truly handmade, that you poured your own time, sweat, and care into, then yes, it's worth it. Good luck!

>I have seen bisque dolls that look absolutely incredible but know nothing about the process.
You would make your original sculpt out of another material, like scupley. from that you would make a plaster mold, and you can then cast porcelain into is as a slurry(the plaster wicks the water away, so it solidifies relatively quickly) and pour off the excess. After removing from the mold it's just final touch ups before firing in a kiln.
Real challenges are going to be space and equipment. Plaster molds take up a lot of space, as does a kiln, and kilns aren't exactly cheap, and neither is porcelain. You could probably learn a lot by taking a local pottery class.

That looks awesome man! You thinking of names for her already? And thanks for all the info.
If I follow through, I think I'll go with a traditional printer, my house doesn't have the best ventilation and I don't have a room without both people and pets, I'm too concerned over our wellbeing. Well the cost doesn't help either.

I am also currently brushing up on my sewing skills to make outfits for the dolls I already own, I have a lot of fashion dolls around and they all have varied body types, finding and altering clothes for each seems like the greater hassle, and I used to make them as a kid before I got busy with life stuff.
I was thinking that I could try to make an android of some kind, would certainly make a face up simpler. I'll also be getting a sewing machine soon, so as long as I can find hair I can make wigs without much difficulty.

While at first I thought of saving costs, the idea of making a doll from scratch became very appealing, especially with all the OCs I have rolling around in my mind and stuffed in my sketchbook. I've also found some good deals on dolls recently after expanding my price range, who knows what the future holds, depending on how good of a job I find this year I might be able to have my cake and eat it.

Wood is beautiful, I have always wondered what those art reference dummies would look like with proper carving, but it's very hard to do. I have only seen one wooden doll of a panda, and it was very small and simple, not to mention downright ancient.

You can 3d print wood though, or at least a mixture of wood and polymer, which is a lot more achievable. It supposedly feels, smells and looks like the real deal.

For bisque slip casting is probably the best option yeah. Making the molds yourself will be a pain in the ass, but once you have them if they are well designed you can try making multiple fairly easily reusing the molds. You have to be knowledgeable in several topics including 3d modeling or hand sculpting for the doll, mold design, and slip casting process in terms of material, preparation, mold removal and cleanup then firing. After that, you've still got to fire glaze onto it I assume. It seems quite involved but possible for a 1 man army, not to mention expensive as hell to start.

This is a bit long winded but seems relevant. I'm sure there are more videos out there

I would agree then. Economies of scale for something like bisque dolls get into business territory for it to make sense. Especially when you get into much more costly processes like pressure casting. Tolerances for cast and fired pieces are also terrible which would require a lot of trial and error to get joints to fit right.

Aluminum was my first choice, until i saw Nilered's video about purple gold. Aluminum casting requires specialized equipment to prevent hydrogen from dissolving in it and causing a whole bunch of pockets of air to be included in the cast. Even when he bubbled argon through the mixture before casting it still had some pockets. A secondary reason is that I think bronze will just look better in the long run.

I have yet to buy a doll, so I must ask, why does it matter so much? With BJDs especially there's a lot of weird rules for what qualifies as a BJD and half of them aren't consistent. Like they have to be a specific material, have specific head configurations, non-rooted hair, and be strung and handmade(?), but also MJDs count sometimes?

I assumed a BJD was simply a doll that's strung and sometimes has non-rooted hair, everything else seems like they're relics from when the hobby was a lot less accessible.

I'm the resin guy: mostly because most vinyl dolls are obviously anime-like while resin dolls tend to have a completely different style, generally realistic. It's like barging in a manga art thread to post Alphonse Mucha.

To be more specific: there used to be two generals, one which was a resin BJD thread on /toy/ (although I'm too new to have been in it personally), and the other was this general, which is more focused on anime-style dolls like DDs and MDDs. So while this is all BJD stuff, my posting resin here is only due to the resin thread being dead. It's not a matter of elitism or what is a BJD about (that's actually more of a concern with resin communities who ban vinyl dolls because they have an internal frame instead of strings) as much as the style focus of the thread. At least I think so.

I assume it died because the people at /toy/ don't behave as I heard around? Shame. I don't think you're elitist, but I have been curious about the weird rules in other BJD communities and thought it was a good opportunity to ask, places like DOA are especially autistic for no discernable reason.
So vynil is what most anime dolls use, while resin is what more traditional BJDs use. Most vynil dolls have joints and/or inner frame, but can also be strung. Got it.

This reminds me of something funny I realized the other day, Estrela's Falcon is somehow a chimera of several doll styles, having both mechanical joints and being strung with an internal rubber frame.

>I assume it died because the people at /toy/ don't behave as I heard around?
Resin communities tend to VERY touchy about the subject of recasts, and the /toy/ general was no exception, so it was trolled to hell on a regular basis. They were also just kind of generally dicks about what did/didn't count as a BJD.

>> No.45735343

>>45735255
Resin people tend to be really anal, if you've seen DOA you have an idea. The only thing I agree about with that site is the recast issue, but that's its own subject. As for /toy/, it's a complete mess right now due to bots/spammers and the general atmosphere is really horrible.
Personally I like vinyl dolls very much and I think especially the MDDs are really cute, I love the ones that get posted here, but considering how close they are to a resin doll of the same size in terms of price, I'll probably be a resinfag forever. Resin dolls just make my heart flutter. If MDDs were around $250 (never gonna happen) I'd consider buying.

Damn they managed to be even more autistic over classification than the forums I've seen so far? I didn't think that was possible.
I find it odd, recasts are an inevitability when the product can't be found anywhere else and creators explicitly refuse to compete with the pirates by employing automated production. Or by providing any sort of alternative really.
There's a demand, but no supply, of course someone else is gonna make it if they don't.

They certainly aren't morally clean, but do they really think bullying people into paying 400 for a doll is a productive way to grow a community? God bless all the smaller scale and newer companies I've been seeing cutting prices back, I myself struggle to justify how pricy some dolls can get.

>>45735343
I've seen some of the threads there, they seem to be either dead or infested with their own troublemakers, it's disappointing to see one of the few places I know for toy discussion be in that state.
I am currently on the fence on what my first doll will be, I'm waiting on some Blind Boxes BJDs to test the waters and see if I go further or I stick with mechanical joints like I always have. Both seem on the same level to maintain, but I have a lot more experience with the joints used in stuff like Tinyfox's. So far these 3 caught my eye the most, they're so precious.

From my limited experience with action figures, that kind of open-mouthed expression is not going to be very versatile. You can't face-swap, so she's gonna be stuck with that cheerful expression. I'd go for the more neutral smile, but that's because I like different situations and different moods. I think left is the cutest though, I just like bobbed black hair too much. Do you have a full pic of that one?

>> No.45735762

>creators explicitly refuse to compete with the pirates by employing automated production.
Not really practical for certain small scale productions. Most BJD companies don't make so many dolls that investing in automation is going to help them break even for a long time. Volks, sure, maybe some of the other larger companies, but a lot aren't really in a position to make the move. This is why msot dolls are made to order, rather than sold from stock.
Companies that aren't at a point to automate are never going to be able to offer a lower price than recasters, since the recaster only pay a pittance for the sculpt(the cost of the doll) compared to the cost to make an original. Small companies really don't have any recourse when some chinese dickhead eats into their already slim margins except to eat shit and shut down.
>They certainly aren't morally clean,
Generally where the trolling starts is with people claiming there's no ethical issues with recasts and it just snowballs from there. SUPER easy bait, they go for it every time.

She's called Macoco Ba, I also tend to shy away from dolls with open mouths but she really caught my attention, only thing holding her back to me is that she's about twice as much as the other 2 (1/4 vs 1/6) and I am not entirely sure I wanna make that leap just yet.
As for Cherrie, she was one of the very first anime style dolls I've ever seen, I quite like the idea of a maid vampire/demon and I love me some red hair. She is partially the reason I even sought out places like this. I dunno if I can maintain that hair style though.

I think Ashley might be my favorite of the three though, her smug expression, blonde hair and Christian motiff are one hell of a combo. She reminds me a lot of Abigail from FGO, and she's my favorite servant alongside Saber.

My bad, should have elaborated that I meant BJDs and friends are not only pretty niche, but they also often go to places that other companies don't. When was the last time you saw a ripped female doll? The only one I know is a BJD that's currently being recast to hell.
Not really a justification, considering that if anything rarity justifies a high cost, but it does make me understand people who cave in a bit more. I myself abandoned many hobbies because of cost, though with the dolls I've seen so far, the price has been pretty reasonable taking into account how much the average (stable) first worlder makes in a month and the production costs.

On a more positive note, I just found out there's a big Ashley too and that's quite the stare.

>> No.45736964

My personal take is this: you're pretty much paying for art. I know that the #1 reason why artists quit their craft is lack of revenue, and I know first-hand that it's impossible to have a day job along with your craft "to make ends meet", you will slowly quit, and you definitely cannot keep up a professional kind of output (at the level of skill required). That's just a fantasy that people have when they haven't made a thing in their whole lives. They just want people to work on art for free because art doesn't have inherent value.
If I think an artist is unreasonable in whichever way, I simply do not buy from that artist, rather than buying counterfeits of his work. Say I looked at the Smart Doll site and I was welcomed with that weird pretentious rant from the maker, I knew I had no interest in those dolls. I would never buy a counterfeit Smart Doll even if it were significantly cheaper, because to me it would be like stealing. On the other hand I found a maker that makes things I love, and he's got recasters (obviously, because as I said it's inevitable), so I definitely want my money to go to that maker and I don't want to be responsible in him shutting down his business. It really boils down to how much you care about the artwork vs. simply wanting the product. My money isn't infinite, so when I find someone who's making artwork I find worthy of it I definitely want it to go to that person instead of parasites, because even if they were to give me the same doll for 1/3 of the price I'd be giving money to parasites who's bleeding out the actual person who's making the artwork.

>> No.45737560

>>45737534
Gotta be honest, these vinyl doll frames always make me uneasy because all I see is a crapton of mechanical points of failure. I'm sure these are built to resist the stress on the better dolls, but I can't help it. The idea of a strung doll makes me feel much more relaxed. I have never seen a vinyl doll dismantled, but how do the vinyl pieces cling onto the frame? Friction? Are they just free floating?

>> No.45737602

>>45737560
They're just free floating for the most part, with narrowed points at various ends to hold them in place. They generally come off easily, with thighs probably being the hardest part to separate shell from frame. I've disassembled many of them over the years, either for maintenance, curiosity, or DIY frankensteining endeavors, and between the two I personally prefer the ease of a plastic frame over the harrowing experience of stringing something back together again. But I also have a bum wrist, so others might not be nearly so bothered by it. As for the stressors... vinyl frames are pretty sturdy! They will break if you put enough force on them, but no amount of normal use will approach that. The parts may wear down with time- Obitsu shoulders are known to develop stress fractures over the years- but the parts are easy to find and replace for the most part, so this is less of a concern. Smart Dolls are the exception here, because Danny refuses to simply fucking sell the parts he makes.

Perhaps, I've just never owned a doll that big or paid that much on a single product before, even my transformers are way smaller on average. It makes me a bit nervous, though I am also a bit excited. There have been very few things I've been this excited about in recent years, one more thing to look forward to.

Speaking of which, I'd like to confirm something if it's not a bother. I've been going through this thread's guides amongst a few others, a full set like the ones I've been posting are at their cheapest roughly 160-300~ USD for 1/4th and 1/6th scale dolls right? Second only to certain Azone dolls that can start at around 50. I feel like I've done a thorough search of the content provided, but after going through so many ads they start blending together and my list becomes a big mess.

Same, anon, I was getting 80 bucks figmas before I caved in and blew... well ten times as much on a 1/3 but I knew it was what I wanted all along. I shortly considered buying something middle-ground like an Azone doll as a step between, but I knew that would've meant settling for something I didn't really want (much like I felt about action figures).
I wanted actual clothes, customization, good posing, enough resilience and QC not to randomly break because the factory makes it for display rather than being handled and they went off by a fraction of a millimeter, and something that was really mine. BJDs checked all the boxes. Plus I'm only gonna have to suffer customs fees once. Sometimes I think about the size and it's a bit intimidating but I feel the more you get close to life-size, the more of an actual presence you'll get instead of a toy. Yeah, his new frame has as many gaps and so on as possible. Even the tiniest cuts will save on materials cost over time, but I can tell you, first hand, that the new Evolve frames are absolutely less structurally sound than the old ones. The machining tolerances for the parts are also tighter than a priest's asshole, and he's made them harder to disassemble even for people used to taking apart dolls like me. Working on them is a fucking chore if I'm being honest, never mind the struggle to even get replacement parts in the first place.

Who the fuck is going to say that when 3/4 of your dolls are black? Having a regular lineup of black and tan girls helps his appeal, add to that the other "woke" dolls like skin conditions, burn scars, plus size bodys and apparently soon muscle girls. There's also a fairly wide variety of head sculpts, the semi-real style in particular is not something you see very often in 1/3 size BJDs.
Danny also has a bigger online presence in the west, for better or worse, than Volks so as others said Smart Dolls are often babys first BJD.
He releases sewing patterns and stl files for discontinued apparel items for free on his site, so if you want to get into sewing for your dolls there's a lot more english material and beginner friendly guides available.
Somewhat subjective but Smart Dolls have a far more appealing looking sculpt in the hips/thighs/butt region as well as more natural looking big boobs options which might be of interest if you want to get a doll for photography.

The "woke" angle from this guy is a relatively new marketing tactic and people originally bought in because he was showing robotics prototypes. Also, until very recently, if you wanted any other vinyl color than SWS/NS, it was SmD or the highway. Others bought into them just because variety is nice, or they wanted one of the SmD character dolls -- for a while Danny was also the only one making male dolls at all, period. Obitsu discontinuing their 60cm body around this time also made options limited for vinyl owners, and when he was still producing "milk" bodies on the regular, SmD/DD hybrids were an uncommon but valuable option for some. Before the DDf3 frame came out, the posing issues in SmD, while annoying, weren't quite as pronounced in comparison, especially to those with older DD2 bodies to compare them to. And back in the day, Danny was courting other markets -- weebs, robotics nerds, fashion designers, local brands in japan looking to make mascot characters... dude has run the gauntlet of angles to make his schtick successful. It's just the unfortunate reality that the people most likely to buy your overpriced fashion dolls are invariably Karens and their sprog. Annoying as he is, I get why this is the route he went down.

But there is a reason why SmD caught on and were popular for so long, and why some people still get them today. It's still like pulling teeth to get a tan doll out of Volks, let alone anything else. Variety is the spice of life, and historically SmD has held its value to an absurd extent on the second-hand market as well. Your "gotcha" against the thing you don't like doesn't work when it ignores historical contexts for why something became popular in the first place, anon.

>>45752695
UV resin has been around for a dog's year, and I have heard it does yellow slower, but... yellowing is an inevitability in all resin that is exposed to the air. The sun will make it yellow faster, but oxidation from the air is the culprit here, and it's just something people have to accept. I have some pretty old resin, and it's mostly mellowed to a creamy white color instead of the paper white it was originally. Even porcelain will soften in color over time... oxidation is inevitable. It is up to the individual how much that will bother them. Back in the day, there were problems with some batches of resin going weird quickly and dramatically, but these days companies and customers usually know what to expect.

>> No.45753876

>>45752695
I believe that just refers to UV-coated resin, or resin that is made with uv-resistant additives such as aliphatic polyurethane or zinc nano particles.

Adding too much of any additive will cause the resin to either not have the correct color, or not cure entirely, so no resin is 100% UV resistant but the rate of degradation/discoloration can be significantly slowed down.

Yes, as long as it's very clean or new. I wouldn't trust a brush I've used for painting on a face-up, inner bristles can still have pigment. A clean kneaded eraser could work too, just tapping it on the dirt to see if it picks it up. Lots of options, I just threw out what I would do first.

Hobby shit in Japan is just more prevalent in general, but you can find doll props in Daiso and everything out there. There are entire cafes that cater to doll owners and so on. There's just more volume of doll stuff in general there, so monster dolls also become more common as well.. it's likely as well that the mangaka is referencing particularly well-known dolls as a sort of in-joke for people familiar with them already. If we don't get a reference to that one Miku, I'll be surprised.

I think I understand what people mean when they say that vinyl poses better than resin (this is a common opinion although I have heard the opposite ITT). It's because they HOLD a pose better, right? I always asked "which poses better on average, resin or vinyl?" but what I really wanted to know was what kind of range can you squeeze out of either.
Also can you suede joints without taking the doll apart? If not, I plan on doing that the first time I restring.

>> No.45757234

>>45756970
Honestly it depends on the specific doll, an Obitsu body will pose better than your average resin bodies but not as well as a Bimong body or one of those skinny fashion dolls (like Popovy and Pasha Pasha). Vinyl dolls have frames, which are more stable on their own and means they hold poses better, but that's only one part of a doll's posing abilities
>Also can you suede joints without taking the doll apart?
Yes, if you're not using silicone kips. You can try hot glue; it's cheap, easy and requires no disassembly

>> No.45757313

>>45757234
Plus with hot glue, if you mess up, just let it cool. It'll come right back off again.

>>45756970
In my admittedly imperfect experience, particularly well-engineered resin will be able to get into poses even an Angel Philia can't manage, but the frames of a vinyl doll make posing them easier and more reliable than most resin dolls. Resin poses under tension, which can be trickier to work with than vinyl, which poses under friction. In all cases, there are absolutely some vinyl dolls that pose worse than some resin dolls, and vice-versa -- it comes down to which ones you're comparing at the end of the day. In all cases, personal preference is what matters most of all.

If you've already made your money, retiring here is great. No one wants to live here so cost of living is very affordable compared to nearly anywhere else. If you aren't wealthy and retiring, or able to work from home over long distance, perhaps don't. Especially where I am, the job market is limited to the mines and retail. Either one will result in death sooner or later.

I wanted to do it with that self-adhesive moleskin pads they sell for shoes. Hot glue sounds messy and if the gun is too hot it can damage the resin. I'll see if the doll needs it beforehand (I pray that it won't be floppy or kicky right off the bat) and then decide. I certainly don't wanna restring or take things apart right away. My main worry is that the doll will come shattered because of rough handling during transport. I have read about a few cases where it happened.
>>45757313
>If you've already made your money, retiring here is great.
Ehhhh I wish I could even think about retiring somewhere nice.
>it comes down to which ones you're comparing at the end of the day
That's for sure, I was just asking on general lines. The body I'm getting is supposedly a great poser according to people who own other resins, and the only flaw I see in it is the lack of an ab joint. There's only one joint in the torso at chest height. On the other hand every time I found a doll that had that extra joint, I happened to dislike the sculpt. I know how much that joint helps with twists and bends of the spine so it's a bit of a pain to give it up. And most vinyl dolls from what I've seen tend to have a fully flexible spine in the armature, which is great.
>Resin poses under tension, which can be trickier to work with than vinyl, which poses under friction
A small part of why I went with resin is that I've grown to strongly dislike friction-based mechanisms. They just love to fail or wear out really fast unless they're made very precisely and in really good materials, even more so when they're employed in something complex like a doll's articulation. There's something elegant in the way a strung doll works, it's so simple. I always had a feeling since I read up about traditional BJDs that I would've enjoyed that kind of system more.
Plus I'm curious about what people mean when they say that a resin doll feels more organic in posing. I understand the side of vinyl feeling stiffer because I assume it's the same as a large action figure (more or less), but I have no idea how it's gonna feel with resin, especially considering the weight.
I think the best posing I've seen so far was from a Popovy Sisters doll. There's a video demonstrating the posing and that thing poses like a dream. If only it didn't look like a Popovy doll...

The art was great. Consider I'm incredibly picky and easily turned off. I actually read it until the end which happens rarely. I think it would've been more interesting if it took the time to flesh out the relationships between characters, because outside of Sartain and her enamorment with a jerk, you're pretty much told "X loves Y" with nearly no buildup, which isn't enough to make you feel for anyone given the disastrous consequences if a doll gets rejected.

You can stick action figures - made of PVC - in the freezer for about an hour to fix stretched plastic and loose joints. After that long the plastic will start to turn brittle and crack. It's probably worse for soft vinyl... I'd pose it quickly inside and then take it outside for the photo before taking it right back in. And wait till it's not so cold before moving it again?
