i'm learning in order to fully enjoy touhou media. touhou is in it's core a video game series (20+ games now) by zun
zun is an absolute genius, he is a game maker, programmer, composer, artist and writer and excels in all these things making touhou an absolute unique work which surpasses world art and literature in it's artistic merit
of course besides the games there is official literature, manga, fan books which expand the games and their stories
and with how amazing touhou is there has been a lot of derivative works, doujinshi for example using the characters, or music that does cool stuff with zun's music as the base for it for example the song in the video is called 『浅き夢見し、酔ひもせず』which is the derivative work and the zun composing it's based on is 砕月 which is this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gGJHIU_GrDA
also i should add you should never never NEVER NEVER talk to EOPs or let yourself be told anything about 東方 by EOPs because they literally do not understand it, i don't even mean just the language and story aspect of it (which they have no chance of understanding anyway as their translations are fucked up and written by reddit furries who are sub n3 levels, yes i've talked to the people responsible for the majority of touhou translations personally and talked shit to them and called them retards until they removed me from their chat and banned me from the touhou wiki) but even more on a philosophical level, the western touhou fan base is essentially it's own cringe circle jerk which doesn't understand the value of zun's work but is merely a community for them to find homosexual autists like themselves in, i repeat, do not engage with any EOP regarding touhou you will get the wrong impression and it might leave a bitter taste on your enjoyment of touhou forever

I guess based on what I read, these guys “living in death” could be seen as zombies and therefore existing against nature, so that might be where some of the confusion lies, but I’m just speculating. Oh yeah I forgot my other huge mistake the slowed me down a lot.

I should've read/watched/played stuff that I already like and knew was good. So for example if you like death note and you watched it in english then re-watch the whole thing in Japanese, or read the manga version. If you watched NHK in japanese then maybe try reading the novel of it, if you liked s;g anime maybe try the visual novel version of it. etc

That extra context will help you understand, which makes it more comprehensible and also more enjoyable.
Plus the enjoyment you already get out of consuming something you love in its original language
