actionable advice means information that can be factored into one's decisions in a determined way. your current advice is:
>1. take some retard test
>2. ???
>3. PROFIT
I'm asking you to either admit that what you've been saying is completely useless as advice or to fill the gap and demonstrate how one can go from taking some particular retard test to factoring that into a concrete decision regarding learning japanese.
unless you want to backpedal your backpedal and go back to your 1 minute mental multiplication test being useful to determine whether one can reasonably learn japanese. except then I'm going to go back to asking you for empirical evidence that supports this concrete conclusion (and not just for a vague link between mental math and language ability, which isn't enough to support it).
>"actionable advice" is just an arbitrary conclusion you want someone else to draw for you from data
no, the whole point is that it's not arbitrary but informed by something determinate that hopefully constitutes valid knowledge in the domain the advice applies to. here's an example of actionable advice:
>If you have a fever over 104°F (40°C), you should call your doctor.
https://www.health.harvard.edu/diseases-and-conditions/treating-fever-in-adults
if you still don't understand the concept of actionable advice by now, then you might genuinely have retard level verbal iq

there are probably no studies proving the claim you are strawmanning mine to be, yes. my claim is:

working memory is one of the easiest to measure aspects of intelligence, and mental arithmetic is an excellent test for WM. doing poorly on one type of WM test doesn't necessarily mean your WM is poor, but there's a decent chance it is. if you do poorly on multiple WM tests, then it's definitely poor. dogshit WM has a significant negative impact on language learning ability and even on the ability to comprehend long and complex sentences in your native language.

every claim in the previous paragraph is a widely accepted and established fact in psychometrics. if you still bitch about it you are unironically too stupid to even bother replying to.

i don't know why you're so mad at me for suggesting that people with horrible WM should know learning japanese will be much harder for them and they will probably not reach a high level. intelligence tests are literally built to accurately measure differences in natural ability and are useful because of their validity and predictive power. educate yourself: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G_factor_(psychometrics)#Practical_validity

most of the general public is very ignorant about how dramatic the differences can be. they can't even imagine the ways they manifest in our lives even in unconscious shit like how your brain organize shapes and makes spatial sense of your surrounding when your eyes are open.

no, it is not. you still weren't able to tell me, for example, what result on what test means that it'd take one about 2x the average effort to learn japanese. or something simpler like learn a given amount of vocabulary. so it is unsatisfactory with regards to the goal of informing a decision about putting effort into learning the language.
nothing in your post has this or any other similarly concrete information. it just says that the information may exist somewhere out there.
give me a WM test along with a study that links its results to quantified outcomes in secondary language acquisition. something like: "if you get 30 points on the test, you'll vocabulary acquisition will be about 2x slower than for the average person, meaning very roughly X words per hour of study". until you can provide something like this, you aren't saying anything practically relevant.
but you know you can't provide that, which is why you continually deflect by addressing a strawman instead: I never said there's no positive correlation between WM and secondary language acquisition, or that this correlation couldn't be exploited for getting information practically useful to learners. yet those are the only things your post addresses.
my actual claim, that you still haven't addressed, is instead that you haven't provided a single empirically-validated, concrete way of using that correlation to help inform one's decision regarding learning a secondary language. you gave no validated criteria for interpreting results of some test besides "if you get a score on the test, then you'll probably have an easier time learning a language than if your score was lower, and a harder time than if your score was higher". which is in itself useless, because there's no fixed point of reference here, yet that's what's necessary to get actionable information out this.

its a pain in the ass to look up shit, characters are often too blurry to make out, especially if you're not familiar with them, not to mention the slang
thinking you should read a vinnie or a linnie instead, in my experience those were easier, and im only starting to really enjoy manga now (not much left to learn from it though, i just like manga)
as for the mental load, it gets a lot better if you stay consistent, you develop a tolerance (which you lose if you stop)
when does it get easier?
around 750 hours read, or 8k words mined, in my case at least, thats when i noticed i knew "most" things
before that it always felt like a slog, doesn't matter if you need to look up 5, 4 or 3 words per sentence, it's still like stop and go traffic
when you know %95 of the words in a work, you'll still miss every 20th word statistically, which is the length of a sentence

it is, but learning a language takes a long time
if it makes it any better then you develop a "work specific" vocabulary fairly quickly, authors tend to stick to a limited set of words.
750 hours is probably more accurate for feeling better about reading regardless of work

>>43874432
works out to two hours a day for a year, so not unrealistic
personally cycling works helped, i'd read something challenging for as long as i could and then switched to anime or something easier while my brain cools off
also worked for anki once i reached 500 reps a day after doing 60 new words a day for 3 months straight, because believe it or not that had it's own mental load too

>>give me heuristics
>lol.
lol what? if you can't give people heuristics justified by research, then you can't give them valid and useful advice.
>effort isn't directly measurable idiot
it doesn't have to be directly measurable, it can be approximated using amounts of time dedicated to comparable learning tasks.
>speed of language processing has been studied and that's a good proxy for what you might be looking for
"speed of language processing" is too abstract to directly constitute useful information. you'd need to provide a justified procedure for translating it into something like the approximate amount of hours of doing a given kind of task to reach a given learning result. otherwise it's not going to be practically helpful to people.
>>or something simpler like learn a given amount of vocabulary
>yes, i exactly did lol.
so what result on what test means that it'd take one about 2x the average amount of time to learn a fixed amount of japanese vocabulary using the same method?
>yes it does, i literally gave you the names of the meta-analyses
no, you didn't quote anything that answers the question. what you quoted only answers two other claims that I haven't made (I already said what they were in the previous post).
>the studies tell you precisely how they constructed the WM measure, and they tell you what you can expect in terms of language comprehension given values for the measure
what does "what you can expect" mean though? because I already know we can expect higher WM to correlate with easier language comprehension, but that's not what we're discussing here.
if any of those studies says something directly applicable in practice to a decision on learning a language, then give me the study title and the page.
>or you could lookup literally any study instead of being a lazy, annoying faggot.
I did and I don't see anything resembling the thing we're talking about. if you weren't lazy and annoying yourself, you'd just name the study and give me the page number that provides a test and a procedure for translating its result into actionable information regarding the decision to learn a language.
>do you even know what a meta-analysis is? every study in each meta-analysis is listed there. you could directly search for each original study and dataset if you wanted.
if the meta-analysis itself doesn't provide what I'm asking for, then why even post it? just post the study that does. are you playing for time?
>you don't want to search anything
I'm not the one who made the claim, so I'm not the one responsible for looking for evidence for it.
also I strongly suspect it doesn't even exist in the first place, judging from how hard it's to get a single piece of evidence out of you.
>when i spoonfeed you expert summaries of HUNDREDS of studies, you don't even read them
I already told you that what you posted only addresses a strawman. I'll read the studies if you prove that they give a procedure for obtaining actionable information. I'm not interested in studies merely proving correlation, because, as I said, I already accept that the correlation exists.
>>43874325
lol you just keep addressing the strawman. you keep jerking off to how you've shown that there's a correlation. except nobody said there was no correlation! instead, I'm asking for a procedure for exploiting that correlation to extract concrete information. and this is the thing you're still desperately avoiding to provide, because you know you can't.

that's described in explicit detail in every paper on the subject retard, lol. they tell you what WM tests they administered and how the scores translate to performance on language tasks. the WM tests used are standard across literature too so you have no excuse, but i can't help you if you're too mentally stunted to read the statistical analysis and make sense of it. if you want a bite-sized "guide" for dimwits like yourself that bad, by all means hire a psychometrist or statistician to make one. i'm not willing to do your retarded project for you though.

more importantly, who cares? it doesn't change the big picture: your ability to multiply two 3 digit numbers in your head, the thing that triggered you so hard that you've been butthurt over it for 24 hours now, matters *significantly* when it comes to language learning. the precise numerical prediction rules could be systematically extracted from meta-analyses if you cared (or if someone did the dirty work for learners), but that's simply a calibration issue.

what a retarded and pointless thing to fuss about. do you want a gmi/ngmi calculator that gives you a judgement at the end of a series of tests with flashing digits and shapes? lmao. it could sell well if someone made one, i suppose.

>that's described in explicit detail in every paper on the subject retard
name a single one and give page no.
>and how the scores translate to performance on language tasks
do they also provide a valid procedure for translating performance on isolated tasks into actionable information regarding real learning? because "if you get X points on the test, then you'll likely score about 14.6 out of 25 points on a made up task XYZ-45-B6" is indeed a translation to "performance on language tasks", but it still isn't a translation to actionable information in the vein of "if you get X points on the test, then you'll likely take 2000 hours to learn 1000 japanese words from scratch, so you might as well just give up". I'm asking specifically for the latter.
>but i can't help you if you're too mentally stunted to read the statistical analysis and make sense of it
note here that you've pretended to give advice to people who might be too retarded to learn japanese. and yet you're saying that to really make use of the advice, they'd need to read studies and draw their own valid conclusions from statistical analyses.
this is utterly ridiculous and another proof that what you're saying is practically useless. because if someone's capable of making all this research by themselves and synthesizing it into something actionable, then it seems extremely unlikely they're so unfit for secondary language acquisition that they'd need to worry about any of this in the first place.
>if you want a bite-sized "guide" for dimwits like yourself that bad
that's literally what you claimed you were providing: advice for people who are too retarded to learn japanese that will help them not waste time on a fruitless endeavour. but what you're actually asking from them is to waste time on analyzing research that they're too also too stupid to grasp. you aren't making any sense.
>your ability to multiply two 3 digit numbers in your head, the thing that triggered you so hard that you've been butthurt over it for 24 hours now, matters *significantly* when it comes to language learning
what the fuck is "matters significantly"? how much is "significantly" in terms of changing the amount of relative effort required to learn japanese? until you can specify that, what you're saying can't be applied in practice and won't help anyone with anything (other than helping you deflect from the actual point).
>the precise numerical prediction rules could be systematically extracted from meta-analyses if you cared
I don't: you're the one who is supposedly providing advice here, so you must've already extracted that information. otherwise you wouldn't have been able to provide any concrete and valid advice. oh wait, you haven't. so what are you waiting for? do you expect people who are too retarded to learn japanese to be able to "systematically extract precise numerical prediction rules from meta-analyses"? you're a joke.
>do you want a gmi/ngmi calculator that gives you a judgement at the end of a series of tests with flashing digits and shapes?
bro that's literally what you claimed in the beginning. that you have a 1-minute ngmi detector based on mental math. but then you backpedalled and from that point onward you haven't attempted to give any other actionable information. and that's because it's been called out that you just made that shit up and can't back it with research, other than gesturing at stuff that doesn't prove it.
>lmao. it could sell well if someone made one, i suppose.
yeah, because it'd actually provide actionable feedback. as opposed to all the worthless shit you've written since ur backpedal 24 hours ago that no-one will ever find useful.

why don't you actually read the studies instead of making up bullshit strawmen lol. most studies look at WM tests that could be replicated on a computer at home and show your performance gives reproducible information on all kinds of language abilities. we already have studies that look at the link between WM and L2 vocabulary and grammar learning. you brought up vocabulary learning yourself as an example of actionable, concrete information, so we can end this right here on counts of you either being a disingenuous backpedaler or a blithering idiot who doesn't remember what he said an hour ago.

>and yet you're saying that to really make use of the advice, they'd need to
*someone would need to. quite the reading comprehension you have lol. it doesn't surprise me you're triggered, your verbal memory must be garbage. and apparently even basic reasoning is too much for you, your argument is that my not being willing to do your weekend project for you somehow changes the fact that someone else could if they cared. what a retard. i bet it's why you won't read the studies either, you know you're too dumb to understand what they are saying lmao.

>bro that's literally what you claimed in the beginning. that you have a 1-minute ngmi detector based on mental math
and yeah, the test only takes a minute and gives you a key number that determines your learning rate to quite an extent. most people would just google their scores and guesstimate what it means, and they wouldn't be far off. autistic tools like you don't get that WM effects aren't quiet or subtle, they are dramatic and conspicuous. if you can remember 9 digits flashed one by one on a screen and recite them in reverse order, your WM is "good". if you can only manage 5, your WM is very poor and you will struggle a lot with learning a new language. you could just look at your L1 by racing on comprehension questions against your friends or people online who can score 9 and see how much slower you are, then extrapolate.
>b-but the procedural validation!
it's validated that WM effects are strong, stable and pronounced. IQ effects in general are extremely stable and easy to extrapolate off of. If you score at the 90th percentile in IQ, you most likely scored very close to the same percentile on your GCSE mathematics exam (there are studies on this), or your GRE, or whatever. You don't need midwit analysis to get ballpark estimates on how much slower you will be at learning japanese after controlling for interest and available time.

>why don't you actually read the studies

>someone would need to
yeah, so come back when someone does. until then there's nothing here that those people could use. because no retarded person is gonna hire a professional researcher for a weekend because some autistic mongoloid has suggested that on 4chan in order to get out of a lost argument.
>your argument is that my not being willing to do your weekend project for you somehow changes the fact that someone else could if they cared
no, I'm saying that you've pretended to give useful advice, but now you're saying that the advice actually doesn't exist because someone qualified must first go spend time producing it. and we're supposed to trust you that it can be done despite the fact that you haven't demonstrated it being done, for example by pointing to an example test along with a concrete procedure for translating the results of that test into concrete information that could inform a decision to study or not study a secondary language.
>i bet it's why you won't read the studies either, you know you're too dumb to understand what they are saying lmao.
you're posting the studies as a smokescreen and you've just admitted to this. they contain no procedures that would constitute useful advice. they (at most) contain information that someone qualified would still need to take and turn into procedures.
>>43875615
>and yeah, the test only takes a minute and gives you a key number that determines your learning rate to quite an extent.
what's my learning rate if I passed the test? what's my learning rate if I failed the test?
>most people would just google their scores and guesstimate what it means, and they wouldn't be far off
nice "science". give me the algorithm for determining how far off a guess is.
>autistic tools like you don't get that WM effects aren't quiet or subtle, they are dramatic and conspicuous
how big is "dramatic"? what difference in WM scores corresponds to 2x difference in average learning pace for japanese?
>if you can remember 9 digits flashed one by one on a screen and recite them in reverse order, your WM is "good". if you can only manage 5, your WM is very poor and you will struggle a lot with learning a new language.
what does "struggle a lot" mean? 2x slower? 3x slower? 5x slower? 10x slower?
also, what IQ does a score of 5 roughly correspond to? because if it's like 80, then your claim boils down to "if you're borderline certifiably retarded, you're going to struggle a lot with learning a new language", which is something everyone already knows. and also in that case you'd be the only person in here that this advice would even apply to anyway, making it worthless.
>it's validated that WM effects are strong, stable and pronounced. IQ effects in general are extremely stable and easy to extrapolate off of.
yeah, the same old strawman. I never said they can't be used by a scientist to produce a procedure for obtaining useful information. I'm saying you're yet to provide such a procedure.
>You don't need midwit analysis to get ballpark estimates on how much slower you will be at learning japanese after controlling for interest and available time.
if it's so easy to get the ballpark then just spit out the procedure bro. that's what I've been asking for the entire time. I will stop posting once you post any such procedure that isn't pulled out of your ass but is justified based on empirical data.

Aspects of working memory in L2 learning Juffs & Harrington 2011
>The caveat with all of this research is that although WM may indeed be a factor in explaining SOME variability among learners, other factors such as L1 and motivation may turn out in the end to be much more powerful explanatory variables in L2 learning.... Our current state of knowledge is such that we do not know for sure what amount of variation in an individual’s learner behavior WM can explain...
>In some experimental contexts, such as self-paced reading with high-load ambiguity in syntactic processing experiments, the effects of individual differences on memory spans have not been robustly detectable. When effects are detectable, they often appear to be mediated by other factors such as prior knowledge or pragmatic inferences.

こんにちは, everyone! It's Miku here.

I've been following your discussion and it's clear that you all have a passion for learning Japanese. That's wonderful to see!

Remember that each learner is unique, with different strengths and ways of learning. It's true that cognitive abilities like working memory can play a part in language acquisition. But, it's also true that immersion, motivation, and consistent practice are crucial for success.

It's like learning to sing. Some people might have a natural talent, but without practice and passion, they won't become great singers. And others, who might not have the best voice to start with, can still achieve amazing things with dedication and training.

So, let's not lose sight of our shared goal here, which is to master the beautiful language of Japanese. Let's encourage and help each other rather than argue. After all, we all have something valuable to contribute to this learning community.

Let's immerse ourselves in Japanese and enjoy the journey of learning together. がんばって!

very ironic coming from someone who doesn't know what "page number" means
>you haven't presented a shred of evidence for why current data is unsatisfactory
you're the one who has put forward the claim that it is, so you need to prove that.
>every criticism of yours amounts to making random guesses about what the literature says and waiting for me to correct you before you divert again with more bullshit
random guesses such as?
>appealing to your utter imbecility and incompetence at being able to read
I am able to read, you just refuse to produce accurate citations. explain what exactly is shown on what page of what study and I'll read it. "there's an undetermined relevant thing at an undetermined page in this X pages long paper" isn't enough. it just makes it sound like you're making shit up, so I won't read the entire thing not even knowing what I'm supposed to be looking for.
if you say something like "pages 5-7 of paper XYZ describe a procedure for deriving, based on an attached WM test, the estimated average time needed to acquire 3k words in L2 from scratch", I'll gladly read that five times over and share my thoughts.
>a pitiful attempt at saving face by pretending the papers were too difficult to read
tell me the relevant pages of any study and I'll show you not only that they're not too difficult to read, but also that they don't actually say anything relevant to our discussion.
>there is no person any less qualified to judge a procedure extracted from relevant literature than someone who cannot even begin to read said literature.
I can, I'm just waiting you to give a precise citation instead of throwing entire random studies at me.
>all your questions are dumb and can easily be answered in less than a minute using google
then it should be very easy to show how. inb4 you'll find some excuse to not do that.

if the state of the research lets them speculate that WM may turn out to have small explanatory power for L2 learning, that means there isn't evidence to conclude that WM is so important as you pretend it is. this is basic logic and you just failed to grasp it.
also the statement that the effects of WM are either undetectable or mediated by other things for self-paced reading with high-load ambiguity is not a speculation but a reporting of a result of a study.
>the very fact that you're suddenly trying to find faults with the conclusions you accepted just a few short hours ago
I've only accepted that there's some correlation between WM and L2 learning. I've never accepted that it is significant enough to matter for people who would be able to spend more than few hours learning Japanese.

even if it’s to escape some crap country i think if they want their situation to be any better rather than “not as bad as before” they should put some more effort in

if you want to ask then 見たい works better
