I would just say it's more about extremist types and those who are insincere about Japanese culture and trying to co-opt it for their own ends, some will claim they are fighting for free speech but porn should be banned, some claim to not be censorship types but then hiss at Lollicon despite liking Shotacon. Today's climate is far less worse in many respects because we can have Death mentioned, Afterlife, Sexuality can be mentioned a lot more(if you notice nobody has issues with Yaoi, Yuri). fanservice is more shown and normalized amongst both sexes, but we are still behind in the sense of having Lollicon, Shotacon, age gaps, or things that translators seem to feel uncomfortable with and still hung up on thinking the audience reading is from the Fantl, social media these days and not realizing this is not for themselves but a general audience that knows the content better than they do and should treat it with the respect the authors wrote to it.
