Seeing Techi rest has always been my top priority whenever talking about the groups future. The idea of her graduating due to injury was unbearable to think about. But also, seeing the amount of hate she received from anti's and even keyaki fans, for being held in a position she didn't chose herself, has always been tough for me. If leaving the group means she can finally lift that burden of being the center, focus on her health, and pursue a career that brings her joy, I'll take that over seeing her suffer any day. As much as it hurts to see her go, I'm glad she can take herself out of a bad situation, it shows how much she's grown. I would like to see her continue in the entertainment industry, but if she decides to pull a Momoe I won't be too upset. Shiichan's hiatus really took me by surprise, mostly because I've always seen her as the type of idol who could do both, and management seemed more than happy giving her solo work that allowed her to dabble in the arts while still being an idol. Add that she graduated uni last year and seemed like she was really putting 100% into her idol life for the time being, so this announcement was truly a surprise. While as a fan i'm upset we won't see her for a while, I'm also very happy that she's thinking about her future, and that management have done something right by allowing her to follow her passion with the assurance that she'd be welcomed back if and when she chooses to be an idol again. I really believe it was the opposite: the girls got too comfortable with having Hirate as center and consequently lost all sense of ambition. Their stable popularity with Hirate as the masterpiece brought a sense of security among the members. Hence they accepted to build the group around Hirate and only worked hard to be a reliable support and worthy substitute when Hirate cant perform.
Only one members felt otherwise and voiced openly her desire to center and bring something new with the group which resulted into her decision to leave (be avenged Zuu!!!). While I dont buy the bullying story, it is plausible that some members were not being happy about her ambition. As for Neru, she may have wanted to aim higher considering her popularity and charisma, but because of her personality she didnt want to "disrupt the peace" and keep it low to avoid potential toubles.
Now that the shelter is gone, all of them have to get out of their comfort zone. I hope the arena tour helped boost the self confidence of the less prominent members like Koike, Harada and Uemu. Aside from pressure, lack of self confidence is also what drive them to rely on Hirate and leave most of the responsibility to her.

Working my way through the conversation to this point the thing that strikes me the most is the sheer level of conjecture going on. I think the reason for Oda and Suzumoto graduation is pretty cut and dry given the timing, but with Hirate withdrawal we are really in the dark.

I know given the scale of what's just happened that speculation is a pretty normal response, but let's not get carried away with our imagined narratives. If and when more info comes to light we might be surprised...

For Hirate going forward as a solo talent, I think she'll do just fine. I don't mean that in in a flippant way, I just believe in her to succeed at whatever she decides to do next so there's not much more to add.

As for the group, there's some serious rebuilding, and potentially rebranding to do. The groups brand is definitely damaged by the rumours (true or not) of bad management and bad member relationships and bullying circulating. My action plan going forward if I were managing Keyakizaka46 would be:

- Push ahead with 9th single release in 1st half of 2020.

- Don't abandon the groups angsty and dance-oriented image, at least not at first.

- Obviously re-shuffle the line-up for the single. W-center of Risa and Yuipon to project some stability. No senbatsu and undergirls system for the single. It sounds like Sato hiatus and Oda and Suzumoto graduations are effective immediately, so we only have 22 active members right now.

- Allocate some sakamichi kenkyuusei to Keyaki in the first half of 2020. I remember seeing on general Sakamichi thread a rumour about them being allocated 3 to Nogi, 10 to Keyaki, 2 to Hinata. If this is true, it would work just fine to allow for senatsu and undergirls system in the future.

- New members from kenkyuusei to become active as of 10th or 11th single.

- 10th single to be released in 2020, at least 2 singles this year. "Fresh" centre from 2/2.5 gen

- No immovable centre going forward

Just want to say my two cents on everything that happened, because right now being a Keyaki fan is really tough. (Apologies for the wall of text, just had a lot on my mind).

On the 4 members, Shii-chan is the only one I'm surprised by. However, I do hope for her best and that she will learn as much as she can while abroad. And when she comes back, I'll be so excited to see her again.

For Mon, she was never one of my personal favourites. However, she was undeniably the best dancer and she had such a great personality. I felt the pain when reading her blog since dancing/performing became somewhat of a chore rather than an enjoyment. I hope she can do well in whatever she wants to do.

Oda's graduation makes me feel so many emotions. Not just sadness, but unease, anger, and disappointment. Management is something that I want to touch on later, but even though the grad felt inevitable it was management keeping it hushed that made me infuriated. Dating scandals for my Western mind seem so archaic and it sucks that Oda (and also Shida) were punished with what I feel was a forced graduation.
That one segment (I don't remember where it was from, but I think a lot of people may know what I'm talking about) where Sasshi talked about the love ban and got opinions of fans made me see that I can't only blame management, but how the Japanese fans may be too obsessed with their relationship with their favourite idols. If a person's oshi finds happiness with anything (love, hobbies, etc.), I want to think that people would be happy rather than disappointed. Unfortunately, that isn't the case and any dating scandal ruins any idol (with a few exceptions).
And this is what makes Oda's grad hit so hard. Her blog crushed my heart and made me think about how Japanese/Chinese esports players blame themselves for everything. And seeing how much guilt that Oda put on herself felt so wrong. I only wish that she can bounce back from this and not go away from the entertainment industry. She was hilarious on KeyaKake, she has a great singing voice, and she (hopefully) has many opportunities she can take post Keyaki. For being my first oshi of Keyaki, I hope she'll find her way.

And Techi. She has the singing talent, probably acting talent (I haven't watched Hibiki or the dramas), and she is (in my eyes) one of the most loved and revered idols of the latter 2010s. And yet, she made me feel so conflicted on Keyaki's image. On KeyaKake, she rarely smiled or even showed up and she looked like she hated every second being there. I love KeyaKake, but seeing her made me feel infuriated because she always looked like she didn't care.
And with the music and the view of Keyaki, the complications of being a fan kept further intensifying. While I love every single that Keyaki put out and I saw how much I could love so many members based on the music, having Techi be the absolute center kept deflating me. I always longed for a new center (as I have seen many people express as well), and seeing Techi be injured when she was given 9th center made me think that nothing will ever change, and we will be stuck in TechiZaka46 until she graduates. Kuroi is amazing, but I can't help but only hear Techi and feel like this song could have been a solo song for her. It doesn't feel surprising that she quit/left/graduated or whatever. She looked like she was breaking down so Techi deserves a rest, and I know that her solo career will be pushed to the stars with how much S&F care about her for the most part. However, I can't deny that I'm excited to see a new Keyaki without the one person who has the most presence while being absent

So, what now? I know that even through all of this, I will continue to be a Keyaki fan. Idols, Japanese music, and most importantly the Sakamichi groups improved my life drastically. And while some people would leave because their favourite member is leaving, I am a music fan at heart.

What I think needs to change is how management deals with everything.

Let's not wait for 5 million years in order to hear news about members, singles, etc. With Shida and now Oda, they let them linger for so long and gave false hope for any fans since their graduation would be imminent. I highly doubt Japan and idol culture will change, and the love ban will (for me, idiotically) be maintained for all time. However, the fans want transparency. And for me as a fan, I rather have someone be less featured and "be punished" with a 3rd row, rather than making them disappear, say nothing about it, and only deal with it once they decided "Yeah, get out of here." This no doubt affects so many things, like fan reception, member morale, belief in management, and the affected girls that have to face the harsh world of being an idol. And if this can't change, I can't see a bright future for Keyaki.

I would like to talk about the "dating ban."

The idea that management has a "dating ban" and that its management who is "punishing" these girls. Thats not really true. Management doesn't have a "no dating" rule, management has a "don't get caught doing something that might make the group look bad or make the group lose money" rule. The members could be having nightly orgies and management wouldn't care so long as they don't get caught.

The fact is, in Japanese culture, there is an idea that if someone is in the public eye, whether they be idols or other "trivial celebrities" or more formal public figures like politicians, then that person should behave in a way befitting their station. Its not just an idol thing, it applies to everyone in the public sphere. And its different depending on what kind of celebrities you are. Comedians can pretty much do whatever they want so long as its not illegal or particularly salacious (like adultery or something). But just look at Sumo wrestlers. Sumo wrestlers have it tough. They don't even get to decide what clothes they get to wear in public. Everything is decided for them and if they don't fall in line then they risk their careers. That's just the way things are in Japan, and idols happen to be one of those types of jobs that have a certain behavior which is expected to be followed (i.e. no dating). Voice actors have it even worse. The amount of shit that voice actors have to put up with amazes me sometimes.

The other thing is that Sakamichi does not have a "no dating" rule in their contract. This was confirmed many years ago (I think by Matsumura during her scandal). And I believe there was a court ruling a few years ago that "dating bans" are actually illegal. However, that doesn't mean that a member can't be forced out for having a dating scandal.* Because that's just business. Think of it this way. Let's say there is an American girl group and it comes out that someone leaked one of the member's old tweets which contain racial slurs and other gross stuff. That member is probably getting kicked out of the group. The group doesn't have to have a written "no racial slurs on twitter" rule. She's become a liability and is therefore fired. That's basically how it is in idol groups. The public has a perception that idols aren't supposed to date. Therefore a member who gets caught dating becomes a liability to the group. I never really knew about this stuff for the idol "dating rule." I only perceived it in that way because of what I've seen being a fan for just 2 years now. I can respect the management for them trying to keep their image clean. I guess I just don't understand why there is so much harshness on dating and idols. I've only seen that it might be due to the fans reacting and thus, losing sales because of the scandal. If there are other reasons, I would really like to know.

However, I want to know why managerial teams don't address the scandal. Anytime I see a scandal happen, it's always been reported by places like Bunshun. And because of it, those members are taken off of any public place, and eventually (in a lot of times), graduate. I can see it as the management not wanting to stoke the fire. However, would it be good if officials say something or would it just lead to more drama?

Maybe this is why my perception of the dating rule is so skewed. I want some sort of transparency because I want to know how they deal with the problem. But when I see how they respond, it usually leads to the graduation of a member and management leaving it at that.

This I think is a Seed & Flower problem. Basically management lacking the courage of their convictions.

A member's "punishment" for a dating scandal really depends on how popular they are. Like look at Matsumura. She actually did something really bad. She was caught dating a married man. And it was a big deal in entertainment news. It was pretty much everywhere. So what happened to her? Pretty much nothing. She had to apologize. She didn't even get taken out of senbatsu IIRC, she just got moved from 2nd row to 3rd row. Why? Because she makes money. She's one of Nogi's most popular members and she sold handshake tickets like crazy. So her status as an earner for the group outweighed the damage caused by her scandal. On the other hand you have someone like Kawamura Mahiro who was not a popular member, didn't really sell handshake tickets, had her picture taken standing near a boy with other members around, and graduated a few months later. Like it or hate it, management didn't really beat around the bush.

That's why I don't understand these long hiatuses that Seed and Flower does. If you're not going to make them graduate then fine. If you are, then do so. But at least make a decision either way.

Its like Seed & Flower are too timid to actually make a clear decision on their own that doesn't come directly from Konno-san or Akimoto-san

The girls started this journey not knowing what will happen in the future. It's just like in life, where we plan our future, but most don't go as planned. There are so many things that result in that & with keyaki, we trully won't know since it isn't our lives in there, nor our future, but the girls'. Remember that hinata is only now starting their independence. Remember that keyaki was also same until after the 6th or so single. Nothing can remain as it is once feelings get into it. All these starts with who stays the center. I have seen such feelings reflect in hinata members blogs once the center was revealed as Nao again, same as with keyaki. We can't be sure of what will happen too. But if there is an internal conflict, it hasn't stopped them from their activities. The only thing that has delayed is the single. So I won't say the group is frozen. They are under an agency who sorta tells them what to do so all the delays and stuffs can't be put on any internal conflict going on.
We won't ever know what will change one day. They may be ok today, tomorrow they won't. I just hope mgmt takes care of hinata very well than they did with keyaki. That way we can say, they did something

I don't think so.
Both Yuuka and Risa paved the road on which 3ki will walk, but they have their own dreams and their own goals to reach.
I don't think they are the kind of people who will forget where they came from, and because of this, if they followed 3ki documentaries and such, I like to think they are pleased by this new batch of Sakura members as much as we are, if not more.

I have to wait 1 hour before I can watch the last docu, but I already agree with @blabla123
Seeing 3ki start and work hard and grown definitely created a connection. It's a process 48groups use since ages, with theaters and events and docs... and something standard in kpop.
I'm just glad Sakurastaff found a way to give us a glimpe of 3ki first steps.

I liked a lot the words Takahiro said to 3ki in the last episode; that the best courtesy 3ki can do towards their senpai is to surpass them and make Sakura stronger and better. More than a family, I'd like them to be a group made of people who all walk in the same direction and contribute each one in their own way to the success of the whole.

EDIT: Watched the last episode and at this point I doubt I'll ever have one oshi in 3kis. Too many members grabbed my interest for a reason or another and I suspect the ones who for some reason didn't, will definitely catch my eye later on. Maybe one of them will prove me wrong someday, but so far it's quite impossible to chose just one of them.

Their meeting with Yuuka at her grad concert was so touching! I'm glad staff decided to keep it for this episode, but I also loved 3ki viewing their first MV, so cute!!!

Some sparse thoughts after my first watch of the docu:

I may be wrong but, during the last year we are experiencing a revolution in the way Sakamichi groups are being promoted in regards to what it is to come... More specifically, promotion of the immediate future generation. I believe the predecessor has been Nogi 4th gen but at that time the focus was not on the process of entering the group but on the process of becoming an idol, that is after entry and during the 1st year. Typical to Nogizaka, and further pushing their identity of a "national" group with such wide span of activities, there have been the "doko e" and "skits" concept (which I cherised and felt envy as to why these are not somehow become part of Sakurazaka as well), 4th gen became famous.

However with 5th gen and the introductory documents, hype started to be created before incorporation in the group. This, and the first MV were the first steps in a new way of introducing a new gen. It has been followed immediately after with 4th gen Hinatazaka and 3rd gen Sakurazaka. However, in our case (and a great great BRAVO to S&F) for that, it has been this documentary, focused mostly on training, that set these new standards. Here we also experienced a textbook case of "turning a disadvantage into advantage" by having the fact that two girls were obliged to cover their identity for a specific period of time, finally adding more spice, content and actual interest to the hype! The whole project has been a great success (one proof for that is the speed at which the small but so precious subbers community reacted and delivered subbed versions of member docus, the 7 episodes and even SokoSaku episodes at the speed of light! - THANK YOU subbers, boys and girls)

tl:dr Kudos to the management for introducing 4th gen Sakurazaka in a way that will remain unforgettable to us fans, for making us so hyped, so on edge to absorb everything that will follow, for rekindling the interest for the group and for setting new standards for the way to introduce next gens.

But above all a big big CONGRATULATIONS to the 11 girls that grasped the opportunity and made the best out if it. Their reward will be the love and appreciation of the fanbase old AND NEW, and the even bigger success (and big numbers) for Sakurazaka46, a group that has been travelling in rough sees for the last 5 years, the most tortured but combatworthy bunch of girls there is...

P.S. My (first watch) highlights:

1. Riko's eyes when Shizuki is receiving oxygen treatment (7:29-7:33)... OMG those eyes, so pretty, so compationate, this girl is a National Treasure!
2. Airi wearing the overcoat after shooting the MV (22:46-22:52)... I LOLed so hard with her overcoat literally sweeping the floor, what a baby-sized she is!
3. Their reactions when viewing THEIR MV for the first time... I was so touched! The reaction of people experiencing and appreciating the fruits of their efforts, teamwork and hard work!

Been a bit busy with studies and whatnot, decided to show up to finally give some praise to S&F. As many of you mentioned before, as of recent they have really been doing a great job with the 3ki's. The latest addition to the documentary series specifically caught my attention. As Phil puts it "turning a disadvantage into advantage" strategy worked really nicely for me personally. Murai and Yamashita might be pulling a second Neru this time, joining later but getting the exclusive spotlight. I am still not that good at recognizing them all, but the aforementioned pair has definitely left an impression. My lack of knowledge is especially embarassing since I'm going to the Omotenashikai tomorrow. Truly should have studied my 3ki's better beforehand. Let's hope that the event itself and girls' self introductions and perfomance will be memorable enough to help out the clueless stupid me :lol:

As for the upcoming tour, I find the timing a little bit strange. I get it that now is the sakura season and all, but wouldn't it be better to held it alongside or just before releasing the 6th single? Maybe I'm just spoiled, but it feels like not enough new time has passed since the Dome. Anyway, I'll be placing my bets on W-Keyaki fes. or whichever next big concert they're planning to do. By that time some 3ki's are sure to hit the senbatsu and oh boy will it be interesting to see.

Documentary +2 Another Story is great, recapping a lot of things in an artistic way, as well as introducing Murai Yu and Yamashita Shizuki.

They seem to be the best dancers in the group, better even than Miu and Airi. Teacher had to warn them to try to dance less like dancers and more like idols. It turns out that Yu-chan and Nagisa were actually a team as dance leader, with Yu-chan knowing dance, and Nagi-chan able to communicate better.

Great scene of the group watching their MV for the first time, evidently thrilled: exclaiming how cute Airi was in the first image, then chorusing "cute" as various members had good shots. So rewarding to watch Airi, seeing herself featured, and hearing big support from the members, feeling such pride and joy. At least that's what I imagined I saw in her eyes, above the mask.

It was nice to see Airi kneeling on the floor beside Shizuki during the training camp, when Shizuki had exhausted herself. Airi also acted like a captain, speaking for the group smoothly when they were thanking the crew after taping of Natsu no Chikamichi.

And Shizuki is not just some cute little burikko. There's power in her dance, and there was intense determination in her face when she started dancing at one point. And she is not always tongue-tied.

I believe Takahiro praised Yu-chan during the training camp for singing loudly. I began watching the documentary series feeling that Takahiro's choreo for Sakurazaka was too frenetic and not artistic. I ended it with deep appreciation for his expertise and wise advice. Although my feelings about some of the choreo remain.

I hope comments about omotenashikai will come soon and be positive. Yu and Shizuki are a bit late to the party but the documentary has been planned so well and the timing so right, I think it will make little difference.

Since we have two more great dancers in the group though there's no way I'm not asking for a real dance competition now. Akbingo had this kind of episodes so I don't see why we couldn't have them considering the amount of talent in the group.

Mariko was completely right.. but it took a lot for me as a fan to accept it.
Because when you love idols is hard to see them surpassed by their kouhai even when is better for the group on the long run.

There're already younger members who reached goals Uemura or Fuuchan will never even see from distance (and I love them both very much) so a part of me will always feel bad for them... at the same time if we want Sakura to succeed we need new gens be more ambitious, and all the group willingly accept the challenge.

@Philosophy Senpai I absolutely agree with you, I named Fuuchan and Uemura because it still pains me the fact they are always "left behind" even if their presence in Keyaki first and Sakura now is fundamental.
By goals I meant the various solo-jobs some younger members have and they never had: magazines contract, runaways, CMs, dramas, centers...

Visually she reminds me of Twice's Nayeon.. the shape of the face and her cuteness, probably. I just saw 6th episode subbed and I'm glad both Airi and Miu voiced their love for the group and how they are enjoying it, since they both are used to be alone.

@ukifune I did worry too about Airi's ambitions, but Sakura is not Keyaki anymore and I think she'll have all the space, time, chances and, most important, friends and senpai around her, to help to grow into the idol she wanna be... things not always present in Keyaki-times.
Zuumin was different too; I think we went about this many times in the past years, but I still think Zuumin could have become an idol without being part of a group and manage to shine anyway, perhaps even more.
Airi on the other hand already looks like she understand the importance of being part of something more than Zuumin ever did. And I'm very glad for it.

Or, in other words.. I may or not may have covid but once again I'm a slightly bit better and a little bit less worried because I stumbled upon her new MV. (no way to go through the test until tomorrow or later days because of holydays so I don't know, but my family and I are physically ok so far, so... yeah, cross all our fingers.)

I remember this happening a lot in Keyaki's time... I would be worried about real life or we would be fighting about Techi around here and socials and things would get out of hand fast and often (and sorry but, LOL, we were such ass*oles on both sides from time to time), and then BAM new Keyaki MV, new song, new Techi... and everything would be alright once again.

This doesn't happens anymore with Sakura for me, and I'm quite sad about it... because it was a great feeling, a great boost no matter what, so I'm really, really amazed and happy it happens now, when I'm so down and so worried for everyone.

I'm looking forward to see her movies and dramas I didn't see yet, but there's something in Techi performing in MVs that will always hit me differently. Maybe it's because I got to know her through Keyaki mvs first, or because music performing Techi is my favorite Techi.. I don't know, but I'm truly happy for this little gift.

And once again this proves I need mvs to really like a song, because for me this song had way less impact when they performed live then she had today - like.. one year later - on a Mv.
