I would like to respond to Meru here because i know a lot of translators are on this thread at times reading about what people say.

>Do you genuinely want this source material to be treated well in translation? Or Do you want to put someone else down?

Let me say I can also acknowledge some can be funny and relatable with Steiner’s booster shot reference because I know enough Japanese to know it’s not completely changing it but it adds nuance to it for fun and silly purposes that add nothing really to the storyline itself. But I do think broader society is mad because of things we are seeing from “professional” translators that agenda push like TWEWY Neo in terms of "Cultural appropriation" or even "Down with Capitalism" when it's not really remotely related to what the Japanese is saying, society who just wants things they read to be close to the source material without altering any important story lines or events. Especially in cases like Seven Seas having translators who choose to avoid certain things that make them feel uncomfortable(Not translating certain paragraphs) or flat out altering an important aspect of a character who is a crossdresser and is a male but they turn it into transgender when they are not transgender at all.

I think consumers are different because we have kind of reached a point where Japanese Anime, Light Novels,Visual Novels and Manga is mainstream over the last 4 years that the standards are being raised from small niche community who has inside jokes amongst each other in the days of fansubbing and VHS trading to where people want the product to be as it is. I do not mind jokes here and there that relate to source myself which is clever and could add on top of things, but I do think there is room to say that altering important events, character development, or inserting agenda stuff that might be political in nature or altering words like “lolli” or “Shota” to be Pedophile is just not a good look(maybe calling it Little Boys Love or Little Girls Love would add more nuance without being demeaning?). Also I get that some people go overboard with their criticism I understand that trust me there is still people that get mad overall with Seven Seas despite apologizing and rewriting things back to normal or those that nitpick small things that add nothing to anything and complain loudly. But the translators that act like children who caused the mess, that start fights are only fanning the flames and really making this worse and not having enough introspection to realize they messed up and have room to improve themselves through the criticism. Besides I am one of the few who can understand nothing is perfect, mistakes exist. But we must also understand that not every translator in the community has the best interest of the source material at heart, or possibly care as much about it as much as the audience or the creator does. If this was not the case then I would agree on the fact Translators should be paid more and should have better conditions overall. Because why not? If they do a great job and elevate the source material and have it close to the Japanese material then there is no reason not to dedicate more money to their hard work and more people will pay into said product. But if it’s altered for memetic purposes and does not elevate the material then it just will be people not buying and we will all be here complaining about this for the decade.

The situation with translations is fundamentally hopeless, I think. And though both sides share fault, the majority of it belongs on the translator side. I don't want to generalize, as there are exceptions, but a great deal of them tend to be friends with one another and they all congregate on Discord servers and are relatively homogenous insofar as their attitude towards consumer criticism is concerned. To be somewhat fair, it is understandable at times given how many moronic complaints they receive; the customer is not always right. That being said, there is an overwhelming precedent to ignore good faith critiques and, instead, focus on bad faith arguments and insults for a variety of self-serving purposes. Partially social media clout, but primarily it's rooted in a general aversion towards any retrospection. Essentially, they're just being defensive. And, well, I get it; people like Meru are very emotionally involved in the industry and no-one is perfect. I have done this in my own work as a provider of electronics. It's easier to dodge responsibility entirely and focus on the *unreasonable* customers to make yourself feel less bad when you fuck up. If you squint hard enough you just might convince yourself that everyone is an idiot save you.

This isn't healthy for the industry but unfortunately it's the predominant attitude. I see translators retweet, squabble, and write entire essays on stupid people being stupid, but I can count on one hand where a genuine error was pointed out and a translator stepped back and said, "Yeah, I fucked that up. My bad." It's also extremely rare for a translator to offer some insight on a controversial localization decision. At best, we might get an extremely passive aggressive paragraph or two about why a controversial decision is actually a stroke of genius, and it's usually rife with an obnoxious tone of voice which, I presume, is supposed to come across as educational but, to anyone of sane mind, resembles patronization more than anything. Barely any weighing of the options. Rarely do we see an entertainment of any possibilities other than their own. Of course, it's unrealistic to do this for every single localization choice, and I'm not suggesting that, but I'm sure all of us can think of a few prominent examples where questions regarding controversial choices were met with silence. Worse yet, if it gets controversial *enough* it becomes an inside joke among them and they start spreading it to other visual novels.

Perhaps a new job is in order for translators who aren't prepared to accept and learn from criticism. Source material should be given the utmost respect, but throwing people at it who clearly are not equipped to do the work justice in the first place is not a solution to the problem.
As someone who does fan translation work in my spare time, I constantly check and double check to make sure that I have done an honest job that is worthy of the original while doing everything I can to avoid common cringe meme translation shit (しょうがない always being TL'd as "it can't be helped" or xならy always being translated "If it's x, it's y" to name a few of the most glaring examples). There's no reason you can't have both an accurate script AND one that reads like a normal human being wrote it. It doesn't take THAT much effort to do, yet somehow neither pros NOR fans seem to be able to handle it.
I get this strange feeling that the true source of many translation issues can be nailed down to a few simple causes though.
>translators don't spend enough time with the source language prior to jumping into translation
>translators don't spend enough time with high quality examples of work in the target language either
What we seem to have is a lot of translators who have become far too comfortable getting by with too little knowledge of the languages they claim to understand, and you can tell simply by reading the garbage they produce. I challenge people to ask translators/localizers about their thoughts on 10 light novels they've read in the past 6 months. I'll bet they haven't read a single one, because they CAN'T.
While translation is a skill of its own which must be practiced separately from reading and listening, one's ability to produce quality translations is FUNDAMENTALLY LIMITED by the ability to read and comprehend the language in the first place. A JLPT N1 certificate represents a bare minimum of knowledge one needs to START being able to understand Japanese in a meaningful way, but it is not the end goal like many people think.

Nekonyan has more of a backlog than MG or JAST, funny enough. This could change after AX though, especially since NN doesn't have a panel. Sekai's backlog is just ridiculous, even if you don't count all of the feng titles

>> No.40204763

Anyone has a link to the non-steam (non-JAST) version of Aselia the Eternal and does it have english translation ? JAST and the OG translators had chosen to translate the all-age version because they are anti-loli and didn't bother to translate the latest complete version that put back H scene.

The problem is less the amount of games and more how long they've been there. Nekonyan aren't even as old as a lot of the others' announcements.

JAST and MG are kind of ridiculous in that regard. Django and Sumaga announcements are older than Sekai project, I can't even remember when they were announced. Maybe 2012? MG is less extreme, but Hou was announced 2015, and we only got the Rei chapters recently. I still think Sekai Project is the worst when it comes to backlog though, more than 30 titles is kind of ridiculous, especially when some of the titles stuck in the backlog were crowdfunded. It's one thing to take years to finish up something; it's another thing when you were already prepaid to do it.

Problem with MG, and now Jast, is that they want to keep up a monthly schedule. This means that difficult projects get put on the back burner to release easier titles a lot faster. These are still relatively small companies so the can't spread their resources enough. I'm guessing NN backlog will now also stay big for quite a while unless they start releasing way quicker.

And it's fucking nothing. So many titles and they actually just gave an update on a couple of them. The most embarrassing is Rance IX which has been in "script insertion" for seven months now and they only said "uh, the beta is closer I guess?"

>> No.40212632

>>40212552
Wut, they gave updates on pretty much every title they still have left though. Pretty meaningless updates mostly but still. Only HS and Luckydog weren't mentioned because they are non existent at this point. I'm more worried they only have 2 announcements lined up for AX.

The only titles they didn't give an update on were Hadaka Shitsuji FD (which is probably dropped), and Luckydog1. Why do you care about those?

They usually split their announcements between AX and Otakon.

When you insert English text things bug out. It isn't as simple as dragging a text file into the folder. Companies normally don't give the source code over so most VNs require programmers to reverse engineer everything.

I can't believe it was actually fucking nothing. How long has it been since Sona-Nyl was announced, 5/6 years? What happened to the MG that would get stuff out in a year or two.

They did add 2 announcement slots for AX and confirmed that Kenzan was fully translated, so that's something. Optimistically, what they said about Rance IX means that they are ironing out the last few bugs before beta testing, but they probably just did PR speak on that front. Same goes for Sona-nyl to be honest, I doubt 87% intergrated is absolute confirmation that they are almost done with the nature of programming. If they are able to get betas within a couple of months or so, they are likely enough to release in 2022, but who knows what new bugs will be revealed with testing? I'm not that much in a rush for Rance IX to be released, since Rance X isn't anytime soon anyways. I just want the release to happen before Rance X is fully translated so Rance IX work doesn't hinder work on Rance X.

I think X is already being worked on. At least I remember Doddler and Ludo posting screenshots from a test build.

Found the story of GSS very entertaining and had fun reading it altogether. The investigation story with a mix of paranormal, alien villain and gore was quite satisfactory to follow.
I understand you'd be let down if looking for a horror story that makes you jump out of the chair. It's not that. But, Dead Aegis? C'mon.

I'm ok with them taking their time on this stuff. Yeah, it sucks and I'd rather read it right now, but SLC's work is very high quality and he always tends to add QOL stuff into the games that the Japanese releases don't have.
