Genki is okay for beginners. You can read it in about a month if you read a chapter per day. and it gives you a good foundation for independent learning. You have to start somewhere.

I think the idea is that furigana is crippling you from really learning kanji. So since I don't know any kanji anyway it's certainly not going to hurt. But I was just wondering if somebody else did it and actually learned some kanji along the way. I took two months for N5 so going by that pace, it should take 10 months to reach N1 and fully master Japanese.
But jokes aside, I saw a reddit post where someone talked about the Australian-Japanese embassy or something, and people that want to work there have to attend a full time language class for 12 months. So theoretically that should be enough to "acquire Japanese"

same experience here man. what really matters is input. the "context" you get from remembering a card after flipping to its back and seeing the audio/pic/sentence is laughable. try using sentence cards for some words and see where that gets you.

keep in mind ciaran (thread's best learner, soon dethroned by moe) just used normal vocab cards with no sentence audio or pics.

i all! So, I started studying japanese a few months ago through a paid online course (made by a brazilian folk, because I thought learning such a complex language would be easier if I learned about grammar and more complicated stuff in my native language). To be honest, I think it's well structured and everything: it's got a nice progression, there's plenty of content up until JLPT N2 levels, they offer live classes to help students with doubts about specific topics, sentences to add to my Anki deck (and explanation of particles and words), there are dozens of audios of conversation between two native people and other nice features. It's based on SRS because you gotta have 2 decks on Anki: one for kanji and one for regular sentences (hiragana + furigana). I spent quite a sum on it, BUT (there's always a but eh) I was wondering if it's worth it to move to an online english-japanese course instead (imo content made by english speakers is most of the time much better, in comparison). I'd say I'm an intermediate student, reading longer sentences isn't dreadful anymore, but listening and speaking skills need a huge improvement. Kanji-wise I'm nearing the 200 mark (my ultimate goal is to learn the most used ones in day-to-day life, specially in regards to N2). Basically, I think I'm in the middle of the road.

My question is: is it worth it to move to a top notch course, considering I want to achieve fluency (or at least advanced level) in the next 12 months or so? BY THE WAY, I'd appreciate honest comments and ideas from advanced/fluent/native users only. If you're an intermediate/newbie student, don't comment please. that's true but a large part of that is recognizing a specific combination of kanji and spacing in that specific sentence. i guarantee that any half decent brain what start making connections to a specific card the second they see the general shape and opening words of the sentence that has nothing to with the actual transmitted meaning of the sentence itself
