This song means a lot to me, but I'm kind of iffy on how Rin is tuned. I am literally debating buying Rin just to make a cover of this song. Maybe I could commission someone else to?

I conclude therefore that Quadimension is good while VSinger is CCP shilled propaganda. Choose your chinese synths wisely.

The west is lost for music culture, we lost in the 90s. We don't give A FUCK what music sounds like, people just buy music because of what it says about them to listen to a certain band. Not that Japan is any better, but at least they have a healthy indie scene. Our indie scenes are starving and located in specific cities for 5 to 10 years at a time and then they die out or get bought out by the establishment.

>>23949070
are you delusional? Japan doesn't have a "healthy indie scene", you'll literally starve if you aren't signed to a management company, the only reason vocaloid producers managed to thrive in an "indie" scene like vocaloid is because of the big bucks to be made through the many publishing labels that sprouted during vocaloid's heyday, and the biggest names moved onto bigger projects or collab with huge companies for CFs.

The music industry is fucked regardless, all I want is for some western producer to get popular and encourage more people to produce their own music for it's own sake and not just to make a buck, at least for a few years.

I dunno where you're looking at, but I listen to a lot of extreme music and those people manage to make international tours whilst other countries' international artists can't manage a national tour every 4 years at best.

Vocaloid has gone through several different stages of life. I wouldn't call it dead, but you'll see some people clamoring for the 2012-2013 stage, which had the highest popularity. (Personally I thought it was cancer because a lot of the activity was due to Kagepro and other wannabe manga series)

The main issue is that there's no room for mini producers to climb out of obscurity, you might like that commercial and underground shit coexist but tell that to the Ps working their asses off to get recognized.

Sega, Crypton, MikuExpo and every other company are fucking idiots for latching onto a handful of producers for 10 fucking years, dooming the whole vocaloid culture in the process.

You know, that is true. I'm really bugged about the Project Diva song selection, too. It's like the prerequisite is 10mil youtube views - impossible for most producers. Also, producers like Deco*27 wouldn't be nearly as popular without PD, so it's a self fulfilling prophecy. Still, the most I can do is support those producers who I want to see recognized, so that's what I've been doing.

This is due to 2 problems
>V Flower sounds bad in these songs, usually because it's too high-pitched for her. (Looking at you, Charles)
>Utaites have a much easier time gaining recognition than producers because they can produce videos faster and reap all the credit. Singing is much easier than producing. Casuals like utaites more, too.
Problem 1 is much easier to fix than problem 2. Fixing problem 2 requires casuals to acquire a taste for vocaloid and then put in the effort to support the official upload, which is unlikely.
I've also noticed some producers half-assedly making a Vocaloid version in order to say it's a Vocaloid original. Did you know Literary Nonsense by Eve has an official Miku version? And that it was only uploaded to Niconico? I didn't know until months after the fact. Grinds my gears.

I think Wowaka's death opened up discussion about producers a lot more, with people, even western fans, putting in the effort to actually appreciate producers now. It annoys me when people ask why no new producers are coming up - it's because you don't support them! I also think the struggle to have your music actually get noticed makes people less likely to use vocaloids other than Miku, maybe Rin or Gumi too.

>> No.23973358

>>23972941
While I personally disagree with your problem 1 (I think Charles sounds great), you make a great point about utaite, and it's why I can't really stand them. My other biggest complaint isn't someone like Eve, because the Vocaloid versions are sort of hidden as you said, it's producers who start out producing while angling to be the next Hachi. There seem to be some producers who start making Vocaloid songs and then switch to self vocals as soon as they get some popularity, and eventually drop Vocaloid altogether (see Balloon, KurageP, seeeeecun, Yuukisan, Hello Tanita-san, mao sasagawa, etc.) Nothing against Hachi, though, because I don't really think he planned his career that way. Anytime a producer uploads a self-cover version, or releases a self-cover album, that's usually the beginning of the end.

As an aside a lot of Eve's songs have Vocaloid versions in case you weren't aware, here's his VocaDB page: https://vocadb.net/Ar/10233

Yeah I kinda feel you about self-covers. I'm getting that vibe from Ayase, but it seems like he's part of a successful non-vocaloid project already, so maybe he's legit after all? I don't know.
I didn't know that about Eve. I've actually been avoiding his work on purpose because the fact that he's an utaite bugs me... only listened to Literary Nonsense because of an unrelated fan video. Might go through his mylist later.
Also, unrelated, but this year's Racing Miku figma looks wonderful. I'm not a buyfag, never cared much for racing miku, but this one has caught my attention. The android aesthetic fits the ball joints well, and I love it when Miku's robotic nature is played up.

>The song is about how the vocaloid community has changed (it has, a lot of producers have gone pro).
I get the feeling that the reason they leave the scene is because they don't want the character taking away from what they think should belong all to them. All the fame, all the credit. Hachi had one job to make a positive song to celebrate the occasion. But he did a really cynical take on it, deciding to point out this evident change. It was painfully apparent he was paid to make it. Maybe Giga was also paid but you don't get that feeling from the song. It's why it was so insulting. It's like him saying "Okay, I will take the money but I don't get what I'm supposed to celebrate, singing songs in the desert."

Then all the "Holdouts" like you called them started patting him on the back for it. Reason being that someone who they looked up to validated how they already felt but it goes deeper than that. If it's a desert who is to blame for it? Were they chased out? The fans didn't love them enough? Their albums weren't selling enough? Like you said they weren't obligated to stay, they left by their own choice. Why should I pat him on the back for pointing out the desert he himself created? Why does he have to push into my face the result of his own actions? Obviously the desert must be a consequence of something but consequence of what? Apart from the producers who passed away why did the others leave? I get the suspicious feeling the song protests against that part of the community that cared more about the characters than the producers behind them. It's like a great star like him didn't want to regress into being a mere shadow producer for a virtual entity again. It's why he made it into a duet as much as possible.

If he were to sing 100% of the song in his voice and Miku wasn't in the video would you be able to distinguish it from a diss track? It's like him saying "We were called to sing for your party but I don't get what we are to celebrate, we're traversing a desert where nothing will grow for millenia, we all left because you cared more for Miku than you cared for us as people, if you still remember Hachi respond to me, I will sing for you for today then it's bye-bye-bye until it goes back to normal." It feels weird that he framed things this way. Instead of focusing on being grateful for his place of origin. He drives home how Miku is nothing without the people who used to make her songs. It's like the idea that Vocaloid fans put him where he is doesn't even cross his mind. It's why he is so full of himself in my opinion. He doesn't want to give credit, in his mind it was all about him all along and going back to Miku is to regress, something beneath him.

Like I said before the main issue is that everyone latched onto a handful of producers for 10 years, all the official marketing done with miku was composed by ryo, kz or mitchiem.

Imagine if, for example, every new diva game had a new producer for it's opening track? Sega tried to set a new precedent with X but it was too late, and even then they brought ryo back for the intro song which absolutely sucks.

Same goes for the concerts, there was no room for new producers to shine unless they already had the backing of high production values.

I think most people are sort of turned away by the "robot voices" but want to listen to the songs. And enough good Vocaloid songs of different genres and vocal ranges are released, so all different kinds of Utaite can take advantage of them. And Utaite are able to begin lucrative careers like this, and that inspires more. In some ways I kind of think of Utaite as like a parasite, they take the work made by others and use it for their own gain (I know this is an oversimplification, but still).

As much as I dislike Utaite, I still sort of think that producers singing their own songs is worse. Utaite need the original versions as a starting point, whereas when a producer starts doing self vocals, there is no need for a Vocaloid version.

Dixie Flatline, I really liked the R&B influences in his work, and his lyricism felt a bit more mature than most producers of his time
>Which song do you have the biggest emotional connection to?
I'm gonna go full boomer but it's Just Be Friends, that song hit me like a ton of bricks, the harmonies in the song are also really pretty, specially the "yuruyaka ni kuchiteyuku kono sekai de agaku boku no yuiitsu no katsuro" part, it's just a weird melancholic yet upbeat sound.
>Who is your least favourite producer and why (if you have one, that is)?
Deco 27, I don't hate him or anything but his signature sound is really grating, and his newer music feels very repetitive... at least his most popular songs, the chorus of ghost rule and habina sound so similar to me.

My favourite producer is Yuyoyuppe by far. His stuff just hits a nerve and devastates me in the most beautiful way. It lets me connect to a vulnerable side of me I don't often get to without a lot of work.
My favourite song is World Is Mine, though, I just think musically it's brilliant and it's impossible for me not to get sucked into it. I love music of all kinds, so just really loving a song counts as emotional connection to me. If that doesn't count, then Story of Hope has made me cry more than once.

>Who is your favourite producer and why?
Probably Mitchie M. His extremely catchy style and command of all different genres is not only impressive but also made me realize "wow, maybe Vocaloid can actually sound professional and like real music".
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5Ge7nbu8TY
There's not a single track of his that I dislike, only ones I'm indifferent to. I own both his albums and they're the only Vocaloid CDs I've ever bought. But then again that doesn't really mean anything because I'd buy whoo's stuff in a heartbeat if they were actually distributed physically.
>Which song do you have the biggest emotional connection to?
I don't really understand this question. I'll never forget Two-Faced Lovers till the day I die if that's what you mean though. If I had to pick a single song to represent my Vocaloid it'd be that. I still remember freshly and fondly my first time hearing it in Project Diva Extend and I still haven't gotten tired of listening to it. I always make sure to play it during every Project Diva session.
>Who is your least favourite producer and why?
Your favorite producer. Or whoever did the Daughter of Evil songs. Or whoever did Butterfly on Your Right Shoulder. Or whoever did Paradichlorobenzene. Or whoever did Kagamine HachiHachi Flower Fight. All those horribly tuned screeching non-songs can go straight to hell along with anyone who likes them.

Very tough decision. I like a few songs from many different producers. If I had to pick one, probably koyori, since he's very consistently good. Right now I also really like r-906, john, nuyuri, powapowap, dateken. I really need to put together a list of my vocaloid favorites...

>What song do you have the biggest connection to?
I'm going to pick one happy one and one sad one. Happy one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94MiXWVVZq0 Sleeper ft. Rin, I first heard this one when I was 9? 10? and it just made me feel happy. It still does. One of the most powerfully happy memories I've ever heard

Sad one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXC2wO1XdMI Airhead by Picon for the spot-on lyrics and general vibe. Honorable mention goes to At the Mercy of the Emptiness by Pinocchio-P, which I connected to a lot in middle school. Honestly, there are almost too many to choose.

>Least favorite producer?

Maybe mothy. Or Jin, since kagepro was terrible. I like Deco*27, but I agree with >>23978579 about the repetitiveness of his work

>> No.23979196

I love Vocaloid but anyone who refuses to accept that it's a shadow of what it once was is absolutely insane. Really if anything it's more like it was back in 2008 or so, a small group of dedicated fans plugging away regardless of mainstream trends.

Most of the big producers have left aside from a key few, we're getting fewer big hits consistently (you'll see the same songs cling onto the NND rankings for months and months because nothing's coming out to replace them), and Hatsune Miku and co aren't exuding the mainstream presence they once were. Hell, Miku's almost a nostalgia thing at this point. It's clear that Sega produced Project Diva Future Tone as one last big cash-in for what they saw as a dying franchise, which is why they mashed everything they had into it (I'd be curious to the thought process behind the Switch game).

I know it sucks to hear, but the numbers don't lie - the Vocaloid scene is nothing like what it used to be. Hachi was right and everyone that's pissed at him is in deep, deep denial.

Sure, but those were usually just the absolute chart smashers like Melt or Packaged. These days even middle of the pack songs will linger for 6 months+.

I'd honestly love to be proven wrong on this one, but I haven't seen a convincing argument other than "nuh uh!!!" That's not to say that the scene is completely dead - producers like harumaki gohan and Police Piccadilly come to mind a good new talent - but at its peak we were getting drowned in so much content it was hard to keep track of it all.

Indeed. You can easily make the connection between Bye Bye Blue Memory and Michael Jackson. Never heard Miku make those kinda sounds before. I love how Mitchie M does that stuff with literally every single song of his lol.
I was also truly stunned when I first heard Kanashimi wa Aijou no Youni. What other Vocaloid music has that distinct Brazillian style? My only Vocaloid experience at that time was the Project Diva games so you can imagine how I felt. Vocaloid suddenly went from catchy pop tunes to real heart and soul with staying power. Makes me wonder what would happen if more western artists cared enough to use Vocaloid to its fullest potential.

The difference between 2008 and now is that now we have a catalog of millions of songs, nothing feels new anymore, every genre has been done to death, so it feels like we've already heard all the new songs coming out.

It's kinda what happened with rock bands in the 2000s, there's an established formula that's been proven to work so everyone's doing it, to the point where their sound meshes together.

A personal turn off for me is the fact that most producers don't use vocaloids for their MVs anymore, it's always some random OC chasing after a silhouette or some shit like that it's so boring. As much as I agree with >>23979063 when it comes to daughter of evil, butterfly on your right shoulder, etc. at least it felt like it was the vocaloid playing a part, things used to be fun.

The "middle of the pack stuff" now has to compete in the minds of people with 13 years of highly filtered quality content. If you got many of those same songs and released them up to 2010 they would probably be top in terms of tuning (though to be fair technology and technique improved a lot) and style (even if nowadays they sound derivative because most were already done well), and would probably get the producer enough fame to get stuff like help for PVs and support from the commercial side of vocaloid so they could fully focus on that career.

It's kinda like Bach, during his time he seemed derivative because he just seemed to play what everyone played and people were wanting something different, but looking at it from outside of current trends, eventually people realized that he was actually a brilliant musician. We don't know what the "middle of the pack stuff" today might be remember later when people look outside of the simple weekly/monthly trends.

My point is that it's unfair to simply label quality music as "middle of the pack" just because they didn't become immediate hits due to changing trends and increasing competition, though I understand your point that it's probably harder now than ever to start as a vocaloid producer and become a "legendary" producer.

That's possibly because it makes it easier to sell songs without dealing with crypton and the influence of stuff like kagepro with producers wanting to create their own universes that they can expand in other medias if successful.

Though it seems to me that in the higher end (mostly by older already popular producers) it's comparatively more common to use the actual characters. Though I'm not sure if it's because it's an older culture or because it's more advantageous for them since it makes it easier to make stuff for crypton and other companies.

Like I said, I'm fond of some of the newer talent coming out and I'm looking forward to a few of the upcoming releases. When I say the scene has declined I'm talking more about the sheer presence of it, like the number of people involved and the amount of music coming out. Dateken, Kikuo and Sasakure.UK. I can't decide between one. Dateken's music is simply the comfiest and cutest to me, Kikuo has not released a single song in his entire work history that I didn't like, always manages to find a way to try something new and his attention for details is amazing and I like Sasakure's storylinies, OC Donuts, the melodies he chooses and how catchy his music always is. mothy. His songs are what got me into Vocaloid. I love how diverse his discography is, no two songs sound the same. He's done a bunch of different styles and I'm into all of them. The best part of his songs are the melodies, goddamn I love the melodies, the PVs are pretty and the stories are interesting.
It's great how he hasn't changed from the early days, even his new stuff feels straight out of 2009. I'm glad some part of my favorite Vocaloid era remains. Also he gave me my first waifu Riliane, and I was pretty into his novel series for several years. He had a slight influence in me becoming a Rinfag too.
>Which song do you have the biggest emotional connection to?
Daughter of Evil is the specific song that got me into Vocaloid 7 years ago. It's also Riliane's theme, who is still my waifu in the form of a Rin derivative. I listened to the original at first, but I switched to the 2015 remake when it came out, and the extremely nasally voice in it is one of my favorite uses of Rin, if not my very favorite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W77q-kK8iA8 I wish there was more Rin tuning like this.

Enjoying 100kaiouto currently. I like the flow of their songs. Favorite of all time might be mikito.

But I've been sticking to HoneyWorks for a while. Their Vocaloid tracks are beginning to sound samey, and they're only ever alternate versions now, but I'm glad they still try at least. Wish they busted out other loids besides miku (and gumi when she's allowed out of the shed) more often.

>song that clicked
Back in the day there was this one ballad Len had of being a pianist who lived next to a violinist girl and becoming childhood friends with her, then they parted and he made it big when he was older. It was one of the vocaloid songs I still vaugely remember and moved me, but I cannot for the life of me remember its name (and the video doesn't seem to exist on youtube anymore). Either that or Eraser and the Riddler Who duology since all of them i watched in the early days of my vocaloid interest

Not really about producers, but just a nitpick. I don't really like when they pitch loids up in songs. Much as I like Niru Kajitsu's songs or rocoro, some songs would just sound better if they lowered the key so flower can work her magic. Same with stuff like dramaturgy, just doesn't work with miku's vocals. There are some cases where it's done well but a lot of the time it makes them hard to hear.

Absolutely. Amazing lyrics can make a 7/10 song a 10/10 for me.
Obviously the music itself is probably the most important part but lyrics and vocal edit are not dismissable, ever.
For example if a song has "not good but not too bad" music and the lyrics are very low effort then I would probably dismiss and forget about it.

One of the reasons why I am able to read and speak the language right now is because I wanted to understand japanese song lyrics.

I don't need English subs anymore but some songs are way easier to understand than others because Vocaloid is not friendly on the ears to begin with. I still have to really concentrate on the lyrics to understand. Mitchie M for instance is very easy to understand (at least when he's not throwing butchered Engrish and Spanish in) while Pinocchio P's faster songs are impossible. But then again I can't even make out English lyrics half the time.
Music videos with the lyrics in Japanese is the best way to fully understand songs and that's probably true for any language.
As for tips? Uh, keep at it!

Yeah, at first i tought "damn all those weebs wanting to learn japanese" but then i realized that it helps a lot understanding japanese music and the experience is much richer. I will try to learn it after i learn italian first. The trick is to really just to stick with it even if the progress is slow and takes years.

We all started somewhere. Learning hiragana/katakana is a good start.
People hate on romaji but I think it is fine to enjoy the learning process and make it easier.
My biggest advice would be is to learn how the language is pronounced. Find a romaji subtitled version of the song from youtube or use a romaji converter (these are not correct all the time). Put the lyrics on the side and try to sing along or just read it together with the song. With this, your mind will be able to kinda understand how the language works over time.
And then you will be able to connect what you have learned from the written language with what you have learned from the spoken language.

As for me, and I don't know how it was for other people; I was able to understand almost all sentences in spoken language like music lyrics before I was able to read almost anything in Japanese. And I never had to study Japanese grammar except for one or two things. Being able to spot translation mistakes was how I noticed this.
I think this stuff depends on the language properties of your mother tongue. Even if you are learning learning Japanese from English like me.
Then I started studying because I was like why not, I already know the language. First katakana/hiragana and then kanji. I'm still not done with kanji because I can't read every single Japanese word that I know, yet.

Basically:
You can take it easy and make enjoying the media your main reason.
Or you can go hard at it and study for a few hours every day.

I've had this conversation with others before.
Basically, my thoughts are that any given character who you waifu is always going to be your platonic ideal. There's not much difference between a vocaloid and, say, a character from a story-light fighting game in terms of canon defined personality. Even more developed characters from anime and such are always going to have blind spots in their characterization that you'd fill in with whatever you want anyways. So I don't think lack of an established canon personality necessarily makes it impossible.
Additionally, my perception of her is built out of bits and pieces cobbled together from music I really like that uses her voice, stories her songs portray, that kind of thing. It's not canon, but nothing is, and that's kind of the point. So it isn't that there's nothing, there just isn't anything strictly official.

It really depends, some bands are geared towards the "idol" style where they sell a person as the core of the experience (regardless if he is the most talented or not). For those the band members and song writers are exchangeable. It's usually the vocalist for those but not always (sometimes it's even the songwriter, and the vocalist/performers are just an exchangeable instruments like vocaloid, and pretty much what vocaloid was created to be).

And others are about the collective effort, where it's either a scenario where no one is replaceable (like some rock/metal band that all fans recognize every member contribution) or everyone is (like an orchestral group where the important thing is what they play and no single member could carry it by himself except maybe the conductor).

Since execution is pointless in vocaloid outside of the few live concerts (everything is usually synthesized instead of recorded/performed), what matters is solely the creative aspect (both composer, presentation - like art, animation and PV and the instrument). Which is why those 3 are always the ones mentioned, and each person can decide what matters more to them.

What would you do to improve Meiko's design?

I don't mind her natural hair and eye colour, it actually makes her stand out in the sea that is anime designs. Sort of like Hanayo from Love Live, her plainness is her charm. She's also the only cryptonloid without blue eyes (unless you count Miku's as green or turquoise) which is nice. I think the worst part about her design is her outfit. It's awful and plain. Sakine's looks better, but not by much. It makes me sad because design really does matter in vocaloid, and Meiko sounds amazing to me when she's tuned nicely (which I know is hard.) Even her V4 outfit looks bad to me. It's something a trashy stripper would wear.

I like her V4 design, I just wish her color scheme would be less generic and her V1 would ditch the shoes and used a smaller, maybe more loose belt. But then again, I think the lack of animu hair and very simple design in contrast to the others helped fanartists and producers to form a certain image for her.
