In the year 2020, a historical event spanning multiple days that would change the fate of the DJT took place. The place was a thread known as the Daily Japanese Thread, a mildly-known thread in /jp/, a dead ass board on the popular website 4Channel, and the man was a legend named Quizmaster ザ・真実カードカウンター: 20.9k !.quiz.MncY, better known by his alias “Stupid Fucking Retard” and "Adolf Quizler". In this thread, Quizler would go down in history by carelessly making some really stupid fucking posts.

Quizler had fronted well up to this point, but things had decidedly took a turn for the worse, when he ran into a group of local ruffians, named the "C.O.R.N". This mysterious group was aptly dubbed the "Coalition of Real Ninjas" and their skills in ninjatry were displayed in full effect, as the group had honed their real ninja abilities in this local thread. Things were looking tough for Quizler, as Japanese language cred was reportedly on the line. Out of options and looking to prove his worth, Quizler took a bold move. Quizler decided to post in Japanese, thinking that he would achieve victory in combat with elite C.O.R.N member Jamal a.k.a v＾-＾v !l08I6k8X8M, after days of exchanging posts in English. It was a risky wager, and a furious battle ensued over the Japanese language cred that was at stake. But in a shocking turn of events, Quizler was quickly and soundly defeated by Jamal, who had displayed his impressive prowess of true ninja skills in his short-lived match with him. The match ended so quickly and shockingly swift, that onlookers stood in complete awe, with many describing it as unprecedented in DJT history. Witnesses stated that Quizler had gotten his ass completely beat, and reportedly fucked.

what you guys aren't realizing about having 20k cards is that even if you still don't know japanese, you have the perfect foundation to acquire japanese. quiz could start listening and reading for 8 hours a day and in another year he'd be a god in terms of fluency even though his kanji reading ability would drop. he would shit all over ciaran.

I feel the "average" learning speed for hiragana is greatly over-exaggerated. What I mean by this is that what seems like a large amount of people say things like "You can learn hiragana in a few hours if you try!" or "It only took me a day or so". Sure, you can get short term recognition of them quickly, I can run through Hiragana pro on my phone, but I don't consider that actually learning them. I mean, at that point you only "know" the printed forms anyway and you'll end up trying to write a lot of them wrong.

So far I've been seriously studying after work since the 14th of April (taking about 7 days off in-between study days) and I've filled 17 pages of graph paper with kana, ensuring I'm writing it correctly, learning stroke order, making small corrections like the placements of stroke 3 and 4 on ふ. I have friends that went to Japan for a semester in college at multiple schools as part of their Japanese class, and after speaking with them found that they learned usually 5 a week in the beginning, with bookwork added in, of course.

My current pace for hiragana is about triple that and I still sometimes get disheartened reading comments saying they learned it in an evening. I recently learned that a friend of mine is thinking about quitting because she spent hours learning 2 kana and now she thinks she's so slow compared to other people that it might not be worth the time to learn this language.

I know I shouldn't google "average time to learn hiragana" because I'm going to see people bragging that they "learned it in about 3 hours". But I'm sure we all did when we were learning because we were/are excited.

I guess the main point I'm trying to make here is that if you're learning something like this and you're learning how to do it correctly, it's going to take time. I've gotten frustrated when I forgot what せ was, ignoring the fact that I remembered the other 30 kana I knew. Take a step back, take a breath, and jump back in. All that matters is your own achievements in learning this language.

having to look up words cuts reading speed significantly most of us are still looking up 2 to 4 words per page at least that can easy add 30 seconds to a minute for each page not to mention the time to think about sentences or phrases you didn't understand well the first read through
