after testing a bit, this patch isn't sufficient and also introduces a bug into the counter

it isn't sufficient because it doesn't ignore enough symbols (this is easily fixable though)
the bigger problem is that while when adding a line those symbols are not counted, the same is not true when you delete lines

e.g. if you add a line with the following

the counter will display 0
but when you delete that line the counter will tell you that you have read -11 characters

so basically the logic goes that you can review the same cards more frequently to improve your retention rate, which saves you time cuz you lapse less but wastes time cuz you review stuff you already know more.
the alternative is you review less and save time that way, but it uses more time cuz you'll lapse more and have to relearn stuff.

Hi,

So I have an intermediate level, meaning 70% of my Japanese is correct, and I understand 70% of the conversation when Japanese people talk (60% of anime, 50% in shops with a formal talk, 40% of TV, 10% of very official announcements).

I can read few kanji, maybe in the 50s now? I don't know, the ones I use regularly in text messages, but can't write any by hand, I read and can write hiragana, I can't read katakana aside from those I have spotted many times. (So I need to learn them at least quickly).

I learned mostly in daily life, mostly in the company of people with a good language level, so my Japanese is a mix of very natural sounding and very correct wording, and sometimes, but more rarely, more casual and grammatically lose. (Not on the やばい side.)

I also used grammar books, which is also why I'm mostly quite solid on many points, but when it comes to more complex sentences, I speak a broken Japanese, which is frustrating, just as it's frustrating to have people often easy down their Japanese when talking with me. (Not that I meet them a lot these days.)

Still, I'm very used to have casual drinks with Japanese folks, we speak Japanese and it's perfectly fun, so although it's not perfect I can do that.

I've been feeling like under a ceiling for a long time. When I break this ceiling, I will start to be in what I call "speaking Japanese", and my progress will happen inside that. Not speaking a perfect or very rich Japanese, I can feel there is a whole syntactic world of "real Japanese" that is still perfectly unknown to me, not mentioning the kanji continents that are essential to get the depth of the language. But for daily life, I'm first targeting something closer to my English level, and when I break this ceiling I will start walking in that direction.

So I had started a couple of online lessons on Italki, but I didn't have regular time enough to work on my textbook, do exercises, learn pages of vocabulary, so i quickly stopped. Although going with that for a couple of months would be the best way to break the ceiling.
