/jp/ - Otaku Culture

View post

>> No.22041538

I decided to keep the OP more concise this time around. The previous thread taught me that the definition needed more work.

I thought to look back at the denpa posts and threads of many years back to better understand how people in the Western community view denpa. As it turns, people have been arguing for years about whether moe songs should be under the scope of denpa, or whether denpa is a genre or an umbrella term - disagreements to the very beginning. Past posters put up great essays about what they consider to be the essence of denpa. I also read about limited fan following in external boards as early as 2003, and how various collections of denpa information came together (mediafire links, pastebin descriptions and the denpa omaera webpage). All of this, and I still have six more years to go to catch up with the present.

The bottom line is that I have to consider more than just the music to understand "denpa". Both for Japanese, who were in a constantly changing environment with the growth of otaku culture, and for us here, who were at the grace of a limited number of collectors and uploaders. There is much more to be learned.

On a separate note, I have a shipment of several interesting albums bound to arrive tomorrow. I'll update once I get my hands on them.

To the guy who asked me if I would consider selling parts of my collection instead of all at once -- yes, probably in a couple months from now if I can't move it all at once. So if you really want something maybe drop me a line to reserve it.

And to the other guy who deplored selling the collection for college money -- relax bro I'm in Canada. It's obviously going towards beer!

They for the most part disbanded after their 1997 major debut CD album, with each member going their separate way. Shinji Hosoe and Ayako Saso maintain Troubadour Record to this day and publish their music under their personal label SuperSweep. Ikuko Ebata works under ZIZZ STUDIO, mostly as a lyricist but occasionally as a performer as well. Nobuyoshi Sano and Hiroto Sasaki have had mostly commercial careers. Hosoe and Ebata were surprised at the connection between their music and the term "denpa", but unlike Momoi Haruko, it didn't seem like they found it offensive. Perhaps they forgot, but they had a similar term for their upbeat and quirky music. When I finally get to it, I'll put up a blog post about it all, but alas, I can't get myself to write right now.

This track accompanied this peculiar album - "harmony", by circle KEYBOARDSOFT in 2004. It was a Harry Potter arrangement album, in which vocalists Haruka Shimotsuki, Tohko Morinaga, Miya Kunii and Kaayu Aoi participated. The song I linked is a joke version of another song in the album, named "Hogwarts Express". The linked version is understandably labeled "Nya Nya Express". Unfortunately, I never managed to get my hands on the album, but this piece was featured on Tohko Morinaga's "Nagobest" best-of collection. I love how the five of them (four singers alongside composer FOX) break down in laughter, realizing the silliness of what they're doing, saying "it was cute!". Simply magical.

Interestingly enough, I could find a link between the idol industry and otaku, to explain in part why this song feels like a moe song to me. I'll write about it in depth in the future.

In the past weeks I've thought to myself about when the elements that make denpa and moe songs today manifested, under the assumption that no single artist exists in a bubble - every musician was influenced by musicians of their current and past generations. Science fiction, for example, has been the original otaku field of interest, so it could explain why outer space became a recurring theme in denpa music later.
The Fukugawa street stabber, in his rambling about being manipulated by aliens with electromagnetic waves, was the manifestation of science fiction in a mental illness. Then, the "burikko" behavior of Japanese idols in the early 80s was all about a guise of childishness and playfulness worn by suggestive adult women, accompanied by equally meek and innocent pop songs. These same years, the bishoujo drawing style became increasingly popular, enveloping the entire otaku community, and later being shaped into "moe". Both served to create a sexual image that is not aware of its own sexuality.

Another thing to consider is how Western fans thought of the music as it became popular in the early 2000s - the impressions of past listeners remains today. The fights over whether "moedenpa" is "real denpa" are a result of never properly separating the two. This also appears in the thread title, as it's "Denpa Thread" and not "Denpa and Moe Music Thread". The two have separate foundations and separate developmental paths, joining together for brief moments throughout the 90s, and commonly appearing together ever since the early 2000s.

All of this came to me after speaking to several associates of mine who focus different fields, namely the idol industry and otaku culture history. This step back means I need to revise what I wrote so far, and think over certain things. That said, I think Manikyua-Dan still is a great example of how these topics touch, so it's about time I continue writing about it.

As long as a person is mentally ill, is there not a big difference between taking a fictional character as a beloved waifu and claiming that aliens penetrate your heart through a microwave oven? For all we know, Denpa may be real. Moe may help relieve social pain. I think both concepts are the same as the symptoms of religious people who are crazy because they live in a world where actions such as levitating and walking on water are considered humanly impossible. So in reality, you need a lot of escape and what looks like a geek culture. I also wondered if we were really the subject of a hybridization/conditioning program, due to the similarities between the way facial features of the anime are drawn and the depiction of a certain alien species.

The gist of it is that moedenpa is simply J-pop with cute vocals and therefore not true denpa. It was mainly a way for early-mid 2000s denpa fans to harass fans of later denpa music, like Nanahira, Choko and Momobako. The term "trudenpa" is some sort of a parody of that mindset.

When I first started browsing these threads around three years back there were still people complaining about the prevalence of moe denpa, but these sort of discussions eventually dwindled, giving space to other topics.

On one hand I can see what they are getting at. On the other hand I can't help but feel that most "moe-songs" have no problem being grouped into "crazy/weird". Just stop up for a moment and think about what japanese society at large would think about the lyrics that e.g. 桃箱、ななひら、とろ美、MOSAIC.WAW, 33.turbo, etc sing. It's maids, lolis, and various sexual innuendos all over the place, just to mention some topics that often pop up. What a lively time!

I have a feeling that the denpa community is getting smaller and smaller, only I have this feeling?

Once nanahira, toromi and mosaic stop, the genre will eventually die in Japan I believe. No new artists will emerge. Tell me a new artist who has got some space and attention in the scene in the last 5 years?

The reality is that no girl and no guy wants to become a denpa singer / arranger nowdays.

the denpa genre will boil down to kawaii moe music that will occasionally get some comiket releases when it parodies the music of some game or something. Great original releases no more.

The old guys stop and the new guys don't even know what denpa is.

The 2020s won't be promising, guys. The otaku culture of the 2020s will be filled with vtuber, alt-idols and smarthphone games. That's what kids born in the 2000's and 2010's like. We realize how time went by when we realize that the 90s will soon turn 30.

It wouldn't be the first cultural phenomen that appeared suddenly, and died quietly. For obvious reasons we usually read about them as a footnote in history, but I bet the practisoners at the time were just as upset. Though there are already many things about otaku culture from the late 90s and the 00s that have largely dissapeared. Perhaps we must resign ourselves to seeing the beauty in what was, and try to kindle forth the next generation of cultural phenomena.

>> No.22156552

>>22156508
For whatever reason, I truly felt like denpa would be a more transcendental phenomenon, but just as you said, the enthusiasts of those bygone fads or phenomena or whatever must've thought the same. I'd like to keep an optimistic outlook and hope that denpa keeps on giving for a long time from now, though.

>> No.22156576

>>22153909
What I've been try to say, is that people have argued for the past decade over misunderstanding of fanmade terms - "denpa song" is the name Japanese fans gave to music showing denpa qualities, and likewise, "moe song" is the name Japanese fans gave to music showing moe qualities. These appear in the singing, composition and/or writing. From the early-mid 2000s onwards, the two qualities almost entirely stopped appearing by themselves, with most artists and bands combining moe and denpa qualities to varying degrees. It was only after that the combined moe-denpa music spread into Western otaku culture fanbases, but the distinction between the two qualities wasn't retained - "denpa" became an umbrella term, and "moe" was simply thought to be a part of "denpa". What people really were arguing over was the degree of moe expressed in the music.

Going over what you've written, I see the same mindset of placing "moedenpa" under the denpa umbrella. I think that the right way to understand it is putting "moedenpa" inbetween moe and denpa. The vast majority of music shared in these threads over their entire history were songs containing both denpa and moe - from UNDER17 and MOSAIC.WAV to Momobako, Nanahira and Toromi. There is considerably less music containing only denpa qualities and zero moe.

>>22156508
I don't think it's seeing the full picture if you only attribute it to single bands and artists. The dwindling sales of eroge and weak presence of otaku community as opposed to the mid-late 2000s are greater limiting factors in exposing new fans to the music. That said, the music has been going strong for almost 30 years now, under different names, so I don't really worry for it. We'll have it in one form or another.

I'm surprised she returned to music so soon. If she wants to keep making music I think she should keep releasing albums as momobako, but doing it at a slower pace.

I think singing may be her passion but on the other hand it takes more than singing to sell an album. Her release cycle was too intense for several years in my opinion. When I look at my favorite musicians across genres, it takes them a year or more to put out a new album.

She's tried a lot of different things by now and made great albums before. I respect her decision but at the same time I wish I understood it better.

She never left music really. I saw her doing streams where she fooled around her DAW and made some music. It's good to know she genuinely likes it, that or she wanted to use her skills since it'd be a waste to throw it all away. As a vtuber you still have a lot of freedom. She's one of the vtubers that makes the most money by the way, it's pretty crazy to see an artist you've known for years quickly become so successful there.

From what I could tell, it looked like her ASMR videos were her most popular videos by an order of magnitude. I'd imagine that's her cash cow, which kind of makes sense I guess given her skills.

My personal theory is that her and many other denpa artists are running into the same problem, which is finding good music to perform. The main difference between momobako and nanahira is that nanahira made a hit, and she's since chosen to perform music almost exclusively by her collab partner on that song. Momobako never found that hit and has had a hard time finding a composer she liked. Therefore, she pivoted to a different medium that leverages the skills she's built over the years but simultaneously doesn't require a composer.

Both have become pretty YouTube-ified and possibly also targeting a younger audience. I'd also guess they're one of the few denpa singers who were full-time. Anyway, that's all just my speculation, I could be wrong.

I'm glad she's continuing to make music but as the other posters said said she makes a lot of money from youtube now, with the asmr videos bringing in a huge chunk. I fear the denpa scene is dying out but she was smart enough to pivot.

Recently nanahira has been streaming games on her Youtube channel and I've noticed that alot of people comment about that nanahira should become a Vtuber. Believe it or not she already has and it seems not many people know about it.
Her Vtuber channel name is " Nijino Mahoro".
