"The only place left" would suggest that there used to be more, but that is hardly true. The truth is that most boards never tried, never even thought of trying to take it easy. In fact, in some cases not taking it easy is written firmly into the board culture and embraced by its userbase. To take it easy one must first realize that it is even possible.

True, but that's because stormfags are incredibly autistic for wanting to discuss politics on imageboards anyway. However it was not neccesarily the impolite things such as racism and sexism as to the reason why nobody liked /n/. And adding to that too, 4chan was only supposed to be a board for otakus anyways. It was not supposed to be for anything non anime or Japanese related. Only "weebs" were supposed to inherit the site and only "weeb" things were supposed to be or was discussed about in the beginning (I would add /b/ as an exception, but even /b/ was "weeb" like in the beginning). However the rampant normalfag invasions beginning in 2007 killed /b/ and then infected everywhere else. Heck, moot also had a huge part in killing board culture too (R.I.P /l/)

Constant racism and political incorrectness is, for lack of a better word, good. Casual racism and other -isms, whether pretend or genuine, do not really affect the conversation and serve as a filter like you say (same as guro, loli, futa, etc.). The problem with /pol/ is not that it's racist or politically incorrect. The problem, ironically enough, is that it has its own brand of political correctness that it pushes. /pol/ is essentially a nest of moralfags. They want to moralize about their pet causes, which derails threads, and shame posters for not conforming like the slightly mutated normalfaggots they are.

Not only is that not true, they wrote like that both ironically and unironically. And unironically for the sake of ironic memes. You got warned for the same stuff that gets you warned nowadays, saying shit made entirely of nonsense. Even as late as old /jp/ era, you eventually got the degenerated catchphrases "tfw" and "wch2hufug". It's when you write something like "weabos miss me w/ tht ntr shit 2bh cucksoid" that you get warnings/bans. If anything you'd probably get banned for saying "lolocaust" or something nowadays since the old "pwnd n00b rotflmao" gamer/nerd culture died off.

The word "crossboarder" is ideal for starting trouble because it has two related but significantly different meanings, one of which is meaningful and one trolling. Some use it to mean essentially "anyone who visits any board other than /jp/" or even "anyone who has ever visited any board other than /jp/". It suggests that the speaker sprang fully formed from the fabric of the Internet in 2008 and didn't come from /a/ or /b/ or whatever other board like the rest of us. It also implies that the speaker is above visiting any other board on the entire Internet and sticks to /jp/ alone, which unlike the previous claim is possible, but highly improbable. In either case it asserts the speaker's superiority and is meant upset people who are self-conscious about their history of Internet usage. Arguing about crossboarding is a fairly effective form of trolling and thread derailment when deployed at the right time in the right place.

The other meaning of the word is "someone who brings obviously foreign and unwelcome posting habits to /jp/". This meaning is useful and valuable, since such behavior should be noticed and discouraged. If you don't discouraged it /jp/ will be assimilated into generic "4chan culture" (i.e., the culture of the largest boards), which keeps getting worse over time. The confusion between the two meanings is why I personally don't like using the word "crossboarder". I call those who blatantly violate the board culture "raiders", "invaders" or just "newfags" (I never liked the term "newfriends") depending on whether they seem malicious or not.

They're the minority. Look at how much the activity on /v/ increased in the past few years, it's obvious that the average /v/ poster is a newfag. It's even more obvious when you see their posting patterns. Keep in mind /v/ was the epicenter of GG, and video games are such a common hobby (if you consider that it's one) that /v/ it draws in more posters than any other board by interest alone.

I don't believe this. After all /jp/ is containment board and its culture since the beginning promote loose subject and little rules other than the basics. At the very least things live and die fast on fast boards, on moderately slow boards you have slightly less threads about one specific subject that get repeated all the time but the few that are there still end up getting a large number of replies and get to stay up for days on top of that. I say moderately slow to distinguish from ones like /po/ and /t/ where threads can stay up for years. Haven't been on /v/ in a while so I can't imagine how bad it is.

That is why /vr/ is reasonably good. Since it is only for games from 1999 or before and new games for old systems, though, it doesn't cover oldfag favorites like Deus Ex or Metal Gear Solid 3. It also has an odd clash of cultures going on. For example, in a single thread about a Japanese game you may see a schizophrenic mix of EOP shaming and anti-anime posting. It could be nice to have a /v2k/ board for video games from 2000-2009.

Deus ex can stay, but anything made after the year 2000 is absolutely same-shit garbage. I don't think /vr/ should admit DX, Halo, GTA III or any other post-'99 game it doesn't currently allow. The year of the Dreamcast is a very good cutoff point for the old era of gaming. What I am saying is that it would probably be nice to have place to discuss those games that isn't /v/.
>anything made after the year 2000 is absolutely same-shit garbage
More same-shit than before? Definitely. All garbage? No, you're completely exaggerating. For one thing, Windows Touhou comes from that era, along with a dozens of great Japanese and Western games by small developers. VTMB is from 2004, and it's almost as good as Deus Ex. (2hu mod when?)

>> No.21630114

4chan is just as much of a social media as twitter or facebook now, and there's nothig that's going to change that.

/jp/ has managed to keep its charm because of how obtuse it is to get into the board culture, because /jp/ is precisely that: a board whose theme is its own board culture. That alone is enough to block the entrance to any curious normie because if you don't know the board theme, you simply can't post in it.

This is the same reason why boards like /v/ and /a/ are so popular and in turn have lost any semblance of culture that they had: 4 am threads are no longer allowed in /v/ because it doesn't fit with the meta of the average normgroid making a thread about the latest console or the latest game they bought; touhou is no longer allowed in /a/ because it doesn't fit the meta of making a thread about the latest attack on titan or my hero academia chapter. Those boards are ruled by the quantity rather than the quality, and there is an ENORMOUS quantity of normies that enjoy zero quality crap.

Réné Guénon wrote a book about a similar phenomena called "The Signs of the Times and the Reign of Quantity". I urge anyone looking for answers to read this book.

What is your definition of 'social media'? The defining feature of social media, as I see them, is that you have users with a persistent identity and the content posted there is tied first and foremost to some user. This covers everything from to LJ to DebiantArt to Twitter, but not really old forums (the content is in threads, not user feeds) and definitely not imageboards (no identities, no way to follow a user). The closest 4chan comes to being a social medium is when you search for particular tripcodes on warosu.

Oh wait, I've realized that you're serious. I wasn't being disingenuous. I actually meant that 4chan isn't a social medium, functionally, regardless of whether what gets posted here comes straight from Twitter, Discord or what have you. "Social mediam" means more than "it's shit and normalfaggots use it". It's a specific type of service. No matter how much the quality of the content here degrades (and I've seen imageboards so far gone they're probably worse than DeviantArt), it won't be that. The social dynamics are different when there are no identities.

I blame Steve Jobs. Once stuff like the iPhone started getting big, it gave every normalfag and their mother easy access to flood over onto the internet. Phones should've just stayed something to make calls with.

It wouldn't even be so bad if newfags these days weren't so obnoxious. Call them out on something and instead of just silent acknowledgement of their mistake or lurking, they'll dig in to defend even the most retarded of positions or tell you they've been posting here since 2003 the exact day the website went up. It's honestly a chore to argue with them and it's not hard to see how a board like /a/ that used to be so proud about its board culture barely has a shred of it left due to those combined factors. /jp/ and the smaller boards are fortunately niche enough to avoid floods of newfags, but I think it's just a matter of whether or not the topic becomes "trendy". As a side note, it's an absolute tragedy that "waifu" became an empty joke word. I wonder how many people are still around that actually love their favorite character in an autistic way.

It definitely does depend on the topic. /jp/ has mostly remained in some form of equilibrium minus the occasional phoneposters and threads moved from /v/. Now compare it to /lit/ and /sci/ for example, which attract regular visits from /pol/ and are pretty wonderful this time of year.

Absolutely. Ironic weeabooism killed every single 'niche' thing being an otaku had and normalized it so normies could relate to them. Truly, these creatures are less than dirt, and when the day of lunatic hell comes, I'll spare none

Ironic everything has killed a lot of niches. You get people who have never played a certain game shitting on it because of memes, you get people who don't own any weapons posting on /k/ and pretending like they do when you tell them to post their guns.
Its really terrible and it makes it next to impossible to have a conversation you know is legitimate because the other guy could just be lying through his teeth post-post-ironically just because he gets a slight stiffy from the idea of trashing board culture. For fuck sake, almost every board on 4chan at this point has had anti-anime posters who get made that people are posting anime images on a fucking anime inspired website.
I really don't know how 4chan will survive this besides living so long its no longer a trendy place to be for new posters and they all flood some other site instead.

This is a pretty interesting take. It's true that back in the days no one can deny there was a degree of racism and homofobia on 4chan, but no one reaaally took it seriously. I don't knwo if you remember but 10 or so years ago, 4chan was accused of being a sexist site on some random feminist websites, and I remember being on /a/ at that time and thinking "well, it's true that when someone says they're female, people pretty much react in a sexist way". But no one gave a shit about sexism beyond making sure attention whores got in the way. I do think though that imageboard culture needs this only in a very small dose, administered in a manner as to be implicit as possible so as to avoid making /pol/tards feel at home. Honestly 4chan was doomed from the beginning. America is way too much of a political country and it was only a matter of time for the internet to be engulfed in politics. Look at Futaba, they're still as stupid and filled with memes as /jp/ was back in 2008. Japanese people are perfectly capable of living without talking about politics.

Rates of individualism worldwide are going up, especially in the west.
Some people take it in one direction and take everything far too seriously regarding their identity. Respect my pronouns, etc.
Others take it in the other direction, the irony more associated with 4chan and reddit types. These are people who attempt to avoid having any kind of identity or genuineness, so as to be free agents.
They're both examples of extreme individualism, and they're both a huge pain in the anus.

How many genuine waifufags that are actually in love with their waifu are still around? What about those annoying turbo-autist bronies or people who ended every sentence with emoji? I don't even see emoji anymore. It seems like a cruel twist of fate that certain parts of 4chan's culture and memes would become normalized on the internet for lack of a better term. I'm not saying I like the current state of things or defending it, but that's a natural evolution of (for what it's worth) culture and language. It's actually kind of interesting in the academic sense how some things influence and change the others.
It's not a new thing either, leetspeak is one example (the -> teh, own -> pwn, later lol -> lel -> kek -> jej etc.). Except here we are in the middle of primordial soup (or collective consciousness) from which these memes emerge.
I guess the problem is that with the influx of new users there rate of those mutations increase while the quality proportionately decrease. Sort of like industrial revolution or something.

There seems to be a huge misconception of /pol/ across all of 4chan. Every board tries to pick on us thanks to the lies about /pol/ planted across every other board. /pol/ is not the enemy here! The enemy is of a foreign source!

Good thread? This thread was doomed to turn into a meta thread from the very start. I don't even see the point in meta threads. There's no discussion here, it's just petty whining. You wanna make /jp/ better? Make fun threads. Make draw threads. Make OC. Be humorous, ect. I have a feeling that a lot of the supposed "oldfags" reminiscing over the good ol' days are actually just newfriends trying to fit in by showing how much they learned from a quick encyclopedia dramatica search.

/a/ and /jp/ were way better off with less moderation. Not intervening with the discussions is how a culture naturally grows. /a/ had the classic Sakura Fish but the mods banned it. And now look at /a/. /jp/ used to be a very hands off board. People could talk about practically anything here. It was the un-official 2d/random board. But the mods started getting more rulecucked and now look.
