I think the original Tsujidou-san was better. Same idea of being based around silly antics, but Tsujidou had a core story to it.

Waka-sama was fun to read, but the actual story was incredibly weak. Like, what was the point of the characters before the final arc? Sure, they weren't boring or anything, but it just felt weird to introduce a bunch of characters only to have them never appear again. It's almost like they knew they wanted to write arcs about specific Japanese folklore but didn't put any thought into how it would integrate into everything around it.

Well for famous games there's always Shumon's stuff, Asairo in particular is pretty great and probably a good change of pace if you're looking for something with less action. Or Goo's Himawari and Aqua After. Romeo's Saihate no Ima drags on quite a bit at times but it's pretty unique.

But you should definitely dive into Baldr sooner or later. The story quality in Sky is a bit bumpy at times and it suffers from repeated content in subsequent routes, but the gameplay's genuinely really fun if you like action games. Heart has worse story and showcases even more what kind of a one-trick pony the writer is, but improves the even gameplay further.

10 years ago maybe, but now? It's pretty bad, honestly. If you want gameplay, there are way way better options than a game that tries to be all about customization, but where 80% of the stuff you get is useless, things generally don't work that well and the creators tried to make everything as annoying and time consuming as possible. (i.e. weapon exp and uses gain being limited in one battle and bound to your normal save, so you can't just reload a battle but have to replay entire routes, and so on)
I also personally dislike how little influence you actually have about the action. It's more the strategic approach than typical action, given that many enemy attacks aren't meant to be dodged, but rather "dealt with". But that's obviously just me. I just felt that too little really works for that to be fun. (i.e. forget about melee, that's not even remotely worth the hassle against a ton of enemies)

What? Melee is great especially when you get to air combos since it means you can grab a mob and pound it to dust in relative safety from other attackers, and juggling gets especially important when the game starts throwing a bunch of elite enemies against you at once. Not to mention the game allows a lot of creativity in regard to customization due to sheer amount of unlockables.

I can agree about weapon EXP related stuff and if I'm not remembering wrong it's actually one of things Heart remedies since you get access to chapter select earlier that lets you move to any previous battle or scene while retaining EXP, not to mention the whole EXP system is better due to grouping up weapons so you only need to use one in a "class" rather than each one in the strict unlock tree that Sky uses. Not that you would need to grind anyways as long as you switch up your loadout once in a while like intended instead of sticking with the same weapons all the time and wasting all possible EXP.

My biggest beef with Baldr's gameplay would be the fact that most boss fights are really, really easy. They're given plenty of different moves, but once you get them into a combo you can rape them in no time. Only the final bosses in Sky and Heart's last routes were actually difficult, and the vast majority of challenging fights are when the game pits you against many elite mobs at a time.

The problem is that yeah, you can do super flashy melee combos that permanently stunlock them and kill them in a twenty second long spectacle after you practice and get all the timing and cancels down... or you can circle strafe with literally any two ranged weapons and kill them in twenty-five seconds while snoozing. And it gets worse because the boss battles are a scant minority, and most of the time you'll be fighting groups of enemies. You don't want to be doing the long elaborate melee shit. You just want to get the fuck on with it.

And then you have the unlocking and leveling system where it actually fucking changes the cancels and timing as you play makes the big combo gameplay not worth the effort except to swing your dick around in combo exhibition clips.

I mean puns literally have the connotation of being jokes. Any kind of trickery with kanji is very straightforward. The hard part about reading Asairo as an inexperienced reader is that shumon's sentences are kinda convoluted and sometimes he doesn't make certain things he's talking about obvious. If you don't have a good grasp on the context you'll not understand what's going on.

The problem is also that the game is really bad at making varied challenges. For example, there are aerial units. But you fight against that how often? 1%? 2%? Yet there are plenty of anti air abilities.
It just feels all so moot, once you realize that ranged is as good as it is. Especially the gattling feels like it's 3 times as powerful as it should be. That thing deals like 900 damage in a basic shield->gattling combo. Zero effort 900 damage. That takes care of over 90% in the main game.

I can see that the game allows a lot. I can also see that the game has a lot of things not working too well. (i.e. mines generally feel like they have their own minds for when they trigger and if they even damage) But I fail to see the reason for doing so, outside of maybe the survival mode in late stages. But that mode is also badly made for it, as you can't try out things freely in a given stage you struggle with. You can start further in than stage 1 later on, but still. The mode is made for this one generic setting you live and die with.
Haven't played Dive X yet, but that could really be a huge improvement, as that game actually has single challenge stages as far as I know. Maybe then I start to like the battle system more. Maybe. So far however, I vastly vastly prefer Material Brave, even though that obviously has its own flaws including rare situations where a battle is completely unwinnable when you play the wrong character at the wrong time.

Range weapons won't do much for you on v.hard, and anti-air skills are mostly there for the air combos, which, again, you'll need on v.hard. But on normal you obviously can get through with just gatling, that's the whole point of the low difficulties, you can play however you want there.

Very hard and very easy are actually the exact same in most of the game. As far as I've tested, AI doesn't change, so if you don't take any damage whatsoever from enemies, very hard does nothing different than just making the battle longer. There are battles where it matters, but the point is: It's not a lot of them. The difficulty in Baldr Sky Dive is entirely based around what you fight, and aside of a few enemies, most will not ever touch you, no matter how long the combat goes. I don't even dislike the way difficulties work, mind you. The other part is the issue. It's too powerful to just stay away and shoot.

This is why the survival mode works as it does as well. Difficulty settings don't affect it, and as you progress, more and more enemies are thrown at you. Eventually you'll get problems with your circles and ranged weapons there. But, once again the point is: Doing anything else feels not rewarding at all, as you really have only very little where it does actually become relevant.

Also, a little off topic, but fuck them for making the battle speed modifier a thing AFTER you are done with the game through survival mode. I felt like x2 is the way the game should've been from the get go.

There might be other ways to do this and i did not like installing some random chinese apk on my phone, but just registering via https://passport.baidu.com/v2/?reg&overseas=1 did not work for me.

With the baidu account the last step for me was using baidu-dl https://github.com/Kyle-Kyle/baidudl to get some decent speed while downloading (~900KB/s for me)

Now i should be able to download files from baidu until i need to recharge the sim card in 6 months.

Usually without a walkthrough unless I get really stuck and the system itself is unfun arbitrary flag hell, because like the other anon said they can spoil quite a bit. In worst cases even route titles themselves can be potential spoilers so depending on the layout of the website it can be hard to take precautions and just search for the part you're currently at. Sadly, not using a walkthrough can also bite you in the ass if the game doesn't have enforced route order or it's implemented shoddily and you accidentally end up into a route that should be left for later.

But really, we need more in-game hint systems for titles that actually expect the player to find stuff for themselves while dodging bad ends so the level of spoilers are tailored for the part the player is currently stuck at. Flowcharts are also really nice.

VN choices are usually garbage, so a walkthrough is better. The only exception to that is games like Kamaitachi no Yoru, where the idea behind the game is making choices and figuring things out yourself in the first place. The game's story is also just "this happens, now figure it out", making it not exactly a story game.

Sometimes it's fun to mess around in Key common routes as well, but it's still not really great. For example Little Busters. While there are a lot of choices and you CAN have fun, this will never work out in your favor. If you don't stalk a girl you want the route of, you are out. Which is so fucking dumb when you do have quite a few choices and stalking isn't particularly nice either. (sometimes it makes way more sense to just not follow them)


Honestly, the garbage choice systems in VNs is something that could really need some work. Even if it's just a bunch of not mattering joke choices, is it that hard to do something that's not just the equivalent of extremely obvious "+ affection" choices, where you have to be Mr. NiceGuy all the time? Way too often choices feel like there's no fun allowed. And if there's no fun allowed anyway, I'd like to at least get to see the routes I want without a hassle.

YU-NO in particular is great despite the save limitation since the required items for advancing always make some sort of sense, characters often hint at things going on that warrant exploration, the UI neatly warns about upcoming branching points and the flowchart both tells where you can roughly find the required main objectives and shows if there's an unexplored branch in the route you already played. It's gamey in a good way and also helps building up the feeling that everything's somehow connected.

Though simply having more choices isn't necessarily great either if it's some sort of retarded flag fuckery like Steins;Gate or Caucasus where you can't advance if you're missing certain arbitrary flags that have nothing to do with the plot at hand. Most developers are probably just lazy and consider it more economical to have the players experience all the intended content in one go using low number of branches, since they can't be arsed to design a good system where the choices and flags actually make sense instead of working on random moonlogic.

only Frontier and Ragnarok are connected but you can still read them out of order. The older games in the series have the problem that there's only one set of H scenes for the most part so while the protagonist breaks the girls by letting them get gangbanged by monsters, random prisoners, etc he can still be kind to them outside of the ero part and get good endings. The games where you can still get a lot of sex while completely avoiding any of that crap are Ragnarok, Hypno, Brave and Lagoon. Brave is extremely tame and you never go full villain even on Chaos Route until the end and even then the ones that get mindbroken are the female villains, not the heroines. I think the absolute best in the series are Hypno and Lagoon so maybe start with one of those.

If you can relate, you can get yourself into thinking you are the MC, under a different identity. It's self-insertion. You don't need to insert yourself into anything, when you actually have control over everything, including the name. Then it is literally your avatar. Obviously, MCs from Cation games are still characters, even with characteristics a lot of players won't have. (i.e. move to a different place without your family) You honestly need to do the exact same thing, just that the game makes it a little easier with the name for you. No real difference though.
