sentence cards are great for when your grasp on most grammar isn't very strong yet. once it is you should be able to replace sentence cards with just more reading and single vocab cards (or just dictionary usage if you're okay with the process).

Sure. It's the RTK method. I highly suggest you to learn at least one of the readings for each kanji. If you already know at least one Japanese word related to each kanji, like くるま, then you can associate 車 with くるま on its own, along with the 訓読み of しゃ in compound words like 自転車.

The VN core 1250 is full of vocabulary I'd already learnt while watching anime. The only advantage to VN core 1250 or 2000 is learning to associate familiar words with kanji.
It'd make more sense to learn the Jouyou kanji through RTK (along with at least one reading for each kanji) than it would be to have to drill in a bunch of words you already know.
As a matter of fact, learning the core2k/6k would make more sense if somebody wanted to get more unknown words.

I switched to vocab cards after my first 2k cards being mined sentences from anime. Matt and Yoga haven’t addressed 2 HUGE issues with sentence cards:
1. Too much context - When reviewing a sentence card like Yoga’s, (the same type I made) with sentence and image on the front, there is too much context. I can immediately tell you the target word’s reading and meaning from just looking at the image, or reading the first 2-3 words of the sentence. I don’t have to look at the target word itself at all. Sentence cards get you to think of a meaning/reading from seeing that particular sentence, not from seeing the word. This leads to a problem I noticed very quickly when trying to read. I’d not be able to read words that I have mature sentence cards for because when reviewing sentence cards you don’t have to look at the actual word and convert that alone into a meaning and reading. You don’t have to look at the kanji themselves, recognize them, and remember a meaning/reading, which is what you need to read them in practice.
2. Review Length bottleneck - You need a lot of words to get good so you can’t have your anki reviews take 10-20 seconds like is common for sentence cards if you’re listening to the audio or reading the definition. Sentence cards take so much longer than a single word vocab card which you can do in under 5s easily allowing for hundreds of reviews per day in under an hour.

That’s not how it works. When the card comes up and I see the image in my peripheral vision or recognize the sentence itself I immediately know the target word meaning without even having a chance to do anything, it’s almost instant. When reading the sentence I always recognize it before I reach the target word. Once I find the target word to focus on it it’s already too late.

No. It's fine to read public domain translations of them in English. As a matter of fact, you could probably get a quick summary of the main philosophical concepts explored by Nietzsche (amor fati, master-slave morality, truth) and Wittgenstein (language as the form of thought) just by reading a pair of articles on them in the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy. There's no need to really learn German or Japanese to understand Nietzsche or Wittgenstein to understand 素晴らしき日々. Let's say you're doing vocab cards and you have the following:
食べる = to eat
飲む = to drink
スープ = soup

Now, if you were to only remember *just* vocab words, you might think you would say "I eat soup". However, you'd be wrong. The correct thing to say is スープを飲む simply because that is how Japanese people talk and saying anything else would sound as funny as saying "I drink soup" in English.

Now at this point you might be saying "Yeah but that's so obvious and I'll just learn that from reading/watching media!" True, but this was just one example. There are almost infinite combinations of how words ought to be used together in Japanese. By putting sentences in your Anki cards, you're building up a huge knowledge base of how Japanese people actually use words together correctly.

I'm really not sure what to suggest then. I remember having the problem you're having right now with Yomichan at some point, but I can't for the life of me remember what was causing it. I have a feeling it turned out to be something really stupid and seemingly insignificant that I'd overlooked though.

I think you making that new deck must have something to do with it though. The timing would be too big of a coincidence otherwise.

On the whole, I like it a lot more than Yomichan, though I guess that goes without saying since I wouldn't be using it otherwise. Yomichan made a lot of changes to the original Rikaisama design, and I thought all of them were for the worse. Nazeka is a lot like Rikaisama used to be, minus a few features.

It's visually a lot nicer, it works faster, it's more customizable, it has a built in reader page so you don't need that clipboard inserter add-on + blank autoscrolling HTML pages when texthooking VNs, and it isn't effected by the causative and passive deconjugation bugs that Yomichan and some of the other Rikai-clones suffer from. I prefer its mining support to Yomichan's as well since Yomichan's card templates are hideous (one of the many reasons I was eager to find an alternative).

The only notable downside to it right now is the still rather immature EPWING support. You can add EPWING dictionaries (search "nazeka epwing" in the archive and you'll find a mega link with them), but only one at a time, and there's currently no way to delete an EPWING dictionary once you add it - all you can do is replace it with a different one. According to the github page for Nazeka, options to delete and manage EPWING dictionaries are in the works, but as for when they'll be implemented I have no idea.

The problem for me before was that there was an issue with my card layout. I think I changed one of the field names or something which resulted in the front of my cards being blank. As a result, Anki refused to let me make cards for that deck. I discovered the problem when I tried to make a card manually.

I'm not sure that this will be your problem as well, but even if it isn't, try making a card for your deck manually and see if some sort of error pops up. Might be that you've made a careless mistake like I did and overlooked it.

Also on the same thought, make sure you didn't do any of the following:
- rename your deck
- rename your note type
- change your note type
- rename your fields
- remove your fields

Itazuraneko is pretty outdated. The updates to the guide, etc. were largely contributed via the live Google Docs versions of the various pages, but the owner of those (who also served as the owner of the https://djtguide.neocities.org/ site) got tired of maintaining them and disappeared somewhere. This was back in mid-late 2017, so the guide, resources page and so on have been pretty much static ever since then. The Itazuraneko maintainer spends 99% of his time just pointlessly fucking around with the visual design of the site, and the feedback page is on some ghetto third-party website so nobody uses it.

Nazeka isn't that new I don't think, but it was very bare-bones until fairly recently when it got a load of updates adding features and generally improving the way it works. It's now very usable and, at least from my perspective, serves as a superior alternative to everything else out there (though it still could use some polish in places).

After finishing full written RTK in august I have no idea if it helped me or not. Occasionally I'll still see a new kanji I don't know a word for and remember/visualize my story and it helps a little bit. It's really hard to tell if it's useful or not though.

I have a problem with my core deck. I was pretty far in into a previous version and decided to switch to 12k (probably not the best life choice I've ever made). The new 12k deck doesn't seem to show new cards by its index number so the words show up in as far as I can tell random order. Trying qolobri to go monolingual just like our god and savior Matt says. It's absolute trash so far. A lot of these dictionaries have no formatting whatsoever and so are literally just walls of text with no whitespace at all. It's also really apparent that all the dictionary files are like 25+ years old. A lot of words I've searched up that I know the meaning for either don't have the meaning that I know them for or the word doesn't even show up all. Okay, set it up. I had to mess with it a bit since I'm running qolibri through Wine and the font rendering can be a bit fucky.

Changed the font to HanaMinA (Hanazono) since I don't have yours and that seemed to render better than Noto CJK. Had to change the dictionary name text to white though because bold wasn't working with black for reasons I can't even begin to imagine.

I also changed the colour you use for links since it's a bit hard to read on that dark background.

By the way, while we're talking about dictionaries, I've always wondered - what is that katakana gibberish you get next to the readings sometimes? What the fuck is エウリヤウ supposed to mean?

You see not so long ago I was incredibly upset with Jamal and accused him of single handedly ruining the thread. I was trying to get him to prove he knows Japanese which he refused to do and that made me even more angry but really what does it matter. My desire for this thread to be populated by more advanced learners and that we should post in a way as to attract more of them into this thread was nonsensical in the first place, all Japanese learning communities are overwhelmingly populated by beginners and why should this place be an exception. I suppose with challenging everyone to shitpost I just showed what everyone knew already, that nobody here really knows Japanese. So my anger at Jamal was misdirected. He merely was the most recognizable poster and I wanted a scapegoat.

He really isn't nearly the worst of what this thread offers anyway, a title I have come to covet in the last few days. There is those spreading fake information about me by replicating my posting style, those vile people that accuse me of lying and cheating and people who come to molest me. Jamal hasn't done anything like that, sure he posts as Quizmaster but you can tell it's him by his posting style and his posts are never really aiming to hurt anyone. The nonsensical advice he gives is clearly recognizable as such (10k hours of english anime) and I'm impressed he managed to keep his character up for so long. He even accepted the ass bet which I have to say deserves some respect.

And by now it's obvious he isn't going anywhere. Countless people have told him to get out but he sticks around and by now the thread would be unrecognizable without his influence, whether it ultimately is good or bad. So in a way I've grown a bit jealous of him.

Let's just take it easy and do our best to shitpost. (I'll still challenge people who talk shit to quiz though.)

But if it has multiple readinds or meanings and relies on context figure it out then of course you need to add context.

I will never understand 先 when it's used as a suffix. It translates to 'place' but the literal meaning is "the place where you go to". So stuff like 潜伏先 literally turns into "the hideout place where you go to"
