Do you replay games in another language? I like seeing how they translate as well as how streamers react to certain things.

I noticed I've been thinking too much of most japanese writers when the translation to English isn't that amazing, despite being being similar sentences.
Either that or that japanese equivalence of English words are more impactful.

Also on a side note, for the pic related all the streamers I've seen don't understand it at all.

Alrighty then. As much as I like Yakata settings like this, something is lacking. And by that I don't mean furigana nobody will be able to read nowadays because they are SMALL. They are also used a bit much, which makes me question all the fancy kanji it uses.

It feels too normal for a good amount of time and then too random afterwards. Characters are put on a bus and events generally don't flow very well. The writing tries to be all fancy, but that's not really helping those parts. Or at all, really. It feels like you could scrap half the lines and actually make things flow instead. Sure, it's probably deliberate in some ways, but it still feels hella weird. Though, to be fair, this isn't too weird for a game from 2004, and I can certainly see the appeal. It just feels very rough in some ways.

i suggest you try translating something yourself, whether a small doujin or a full game, you'll soon see how often you're stuck choosing between 2 bad translations and maybe gain more appreciation for the original jp

I do do some small translations, I guess it became more apparent when I read English to Japanese.

Time for chuuni.

It is very red. Quite early a common word was replaced by something that's probably supposed to sound cooler already. (furigana style) The protag has quite an edgy (and red) name. Male friend already offered a kiss and there was talk about them being "like that" 2 minutes after the first scene with him began, aka gay elements.

I'm trying to remember a VN that I think was pretty recent, wondering if anyone knows it. Searching through vndb with what I know didn't work so either I'm forgetting something or the entry is probably not tagged perfectly. Anyway it had at least two heroines. One's your older sister, black haired(?) and she's like secretly a brocon probably? Another was an oni or something, some sort of mystical creature.

Finished Sumi's route in Monobeno. It didn't feel very long, and their romance felt a bit rushed, but (or maybe because of those things) it was enjoyable. The story being broken up into chapters you can navigate through is nice too.

Pretty hyped for Natsuha's route. It looks like I have to read through Alice's first though?

Finished playing KGNE(the original edition) Haruka route. This is the first long VN I have read. Though I skipped some in 2nd part, mostly Sky Temple scenes and don't feel like doing other routes. First, I'd say that VNDB description is spoilery for the first part.

Liked how natural everything was(esp compared to today's moe shit). The first half was a great, felt immersive and had the 'eroge feel' that's in classic eroge I guess. Till that part I felt I would enjoy it more than ML/A. The second half was a bit too long for me. I guess spending 1.5x to 2x time to read is also to blame, Anyways I binged and wanted to get to the end. Surprised I couldn't find much discussion of this eroge..

Does Mitsuki commit suicide in the end of Haruka route? Seemed to be so but there's that CG of them all together in the credits. I ended up jumping to Mitsuki route(didn't want to play it rejecting Haruka) thinking CGs in there but that route seemed to have a sadder conclusion.

One thing I felt was in an utsuge I don't want a main heroin breaking to be the cause of utsu, external factors or even hetara protag are fine. I felt that way when I came to the ending of Mitsuki route.

Like actually every heroine was better than alice in all aspects and Konron was god tier but no, I have to see all the heroines be rejected for that bland character without anything noteworthy, like it was the same for hatsuyuki sakura, the side characters(Yoru specially) were good but the main heroine was bs, wtf with the mania of fcking up the main heroines of that author.
But w/e I just needed to complain and let out all the tilt that this game gave me, god.

Well. Apparently the Animebytes copy of セヴンデイズ has a bug that locks you out of the final chapter that was patched on release day but is only available through a steam update for a legitimate copy, or something to that effect. At least grabbing a savefile opens it up for reading.
Game's real hit and miss so far. If the heroine of the particular chapter strikes your fancy it'll really tear at you, but if you don't really care for her it becomes a real chore. I almost feel lied to because I really liked Sakura's chapter (the first one past the prologue) but the chapters getting shorter and arguably lazier as they went on, so I really ended up only liking Sakura's and Shizuku's chapters. Here's hoping the finale doesn't disappoint.

What is the cutest game you've played? In terms of not just characters, but also situations and overall tone of the game. I feel like a lot of games that seem cute have a lot of lucky sukebe moments and perverted MC which kind of ruins the innocent cute feeling of everything. For me it's probably Nanatsuiro Drops, nothing can match how cute and pure-hearted that game is.

Yeah, eroge is pretty much about defiling and degrading the pure after all. But what other choice do you have if you like cute things? Anime and manga don't go in enough detail, light novels are not a good medium for it with both the lack of visuals and audio. Pretty much eroge is the only thing you can turn to if you want something with more detailed relationships and character interactions.

Finished the main(?) route of Bloody Rondo. Let's just say: maybe next time.

The characters are pretty much fine. Nothing really great, nothing really bad. Just some introductions are terrible. For example I'm not sure why a heroine gets introduced with her scheming and deceiving the protag and then she gets the role as the "no brain, only brawns=guns" idiot girl. I guess it was supposed to be a cool introduction? (not like that worked)
The plot and such do feature some interesting themes. Unfortunately, most gets thrown into the room and then that's that. The game really lacked a good structure and some better focus on the mattering things. Instead it wastes its time with random slice of life and shitty battles.
Speaking of shitty battles. They are shitty. You always know who wins. The enemy has no buildup so it's just "the bad guy". All the bigger battles that don't end after 2 minutes do end with deus ex machina eventually. Often you know exactly how, so all the time up until then it's pointless "getting beaten up". Sure, to an extend some of this is normal in chuuni, but there are enough chuuni works that do this better. Less predictable outcome, deus ex machina being used in a back and forth way and not necessarily giving you victory and so on.
Then there's the climax. Well. Yeah. It's as you'd expect. You get the "background" and "reasons" for the final boss dumped right before the fight and it's generally extremely predictable and not exactly good. If a character already lampshades a certain way too often happening thing before and they pull this straight in the climax AGAIN, you know it's really not good.

Could've been pretty good. I really liked some of the themes thrown around. But they ultimately don't get discussed. The relationship with Luna was weird and just jumping around too. For all that Luna supposedly went through, the common route and her general behavior make little sense. There's also this supposedly super important scene with her and the MC which however only lasted 30 seconds and feels like nothing special. Until you realize that it's getting brought up an awful lot. But. In theory Luna's background story and such were nice. It just wasn't really executed. Yes, not executed. I feel like "badly executed" wouldn't even be right here. Same goes for her crazy loli and generally all major enemies. A shame.
So yeah, maybe next time. Unless you like Aoba Ringo a lot, you can probably read Fortissimo and get away way better than with reading this. Though she's in Fortissimo as well, of course. Awfully similar themes here and there.

I love Giga. They make their newest titty moe game. So they decided that all the side characters are, you know, not that titty. (pic related) Because otherwise people would want to them as heroines. Unfortunately, these side characters are all more likable than most of the heroines (most of them are sleeping pills... probably deliberately given the game's theme?) and have better designs. Which may have to do with the typical "let's attach super big boobs at the girls without designing them for that" approach.

Oh Giga. But at least you have your preorder DLC stuff in full force, so you have to buy the game at 4 different specific shops, if you want to get the whole thing. Doubt those are extras, given the amount of CG in the CG menu. (and assuming the DLC events register there as well)

Some games only output garbage if you don't have a "full" Japanese locale and everything. Thus ntleas to help you out there. And some seem to just render text a bit weirdly.

I didn't have this kind of issue with the BGI engine yet, but they probably changed some things around. Regardless, it's easily fixable, so it's not a big problem.

If you haven't already read Rance: Hikari o Motomete and Rance II, don't read III. Rance 02 is a perfect remake of Rance II, just with better art and is an excellent choice. Rance 01 changes almost everything and I wouldn't recommend it. Rance 03 really changes fucking everything. For one, the battle system is revamped so heavily that it's a whole different genre. It also deeply changes or entirely removes some of the story, among which are the two scenes which blew me away the first time I played and define the game and the whole Rance series in my eyes. I double triple don't recommend Rance 03.
Rance III is defined by its massive improvement in the battles over the first game and increasing the quality of the storytelling on all fronts. It's easily the best of the pre-Kichikuou Alicesoft games. While the story isn't as good as really good VNs and the gameplay isn't as good as really good RPGs, I'd say it's better than any Final Fantasy game I've played in terms of both gameplay and story.

Important to note is that Alicesoft released Rance III as freeware on this site:

You can download any version from there, but you should be warned that the Windows version of the game has a bug; Alicesoft forgot to program in a max speed for map movement, assuming that the limitations of the PC would be enough to slow it down. Well, that version came out in 1997, and now the map moves too fast to use. This only really matters in one dungeon and when you get there you can make your own map with grid paper, so it's not really a big deal.
Another thing to consider is that the Rance series is a rather hard read for gaijin because it mixes lots of archaic and military terminology with '90s slang. Go into it expecting a challenge.
Good luck, and enjoy it- the series takes a bit of a dive after this, and doesn't pick itself up again until Kichikuou and Rance 5D.

Finally getting around to playing 遊郭に売られた俺の彼女, but after reaching about a quarter (I'm guessing) through the NTR part of the story I've noticed the game seems to be skipping all the heroine's POV ero scenes except the first, and they're not in the scene replay area or anything like that, plus I can't see any mention on nip forums about this being one of those shitty games that makes you finish the whole fucking thing in the guy's POV before letting you see the rest, (in fact it hops between different character's POV's constantly, including the heroine's, which would make skipping just her ero scenes weird).

Before I continue it could anyone confirm if I've bugged my installation or not/if the scenes come far later/timeskip for some reason?

And given that this game is kinda about the not so human beings, while the sister is supposed to be human, there's even more reason to assume that things may not be as it seems. Yeah ok. In that case it should have JP language available or it's wrong information that has to be fixed. Checked Mori Dreamers, which was also released by this publisher, and it has no JP text and interface on the information, so it could really be that Monobeno can be played in JP. This stuff can be changed in the game settings on steam itself, as someone else already wrote. This has a default setting (probably English for you) which however won't work if doesn't exist. Then it defaults to whatever the game's default language is.

I actually just assumed this was shit out by that one publisher who recently did the same thing for a lot of games with crappy machine translations attached. I don't think any of those had the original language as they were (and still are) dirt cheap.

Such a controversial relationship will only bring ruin to everyone involved, it only works on nukige, and despite the H scene count, this VN is not one.
I really wish Toneworks work less on the H scenes and more to important stuff like side character's sprites and more non-H important scenes, like when Mizuha has to be hospitalized because of her injury. What they've done with normal sprites is fine, but I would rather have more diabetes inducing scenes with its own CG rather than bloated amount of H-CGs. There are so few of non-H CGs depicting heartwarming/funny moments despite the routes are much longer than other VN.

Stumbled over this game and read (on EGS I think) that Karen's route should be quite good. Turns out, that's true. If you like something a little different from your usual absolute pure love thing, but still being fairly vanilla and "pure".

The game's premise is kinda nukige-ish, vndb even calls it one, but for this route at least it's mostly just a method to lead to sexual contact without being a couple. I personally think that's quite interesting as nowadays there aren't a ton of people who consider sex the holy grail you can only have if you have a girlfriend/boyfriend. Some certainly do, some may even still think it's bad before marriage, but hey. Times change.
Regardless, that leads to the relationship to grow in a rather different way than what you normally get. I also liked that the characters were actually quite compatible here, which is surprisingly rare. Unfortunately, while the part leading up to the "relationship" is pretty solid, once that's established you only get 3 h-scenes and that's it. The scenes aren't so good if you look at the game as a nukige (which I feel it isn't anyway) either, as the writer focused quite a bit on the surrounding stuff. While that's at part amusing and often even builds the characters, it's not useful for the ero in itself. Makes the whole stuff much more believable though. Until it gets into the "ahn" part which feels like it's copied from some eroscene pattern book where only the names have to be filled into the rest.

So I quite enjoyed this. If it had a little more time to work with the relationship, it could've been REALLY good in my opinion. The ending was really sudden.

It's essentially a pure love story that wouldn't fit into a moege, as the heroine is popular, tried going out with other guys and was at least interested in joining a club which is about just having casually sex and seeking pleasure. For actual reasons, as the theme is kinda about "keeping up appearances in society".
That said, there's no immediate sex, at least with this girl. It starts pretty harmless and it takes a while to go all the way. She also doesn't already like the protag, nor is it the other way around. That takes some time. Which makes the relationship simply a bit different from the norm. You obviously wonder why she does what she does. Don't really know her too well. How much distance is the best? And so on.

The actual "fuck and then realize it was love all along" is probably more the childhood friend route. At least to a certain point. Haven't read it though, and will probably not bother with it either. Seems less interesting to me, although maybe the club gets a little more meaning here.

I liked the common route of this, but the character routes really weren't good.

The doggy route started okay with the conflict of her being a dog and considering the protag her master and that just being the typical master animal thingy. Which is a bad thing if you want her to be a normal girl and view herself as such. This was however just thrown out of the window with some convenience to the point it hurt. The plot also didn't make sense. So you got your setup of these "old" and pure animal people being worshiped in that town, yet the story goes the exact opposite direction? No idea what happened here. And I don't think I want to know.
The sister route I essentially dropped when they became a couple and literally nobody ever said anything about them being siblings. What's the point of a sister route if nobody cares about her being the sister? You can call her blood related all you want, that's completely defeating the purpose here.

Oh well. Not like I didn't expect this. Although I kinda had a little more hope after a not at all bad common route.

You've never been so attached to somebody that they were irreplaceable? With your parents or whatever, there's never going to be anyone who comes in to replace them in that role, but with new girlfriends, that's basically what's going on. It's one thing if you never really clicked romantically, but if she's truly become a member of your family (not just in terms of social conventions, words, or even legal contracts, but emotionally), you can't just swap her out and swap in the new girl. Making light of relationships speaks less to your ample wisdom and more to just how sad your life has been, and perhaps an inability to bond with other people.

Sora's face had become the face of family, and Kou is really having trouble moving on, even as he plays at it. Time will heal wounds, but we're talking years of accepting things of as they are and getting on with your life (which he definitely hadn't, clearly), and during the healing process is absolutely the wrong time to start hunting for a new girlfriend. Maybe "ever" wasn't the right word, but he's certainly not ready for it at the point in time where the story takes place.

In some routes Kou goes mostly on his own with one of the heroines, without joining a particular organization. In first two routes GOAT are shown to be pretty much outright villainous considering the length they're willing to go to achieve their goals, but Kou joins them in Chinatsu's route, and even if it eventually still treats GOAT as being wrong shows they have an actual logical reason behind their heavy anti-AI stance. On the subsequent routes Kou joins up with Fenrir and Ark Industries, latter of which was also of questionable trust in previous routes. There were exceptions of course: Gregory and Gilbert in particular, or the professor's madness (which also kind of received a silly explanation later on), though the last one's original motivation for his research also had a sensible goal. I also thought the school flashback stuff didn't get too much in the way, before Dive 2 at least. On the contrary since Kou loses his memory in the beginning it's fun to see the characters and the world's changes between the school and present parts, and Kou's growth as a character since he retains more of his memory with each subsequent route.

For the record I disliked the final route of Dive 2 quite a lot as well, specifically the replacing of all the semi-interesting conflicts and politics with a JRPG-like complete non-character main villain who makes everyone else join forces together. Other bullshit was killing off all the characters for drama points then conveniently resurrecting them (except all the bad guys for good measure) for an extra sappy happy ending for that and every other world, because apparently every timeline needs to be fucking perfect. The first routes did also have some bullshit moments, though at that point I wasn't as bothered yet because I was expecting a more interesting explanation later on, and the endings often had certain main characters dead despite ending on an overall happier note. Again, the true route fucks shit up by going out of its way to make the earlier endings even sappier as well.

Also let me go out of my way to say Sora too felt kind of forced, though I didn't dislike her as a character per se. The earlier routes' flashbacks didn't really explore how she and Kou ended up together in the first place, and considering how hard the game seemed to push Chinatsu I was wishing for there to be some pretty fucking good explanation for Kou to choose Sora. Then the explanation in Dive 2 ended up being "oh no, our Simulcra are affecting own emotions off screen this is bad no wait this is actually great, guess we're a couple now and fuck Chinatsu lol". Didn't feel exactly compelling despite the game pushing the connection between Simulcra and the people their based on, and Kou's interaction with Kuu.

Overall I consider Dive 1 pretty fantastic, whereas in Dive 2 my enjoyment was greatly affected by the increasing feeling of repetition even without the flashback re-dump and I thought it didn't really deliver interesting payoff for the stuff Dive 1 set up.

Nah, never so far so I guess you can just disregard me with "You've never loved so you wouldn't understand." I pride in trying to be rational as much as I can, so that's that too. Getting drunk in emotions will just mess you up. I guess I would grieve, but not to the extent of how you make Kou to be grieving.

I don't buy that. He's known her for less than a year(well, disregarding the simulacra stuff). These were just "first love" emotions amplified via howling, otherwise Chinatsu could've easily won. Even though Kou is hot-blooded, with revenge complete, he doesn't need to feel them anymore. I guess light regret and guilt for failing to protect will remain but not for long as he has a family to protect you know.

So he loses his cool when reminded of the tragedy? Wow, really? Never would've thought. Of course gouging old wounds makes them hurt. But that doesn't mean it will continue without the stimuli.
