I just finished Hinamizawa Bus Stop. Thanks to the anon that posted the download link in the last thread.

It was surprisingly good. Definitely the weirdest thing I've read from Ryukishi07. All the characters were interesting and memorable, especially lesbian Mion. I loved the atmosphere and all the differences from the regular Higurashi.

The translation is half decent 80% of the time, but it's full of broken English. It's never confusing, just awkward. Who the hell translated this and why didn't they proofread it?

I wonder if the other two stories are translated like this. They seem to be more serious and I would hate to have the experience ruined by constant grammar errors or even nonsensical lines.

Sounds too good to be true. I bet they'll fuck it up somehow. Didn't they STILL have problems licensing the music and had to replace tracks again? What about the sound effects? Are they the original ones, or the annoying ones from the old Mangagamer releases?

I’m actually pretty dissatisfied with the retranslation as a whole. While I wouldn’t say it’s bad and it’s probably better than the original TL (it’s been far too long so I can’t remember what it was like reading that one), it feels to me like something that’s just barely makes the mark, rather than something worthy of being known as a “new and improved translation”. The amount of typos is particularly telling. While Meakashi wasn’t as bad as Watanagashi in this regard they still occur at a significantly higher frequency than any other MangaGamer title I’ve read. And given that Higurashi is both kinetic and short (per chapter relative to other VNs), this is a pretty disappointing reflection of the QC team. As for the actual text, I don’t know Japanese so I can’t compare them side by side, but I’ve encountered quite a number of sentences that would have felt more natural with a change in their structure/word order, something that should definitely have been picked up by the editor. For me at least, these issues were enough to make me pause and break immersion.

The tone is generally lighthearted, but some scenes are very haunting. Shit gets surprisingly dark towards the end. I don't want to spoil it, but damn.

The main characters are literally Battler, George and Maria. Even their personalities are basically the same. I loved this movie as a kid, but now that I cannot unsee the Umineko similarities I love it even more.

There is no Jessica, though.

I agree. Tomitake is genuinely humble, while George tries way too hard to be a "nice guy" even though he's still a jealous piece of shit. I still think George is very similar to Tomitake, though.

Tomitake is boring. His muscles came from the fact that he was in the army in the most isolated position, sniping, and when he had an eye accident, he became completely worthless. His only hobby is to take pictures of birds and he is barely interesting in his job with Tokyo. He is only a liason with a fruitless research station that ends up being shut down.
He tricks a woman who only worked her whole life and falls in love with his hobby of photography because she has nothing else going for her in her life.

I still find it extremely weird that Ryukishi finds Tomitake to be his favorite character. Or maybe he's proud that he created such a boring character without just making him bland.

I mean, Jesus Christ, come on George.

Whenever George's glasses fog, he shows his true self. It was just by accident that I noticed it and decided to check what he said whenever his glasses fog up. Most of the time, it's just embarrassing things, but more often than not, he's a passive aggressive asshole.

I just finished re-reading Saikoroshi-hen. Did Rika eventually forget all the horrible shit she went through, as if it was a dream? Does that mean she became a normal person again?

There is a scene at the very end after everyone leaves the hospital room. Hanyuu tells Rika to go to sleep and says that when she wakes up she will remember nothing. Is she referring to the whole "killing her own mother" thing or is she referring to the Bernkastel personality itself?

Umineko is a novel. You are not supposed to be looking at the pretty sprites. The originals are expressive and improve the experience, but they never distract you from the narration or prevent you from imagining the scene yourself. That's where the PS3 sprites and backgrounds fail and feel awkward.

The voice acting is great, but I still think the experience is better, more dinamic and less cringy if you imagine the voices in your head. There is nothing more awkward than having a super fast battle slowed down by voice acting. Or accidentally clicking and interrupting the voice acting. Or having the music loop 5 times in a row because the voice acting made the scene take way longer than it should.

The original novel doesn't have any of those problems and the whole aesthetic is much more charming and interesting to look at. The updated sprites and backgrounds look nice, but they feel sterile, boring and artificial compared to the originals. I'm not saying they are shit, but I think they are worse.

Also, Ryukishi often uses vague facial expressions that convey different emotions depending on the context. Only the original sprites do this well. The updated versions lose that subtlety and look awkward at times. It's very noticeable in Higurashi.

There's something about Ryukishi's deformed sprites and the blurred real life backgrounds that make his novels feel even more immersive. It's like your mind just accepts that bizarre-looking world and gets lost in it more easily.

It's also a very unique art style that stands out and makes you feel happy when you see it. The PS2 artwork is much more generic. And the backgrounds are awesome. Since they are photographs, they feel very realistic, but the blurring gives them a surreal vibe that matches perfectly with the character models and the story itself. It makes them feel separated somehow, so you never find a scene ridiculous because of the perspective.

This is very apparent in Higanbana. It just wouldn't be the same with generic anime designs and sterile drawn backgrounds.

Some other examples would be the phone and the super detailed 3D chain in Umineko. Or the super detailed ash tray in Higurashi. They feel extremely genetic somehow, there's nothing unique about them. But since they are so detailed, you can't help but notice that Rosa's phone is the same as the one in the mansion, and the same as every other phone that appears in the story. Even the generic picture of a plant that sits next to the phone is the same every time a phone appears. It's obvious that it's just a recycled background and it just takes you out of the story. It looks silly.

In the original novels, you can see the backgrounds but you can't really see any details. Things like phones or ash trays don't stand out so much, it's not as immediately obvious that this phone is exactly the same as the one you saw in a completely different location. It's blurry, you just know that it's a phone and nothing more. It simply conveys the idea of a phone. Same with Hinamizawa and Rokkenjima. The detailed drawn backgrounds in the re-releases make these places feel less realistic and give us too much detail, leaving no room for the imagination. The image is too clean and you can easily see how boring and empty everything looks. And the perspectives look strange sometimes because there isn't a separation between the realistic backgrounds and cartoony sprites. The PS3 version lacks that separation and makes it harder to use your imagination. The sprites look like they belong in that world and the whole perspective makes everything look off.

The blurry photographs are more artistic, even if they didn't take too much effort to create. They are just very interesting to look at. There is more to art than technical detail, don't be a dumb goat. The whole experience is better and more cohesive without any patches.

Oh, and the CGs make some scenes feel really cheesy and "tryhard". Some even look ridiculous and over the top. Not a fan.

I'm not saying that nobody should be allowed to like the updated versions. I don't give a shit about what people like or dislike. I just think it's a shame that new players will have a slightly worse experience when they could have just played the original. You can't deny that some parts have problems, sound cringy, take too long or just look awkward. Take a look at Narnith's EP1-4 videos. The game looks awkward as shit in general and I can't help but cringe the whole time. That could have been avoided.

>> No.17982338

>>17982240
Hmmm, afraid I feel differently then you, but that's fine. I won't try to 'convince' you of my opinion, but since you went into such detail about your perspective, I'll go ahead and write a little bit.

I 'found' Higurashi and Umineko about...4 years ago? I took rather long breaks between some of the parts, due to interest in other things and honestly, boredom. Some parts were a chore to get through.

I played both the first 3 arcs of Higurashi and 4 arcs of Umineko with the old sprites, and then for answer arcs switched to the new sprites. I did this because, when reading up about how/where to find the games, everyone wrote a lot on how better the original sprites were, so I wanted to see what the big deal was about. I vastly prefer the new sprites and backgrounds.

Some of the old characters are indeed very charming (Rena stuck out to me as far cuter and more expressive) in their original art, but too many characters were too lumpy and doughy for my taste. The backgrounds, because they were blurred, never got a second glance from me. Every outside scene in my mind took place in a vague forest location, as all my brain really registered was 'greenbrown shrubs', and every inside scene was 'a room'. What room were they in? No clue, just 'a room somewhere in the mansion'. The newer backgrounds, while drawn from the wonkiest of perspectives, at least have enough detail for me to separate the dining hall from the lounge from a bedroom.

Also I loved the voices too much to not use them for the rest of the answer arcs. Aside from the emotion they conveyed, they forced me to slow down in my reading, and I actually picked up more of the details that way.

Didn't mean to write so much, I hate long posts.

I'm more bothered by people believing that Kinzo caused the massacre because he wanted to steal the Italian gold.

First of all, Will's authority allowed him to experience Kinzo's memories directly. That's what that power does and we see it multiple times in EP6, EP7, EP8 and even Higurashi. Unless Kinzo was somehow completely brainwashed and delusional to a ridiculous degree, he wouldn't be able to have fake memories of the events. His story was the truth as he remembers it.

The scenes that appear when Bern forces "the truth" out of Beato's guts are not meant to be real truth. Those scenes are the "truth" for Beato. That's why she claimed in EP3 that Kinzo had forced the first Beatrice to be his waifu until she ended up killing herself. It's not true, but that's what Beato believes.

Yasu can't possibly know what really happened in Kinzo's past, so that scene is not meant to be some sort of revelation. That scene reveals her motivations and her beliefs. She simply jumped to conclusions when she found all the skeletons and Genji didn't know the real truth either.

You could argue that it's left to the reader's interpretation, even though I don't think that's the case. But a lot of people seem to treat it as a FACT revealed by the game.

Yasu wants to kill himself and take the entire family down with him while putting up a magical show for Maria. All the complicated closed rooms and the letter challenging them to solve the epitaph are a way to give the family a chance to catch the criminal or stop the ceremony.

If Yasu kills himself without doing any of this crap, certain people will be heartbroken. That's why she got the whole family involved in this crap and made sure that nobody could survive. Also, there is no going back after the first twilight. Once you kill six people, you can only die or deal with the consequences if caught. It's a good way to gather enough courage to end your life.

For some reason, while I read it I actually believed that Oyashiro-sama was real, the curses were real and creepy Tomitake was some kind of ghost sent by Oyashiro-sama. His grey, smoke-like color didn't help. And then I totally believed all that stuff about him being the murderer.
I don't know how I got tricked like that after reading Higurashi. Maybe I didn't expect the story to be so complex and thought it would be pure fantasy.

I love how many elements from Higurashi appear in the story. People hallucinating creepy stuff, the fake murder case being an excuse to isolate the village, a Mion lookalike making it seem like she ran away to Tokyo so they could "demon away" the real Mion (it's basically Satoshi's story), the idea of someone being kidnapped and experimented on, scientists artificially prolonging the research so they can make biological weapons, the theme of betrayal (Lesbian Mion thinks she made a good friend but it was all an act and she was being set up to be kidnapped, just like how Keiichi came to that conclusion in Onikakushi). It's really cool how everything is there.

I think the biggest difference is the disease itself. The brain parasites are literal ants observable with a microscope, people can go insane much more quickly, the hallucinations are more aggressive and separated from reality, you can become L5 in a matter of minutes, Rika's influence is so strong that her going to the bathroom for a while is enough to trigger headaches and paranoia, and the "queen" parasite slowly kills the host if she has a weak body but can be transplanted to a different person.
Also, Hinamizawa apparently has 10000 residents and is big enough that they need to take the bus.

Some idiot will read the spoilers anyway, but I strongly recommend not doing so.

Well, it definitely can't be as popular, given how much of Fate/ runs on waifu/husbando nonsense and how little Umineko has in the form of them (literally everyone named is married or a minor character). It also doesn't have the 'cooler' aspects of F/

It would definitely attract the lit fags (i.e. me) and those looking for gore + murder mystery stuff. Although I bet most won't really try guessing the mystery.

The magic battles aren't really that impressive, unless you count EP8. But again, arguably Umineko is less about the mental and physical combat and more about the psychoanalysis of the Ushiromiyas and the deconstruction of Fantasy/Mystery tropes.

TL;DR Its niche, so its unlikely to be 'mainstream', but there's something for everyone and it lacks some of the stench of F/, which makes it more attractive than niche.

Disgusting guys.
It has been ages since I watched it so I sadly can't go in detail anymore but just to pick out an example here.
They completely ruined the big reveal in episode 7 by bringing that pre episode at the start of the season (which wasnt even necessary or in the novel) used greatly less impactful music at the crucial parts and rushed the death of Keiichi. The entire part had almost no impact I felt.
Same goes for one of my favorite parts where takano explains herself to her shocked underlings (see picture) while moon is playing in the background.

I mean I can accept your opinion, while I am a bit shocked I hope you can see my point at least? It's these little things that they left out which they could have adapted in 40 something episodes which ruined it for me.
Not to speak of the other chapters they were even less memorable to me.

For the killer lolis, of course. It's a lot of people's first exposure to an anime with that level of insanity and violence, and it's continually mentioned over the years which introduces more people to it.
I'm probably wrong in a lot of ways, but this is how I've always seen it: a decade ago, as anime was getting more popular and the internet saw more use, more young teens and preteens were starting to look for it and watch it online. Their previous exposure was just the stuff shown on television, (poorly) dubbed and often censored. To discover that there's anime that's dark, violent, and uncensored at such an age is exciting and feels more "adult" and less like "for kids". The quality isn't as important as the content itself to them, just look back at the type of garbage you probably tolerated and even enjoyed. Higurashi's anime has that stuff covered, and glorifies it more than the visual novel, which is part of it's success and appeal.
For what it is, I think it's decent, and as long as it gets people to also read the visual novel and then read Umineko, I'm fine with it.

Umineko's anime spoiled the Question Arc for me when I watched it, but I still read and enjoyed the depth the novel had when I finally got around to reading the whole thing. Not everyone wants to read a novel if they would rather watch anime. But plenty of people have still read the novel after watching it and even admitted that it felt like an entirely different experience and enjoyed Higurashi even more. It still works for promoting the series, and if people love it enough to watch the anime, then they're likely to love the sound novel even more.
I just wish I could convince more people that loved watching Higurashi to read Umineko. I can mention it's done by the same author but I often see very little reaction after I explain what it's about and the similarities to Higurashi.

>> No.17989843

>>17989571
Higurashi is best experienced when you know what's going on. You get to appreciate the story from other character's points of view and appreciate the hidden stories from other people's points of view. for instance, Rena's POV in Onikakushi or how Rena, Rika and Mion or making up alibis for Keiichi in Tatarigoroshi. Plus, you can see all the foreshadowings sprinkled in, for things like Rika's time loop, Satoko's abuse or Ren's Depression.

Reading it while the story has been fully spoiled, really allows you to appreciate how Ryuu crafted the entire story before he started writing it.

I think Hanyu is the answer to how the meta works. If all the different fragments are equally real, why doesn't Hanyu bump into millions of other Hanyus from different worlds that decided to save their own Rika?

My theory is that there IS a real world, or at least an original reality. The sea of fragments exists on a higher plane as a realm of possibilities, but none of those possible worlds are actually real. They only become real when someone experiences them.

This means that Rika's world at the end of the series is just as real as her original world.

This also explains why Keiichi and the others experienced dejavus and unconsciously learned from their mistakes. They didn't remember anything from other possible worlds, only the ones that Rika went through. Because they had become real.

This theory explains Umineko in a way that doesn't contradict Higurashi. Ange's world is reality and there is a single truth, while the other possible results of the roulette are only possibilities that never happened.

Of course, if we accept the overwhelming evidence and conclude that Featherine is a real witch above reality and Ikuko is her avatar, that means the meta is also more real than reality itself and not only did the gameboards happen, the magic version of each gameboard and all the meta stuff with Beatrice also happened.

The point is that Ange existed in the real world (if we ignore the copy of Ange that participated in the meta in several games) and there isn't any world-jumping character like Rika in Umineko. All the fragment stuff happened in the metaworld, not in the real world. There is only one real world in Umineko.

Ange's different fates are implied to be part of Featherine's stories, meaning that they are real in the meta but didn't happen in reality like Higurashi. But I could be wrong about that.

Terrible. Yeah, it looks like it could beat the shit out of you, but it's not eerie or creepy. The face isn't that scary either. That body makes you forget it's a goat and makes you think of a bull or something. And the worst part is that it looks like a fucking asshole. You can't possibly sympathize with Goat-kun when he looks like that. The body and face are way too antagonistic and make it look way more mindless than it's supposed to be.

>>17992971
Second favorite, but I don't have a choice anyway since I love the original art and wouldn't change it for anything. The lack of eyes is interesting and makes it more mysterious. Goats are not supposed to be real characters with faces and shit, they are the most basic form of furniture. I like how the body kind of makes it look like a literal piece of furniture wearing clothes. But to be fair, the sprite is a bit weak. I fucking hate all that input bullshit in fighting games, so Princess is perfect for me. I want to be able to use the special moves of my favorite characters, that's the reason I'm playing OMK in the first place. And I want to be able to use them when I need them, instead of losing my chance because I didn't press the buttons correctly in a split second. Or randomly getting them to work half the time. Fuck that shit.

I get how that bullshit gives fighting games more depth, but that doesn't matter if you are playing against the machine or against another player using Princess mode. The whole "press down, forward, down, down, up, then do a half circle with the stick and fuck you if you play on a keyboard" makes most fighting games unplayable to me. I could master them if I tried, but I just don't enjoy doing all that shit just to use a special move. I find Princess more strategic and more fun to play. It rewards you for playing well, not for memorizing complicated inputs.

And it's not like it makes the game piss easy or anything. Hard mode is still pretty hard, but at least it's beatable if you are a good player.

Have them watch Higurashi anime, have them fall in love with it and tell them that Umineko was written by the same person as Higurashi, but that the Umineko anime happens to suck balls compared to Higurashi anime (and it's also unfinished), and that therefore they should read Umineko to see the true colors of the author.

Then you tell them in the beginning they can skip a paragraph if they think they got the idea (I've dropped Umineko twice because I couldn't get through the introduction; they wouldn't notice all the hints at this stage anyway).
Most importantly, you keep telling them the main part starts after the first episode. Just don't mention the length, let it be a surprise.

The pachinko sprites were made without love. It's for a fucking pachinko machine, for God's sake. They didn't give a crap about how lame they look or how ridiculously big the tits are. They look good animated and in most CGs, but as sprites they are complete garbage.

Sounds like the OST disaster in the old Mangagamer release of Higurashi. They cut a lot of the music and made their own tracks to replace it, but they replaced like THREE tracks with ONE of their own (they did this several times with different tracks), effectively reducing the total number of tracks and making the music sound really grating and repetitive after a while.

As far as I know, the music patches don't really fix the problem because they can only replace 1 Mangagamer track (assigned to several scenes that originally had different music each) with 1 original track, so many tracks are lost even with the patch.

This company is a fucking mess and I hope they go bankrupt. They always fuck something up.

What's the deal with Japan and the doujinshi scene? They seem to be allowed to do whatever the fuck they want without worrying about copyright.

Does anything like this exist outside Japan? If not, why? And why are doujin games and manga released as "professional" works outside Japan, even though that only causes problems?

Does anyone else feel that Bernkastel could have been a better character? She is amusing and I really like her, but I expected something totally different than what we got. It's slightly disappointing.

I loved Rika in Higurashi and went into Umineko expecting Bernkastel to help people in need and be a good person. But she turned out to be a complete bitch. She's a great character, but I wanted her to develop in a different way.

I know that she's not Rika. She is a meta version of Rika that received a big "fuck you" in Saikoroshi and never got her happy ending. No, actually... in Minagoroshi she claimed to have lost interest in Hinamizawa a long time ago.

I like the concept of her character in Umineko and how she became the main villain. She is fucking cool. But I'm still disappointed that we didn't get the actual Rika as a good witch, helping people with miracles and shit. I know it wouldn't make any sense for Rika to become a witch, but still. I fully expected something like that and never got it.

You said it yourself. Bernkastel was a huge bitch in Higurashi too. She didn't give a crap about that world anymore and only remained there playing with the fragments because she was tied to Rika. Once she was acknowledged as a different persona by Rika herself, she got the fuck away from that place and never looked back. So much for Hanyu finding a new friend.

Rika was never a meta character in the first place. She simply had meta-knowledge. So I don't see anything wrong with Bernkastel being the same sarcastic bitch as she was in Higurashi.

Bernkastel is gay and that means Rika is gay too. Unless Bernkastel became gay after living a thousands years and realizing that girls are objectively more attractive than men. After all, the attractiveness of a man resides in his personality and confidence. But Bernkastel is too powerful to be impressed by any man, so she is turned on by physical beauty instead. And girls are vastly superior in that regard.

Genji is probably gay. Why else would he be so devoted to Kinzo? Why else would Ronove be so obviously gay?

Rena likes K1, but she also has a fetish for cute things, which includes little girls like Rika and Satoko. She is a total pervert.

>> No.17996329

>>17996284
I don't think Bernkastel being gay would mean that Rika is gay as well. There does exist such a thing as situational sexual behavior, the most common example of which is men in prison being attracted to other men. She has probably been alone for a thousand years.

>Why else would Ronove be so obviously gay?

I've never actually thought of this in this way. Might be true.

>Rena likes K1, but she also has a fetish for cute things, which includes little girls like Rika and Satoko. She is a total pervert.

It's normal for women to find kids cute. Perhaps the anime and the sprites do a poor job of conveying this, but Rika and Satoko are literally 10 years old. They are little kids.
