So, I have discovered that kimonos are actually really comfortable, at least men's kimonos/yukatas are. Am I alone in this opinion? It's my understanding that even Japanese people (as noted by a Japanese friend of mine) very, very rarely wear kimonos, generally preferring western clothing in general except for special occasions.

So, on that note: general Japanese clothing thread, I guess.

Obviously athletic clothes as lounging attire is a new concept. At least in south west-east asia, loose fitting garments(with no underwear of course) were the norm for a lazy night. I used to have an Indian doti(?), which essentially was a picnic blanket you wrapped around your waist.

You know what doesn't look comfortable, though? Those wood sandals. Seriously I can't understand why they wear that shit.

I don't really care what people think about what I wear around the house. I guess you'd get weird looks wearing it down main street?

Mostly from what I've read online, the kimono has somehow become kind of formal dress over the years and isn't worn outside festivals and special events. It's kind of the Japanese equivalent of wearing a tuxedo, where it's normal at certain times but gets you strange looks if you're wearing it as everyday attire, I guess?

They're definitely comfortable. It's easy to see why Dutch men in the 17th century (only westerners trading with Japan during sakoku) started wearing them at home: They signaled their wealth and worldliness while still being pleasurable to lounge around in. See image.

There are some interesting robes. I don't want to get into the controversial questions of land-bridge origins etc. but they're more similar to Korean and Siberian shamans than kimonos in their design.

I practice Kendo and the traditional Gi's designed to soak in your sweat and weigh a ton. Some issues with tripping over the Hakama if it's too long but otherwise feels pretty good, like a giant pair of boxers.

The Doh and Kote is suprisingly light and the Men takes some getting used to at first but only restricts your neck movements and your peripheral range. I think it's better than most average Fencing attire in terms of comfort but after training it's basically wearing a soaking rag vs a stewing in a plastic bottle.
