Exhentai shits are what killed /rs/, I think. I've only gotten daily login "rewards" (~15-30 credits a day) and I have more than I can spend. (About 18000, since single rar files only costed about 70 last time I cared to download one)

I think ddl filehosts becoming worse is what killed it, really. Basically every other link from over half a year ago is dead, and it goes further downhill from there. Depending on what it is, some links die in mere days if not hours.

Even legitimate files get purged for no reason really often. I think it's because hosts want people to actively keep reuploading things both to avoid potential piracy complaints from copyright holders, who are now very aware of this kind of thing, and also force uploaders to upgrade to premium to keep their files around for longer.
Maybe they also see the trend where ddl piracy sites often offer premium and free download links, where free links die fast and premium often remains the only option, and try to cash in on this too.

I blame exhentai for the deletions. Filehosts deleting all of Saha's uploads within hours of him uploading anything started right at the same time as exhentai's meteoric rise to prominence on /a/. I don't follow ddl sites for anything besides H-manga and doujinshi, so I wouldn't know about this recent phenomena of everything being deleted. I imagine it is a separate occurrence, rather than being linked to the deletions of hentai that started many years ago, and were specifically aimed at hentai.

I wonder what the future of our communities will be. There is definitely an opportunity here for some enterprising person to innovate. I'm sorry, I think this might get sappy. It took me 6 years to realize that /jp/'s xenophobic culture is self-destructive. To you, not the board.

I've started browsing /a/ again over the past couple months and it has opened my eyes in a lot of ways. I had completely forgotten what it was like to talk with people about current events, since /jp/ never does that anymore unless you're an idolfag. Hype around VNs has mostly died or been stolen by other boards and we just don't have a lot of topics that have regularly available news to discuss. The two boards are a completely different experience for that reason alone, with /a/ being - from an objective standpoint considering the purpose of a forum - much better.

Likewise it also cemented my belief that moderation is the issue with /jp/. A lot of the random stuff that /jp/ was supposed to absorb so that /a/ could be just for anime and manga was, as we know, targetted by various janitors. Visiting /a/ has shown me that it has reabsorbed a lot of that content. Even stupid things like 'whose ur waifu' threads are in their own way a refreshing expression of the freedom to post whatever the hell you want as long as it's tangentially related to your board. That is so foreign to me after having been a /jp/ national for over half a decade.

The point is that you are the one keeping yourself stuck here in a losing battle. The janitors killed the board, but you - the you who is wanting to tell me to fuck off - are killing yourself with self-imposed taboos about what pages you can view on a website. I am extremely sympathetic to those feelings but now I can't see them as anything but silly. I think you should step back, away from the echo chamber, and look at what you're doing, what you wish you could be doing, and how you can do it.

I also think that if you're rooting for moot to axe the board so we can start over, the most effective way to encourage him would be to stop using /jp/. Maybe that's the best thing we can do for /jp/'s sake at this point, try to let it die as painlessly as possible.

As for other chans, 420chan has been established for years as an imageboard that isn't just a "not 4chan 4chan". It's very active overall and has a different atmosphere than 4chan, but due to being a niche board still it'll never compete with 4chan (even though they have about as many subboards as 4chan).

4chon.net too was very active in 2011 and 2012 and had great potential for growth, but due to its niche it eventually got trolled/divided and conquered too hard and STI basically gave up on it. It was also a terrible decision to name it 4chon instead of something original that doesn't make it sound like an obvious 4chan clone.
