There's this nice thread where you can talk about VN translations and their quality.

>> No.11971510

I finally decided to read clannad, but it seems there is an awful lot of shit going on around its translation.
I'm usually oblivious to VN translations status, teams and everything else since I'm more oriented toward non-VN japanese games (2hu, ero-RPG etc), and ITH + translation aggregator + my feeble japanese grammar/vocabulary knowledge usually suffice to get the message accross. But there are also occasional times where I'll want to read something in clear english, and I believe from its reputation that clannad is worth the trouble.

So I first checked vndb to see who translated the game.
>Doki Fansubs: TBA
>Drama Club: 2012-06-07
Alright, I went to that drama club website, first frowned at the "c o m i n g. . . when it's done" message and the raw translation files.
From the news, I saw there was an SVN repository, where instructions and raw files were provided.
>Last Modified: 2010-05-11
So not the finished one.
After searching on google, I stumbled upon Doki fansubs' website with a link to a 2012-06-07 patch. "I thought they didn't release anything?" I thought as I saw:
>Project transferred from Baka-Tsuki to Doki Fansubs.
So I guessed vndb was wrong and mistakes were made in the way updates were made.

I wanted to make sure the patch was completed, and after further researches, I ended up seeing some shit drama about a key documentary and someone apparently leader of the translation project who launched an illegal kickstarter, baka-tsuki re-taking the translation project, but then doki blaming everything on the leader and kicking him out of the project, then baka-tsuki working with doki together again.
I saw a thread on anime-suki with posts linking posts linking posts..., all the way until the trail stopped on a down website link.
The SVN repository is actually belonging to baka-tsuki(?) and not that drama something. So I end up at the same place as the beginning.
Although, from a recent post on doki's forum, I found out that the making of the patch is seemingly still underway and active.

At that point, the only good thing I found in all that mess was the english graphic patch made by an anonymous guy and linked on hongfire.
Anyway, I was already in a "fuck it" state of mind of and I just downloaded a torrent by fuwanovel with everything already patched, something I hate doing because it's the best way to fuck up with unicode/SHIFT_JIS/UTF shit. And I was right: after playing for a few hours without any problem, I reached some point where "Nagisa" was replaced by nothing, and the protagonist's name by "No valid string, make a ticket about it" (imagine how fucking annoying). I first thought it was just a random error, that patch isn't supposed to be finished anyway. But that shit kept repeating as I advanced in the story, to the point that it was unbearable to read "No valid string, make a ticket about ithas bad mouth, but he's actually a good guy".

So, I'm here with an iso of the full voice version of the game, the anonymous english graphic menu patch ready, and the "clannad-fv-patch-20120607" from doki ready just in case, and I still don't know if that shit will work.

Even if it's a sad fact, having to look up every other kanji for a VN as long as clannad is really too much of a pain in the ass for me. But I guess it's what I'll do if nothing else comes up. I also thought a few minutes ago that the fuwanovel version may have worked perfectly under normal conditions, so maybe I'll try changing from my japanese local settings (the irony). If you could upload your version, it would be nice of you.

>>11971557
Yeah, I noticed that the quality wasn't extremely good when comparing the voices and the text. But I'm personally more irritated by the lack of transparency of the translation teams. I find it contradictory with the goal of making the game known to the english community.

The fix to that problem was replacing the SEEN.txt file with a new one. Can't remember where I found the new file but I don't think it should be that hard.

That said, every fuwanovel seems to have these kind of bugs so unless you're ready to find fixes all the time you should avoid the VN's in the first place.

Does the non-voice SEEN.TXT work with the full voice version? I have a version that's still far from perfect but not as terrible as that, but it's from the unvoiced original version so it might not be compatible.

>>11971607
You have to distinguish fan translators from "fan translators" here. In the VN community, there are plenty of groups who pick up a project, sit on it for months or years, sometimes machine translate a couple scripts, and then end up admitting they did nothing. A long time ago, there was a badly coordinated project of people actually working on translating Clannad which reached 100% translation but with countless mistakes and a lack of editing. (The patch I mentioned is from 2008 if not earlier.) After that, the project just went from group to group with not much being done to it.

Thanks for the help.
I looked once more into everything after waking up, and I finally came up with a seemingly fully working solution.
Apparently, the translation project is currently under doki-fansubs, but for some reason, they didn't post any updates since the last handover of the project back in 2012-06-07, and the link on their website is actually a repost of https://web.archive.org/web/20130625225116/http://clannad.game-maps.net/download.php
so it doesn't seem I'll find a more up-to-date SEEN.txt than this one.

I'll post what I've done here so that if people asked again, they can find it in the archive.
1. Install the full voice japanese version of the game. I got mine from http://www.nyaa.se/?page=view&tid=184571
2. Copy the files from the latest TL update to installation folder: http://www.mediafire.com/?4d6f7w1uo484eb5
3. Copy the files from the english graphics TL: www.mediafire.com/?znzwyheqnyh
4. To make the game playable without cd (just mounting the iso doesn't work), open REALLIVE.exe with a hexadecimal editor and replace the first bits of those adresses:
Address: 002E9F10
From: 55 8B EC 6A FF 68 79 A6 AC 01 64 A1 00 00 00 00
change to: C7 05 DF 91 4E 00 67 44 F7 F5 C7 05 E3 91 4E 00

Address: 002E9F20
From: 50 64 89 25 00 00 00
change to: CB 95 BE A0 33 C0 C3

And here we go. I've done everything under japanese local settings, and it works properly now. It even added a voice replay button that wasn't there with fuwanovel's fucked up version.

Several years later, still unedited and original translation patch was removed.

Of course, those hints are only for the games we’ve already secured. That says nothing about what negotiations are currently underway with a few different companies, including one big name we’re discussing title selection with. What a beautiful year to come.

Its time for you to wake up and look in the face of reality. MG licenses more and more titles each year, and they expanded their staff trifold since 2012.

That's okay with me, because my life is angst and suffering. I also suck at actually getting through games so a short one is probably good for me.

hey /a/, just wondering if I can count on you guys to translate the Angel Beats VN when it comes out? thanks

It looks cool, but it's depressing as fuck. Better to look elsewhere if you want melodrama.

>my life is angst and suffering
You might want to avoid the game, unless you prefer to be drowning in depression.

You don't understand at all. It is impossible to emphasize with happy people while knowing only suffering yourself. Happy people dislike depression, depressed people dislike happiness because both are unnatural for them. Fish suffer in the air, people suffer in the water. This is all about who you really are.

I actually do.

Also I have no idea how accurate this is, but I'm looking at the tags on VNDB and I think it's interesting that all four games tagged "asexual protagonist" have a translation in some form.

My life is filled with despair and regrets yet I would like happiness over depression anytime.

>>11987163
I've played the game last year, and I couldn't handle how depressing it is. I guess I'm just weak towards depressing stuff.

>> No.11987288

>>11987199
That's certainly understandable. Perhaps I just have self-destructive tendencies. Either way, the fact that it's depressing has become a big reason for me to be interested in this one. I'll keep my expectations reasonable, plot-wise, but hopefully I like it.

I think of myself an optimist and my life is pretty great, but I prefer suffering>happiness in any media, every time. It's much more intense.

So Bokuten, Liarsoft titles, Euphoria, No Thank You, and some otome game.

Is this going to be the first year that mangagamer doesn't announce a truckload of nukige, or is that going to be their surprise middle of the year announcement?

What's with the excessive use of punctuation? Are you trying to emulate the style of that game's title? Or do you just overreact to everything?

Either way, yes. Don't like it, don't play it.

The only interesting game from that list it's Bokuten and *maybe some Liarsoft titles.

euphoria is the best game listed there, provided Mangagamer's actually going to license it.

Maybe this game isn't bad (story) but I'm not a big fan of nukiges with extreme torture, urination and scat.
I wonder if this year they will release Cartaga and maybe put some games from Navel in Steam like Oretsuba (PS3).

She snapped out of her chuunibyou libertarian mindset and is now so embarrassed about all the nonsensical garbage she posted that she's decided to abandon the Aaeru moniker and all associated accounts.
