Let's talk AJATT. How's everybody getting along? I'm up to 1500 sentences in my SRS.

>> No.1107301

how the hell does memorizing sentences help you?

why not learn the grammar and how the language is actually put together?

Doesn't it make sense?
Plus, why are you learning from a nigger? Everyone knows they can't even speak english right.

that post had NO substance. It didn't even adequately acknowledge the goal of the topic, answering why.

Oh, ok you could come out and say that he mentioned "context" and maybe even "so you're not thinking about grammar" but what the hell use is it to read billions of sentences, without KNOWING the grammar? You're not going to pick it up. How are you going to know what everything means?

It's easy as hell to learn from context. "building site" and "building place" is a fucking terrible reason to study billions of SENTENCES when you can actually learn what is going on, and then you can make whatever the hell sentences you want.

That entire post was a poorly-written attempt at motivating people to get studying, and in my experience, the entire site is like that.

No one fluent thinks in grammar when they speak. "DURR WHICH IS THE COPULA PAST PRESENT CONJUGATION I SHOULD USE." You speak by mixing and matching sentences you've already heard for your purposes. Everyone speaks languages that way. Grammar is a made up term for bored professors that want to make money from gullible fools, like you.

thats exactly my point. Nobody thinks of grammar when they speak. It becomes second nature.

Language isn't a fill in the blank puzzle, it's a living, flowing, being. You can't just say
______ は ______ です。
and fill in the blanks. That's fucking stupid.

Learn how the language WORKS, and then you can actually USE it.

>> No.1107459

>>1107290
Sentences? How does that even work?
I just take a word I don't know and enter it into the answer field. Then I look up the word in a japanese dictionary and use their definition as the question.

>> No.1107458

I'll agree that actually learning from the source is good (immersion, anyone?) but sitting down and studying sentence by sentence is dumb as hell.

Get a book, start reading, if you come across a word/grammar point you dont understand look it up, see how it works, remember it.
Don't just remember the sentence with the subjects and verbs removed. That's dumb as hell.

Learn, don't be stupid.

you seemed to be confused. with AJATT you aren't studying sentences, you are merely becoming familiar with them and what it generally translates to (just like immersion with context). you get these sentences from music, manga, etc; anything that native japanese use. use the SRS honestly and it will stick in your memory without any hard study.

so what you're saying is that my method of reading books is the same as this guy's method, except that he goes and puts the "confusing" sentences into SRS instead of simply vocab that he needs to know?

5-6 hours or more probably. The time element gets even more hefty as the reviews pile up. I spent 1.5 hours this morning just reviewing around 250 Anki cards. It really helps though.

>> No.1107520

>>1107513
shit, review can definitely pile up, and it can be a huge bitch.

Ive gotten to a point where I can remember 20-30 kanji by looking at them 4 times in a day. (more, now that class is done for summer). Once, just to see them, twice to get the meaning/reading into my head, three, to remember the writing, and 4 just to make sure i know it.

I'm talking about kanji vocab, not individual kanji.
I didn't have enough time off from class to do all RtK, so I just do what we learned in class

>> No.1107522

>>1107500
Almost the same but not confusing sentences, sentences you wish to know. Any sentence you wish to know.
Just vocab wouldn't work for most words because of the many homophones, so you'll need context, which is the sentence (in kanji/kana mix).

i miss one month of reviews and this is what happens. well at least i know which characters had shitty stories.

>> No.1107547

>>1107520
Well, the thing about RtK is that it is solely focused on the recognition/writing of the character and the meanings. The reason I can burn through so much kanji much faster with RtK is that the focus is narrower. Not having to concern yourself about the readings I think allows for a much easier approach to learning kanji because you're not always bogged down trying to associate meanings, readings, and writings/recognition in one go.

>> No.1107568

>>1107522
well I see. that...more or less makes....a tiny bit of sense. What you're basically doing is reminding yourself of the grammar point anyway (and vocab, I guess).

>>1107547
yeah, it's kind of troublesome with my "method" because my book just taught us a bunch of vocab, and the way they taught it was through the kanji. I know the "word" and the "reading" more or less....
It's kind of troublesome to make other compounds, but I was too busy that I couldn't do any RtK...

If i just had to remember meanings and writings, I could probably finish RtK incredibly fast. I already use the story method, except I dont use his designated "characters" I make up my own.

>> No.1107625

Studying grammar "rules" and vocab lists fluent does not you make.
I know, because learned I English that way in school.

>How are you going to know what everything means?
It's called a "dictionary".

>and then you can make whatever the hell sentences you want.
Like above, right?

And by "learning sentences" you get everything you need: vocab, grammar, kanji readings, a "feel" for the language. All the good stuff.
But calling it "learning sentences" is misleading. You're not "learning sentences". You learn to read (and write) Japanese and acquire fundamental language skills in the process. Though, sentences themselves aren't enough. You also need serious exposure to Japanese. That can be music, books, anime or 2channel. Whatever floats your boat.

>> No.1107657

You can't learn languages on your own.
Especially not Japanese. Learning a language is HARD. And Japanese with its thousands of moon scribbles is almost impossible to learn even in a classroom. What makes you think it's easy to learn on your own? How many think it's possible and try? How many succeed? Yeah, thought so.
Go sell your snake oil somewhere else.
