A couple of months, I've only recently broke a line of improvement though. How I used to draw the faces was that I've had the space between both eyes to little which made the rest of the head/body look out of proportion. I still seek improvement, but it'll take some good practice, I'm thinking about following some tutorials and guides, but I think I should be fine with the way I'm doing things.

He is likely meant skull structure. For some people its easier to figure out how head is formed, rather than copying someones style or potato shaped moeblobs.
Practicing on real photos lets some people to get more versatile.

You don't need to make a thick westerner lips, but you kinda have to know where they should be drawn to not look creepy.

Toweringman is the easiest example of an artist that draws on intuition rather than anatomy. One slight change in position, and it starts to look strange.

too many artists don't bother drawing the entire head and just draw the face part, then plop the hair on and it ends with no forehead or a way too large one, so at least getting the skull structure and basic face layout from 3dpd (where the eyes, nose and mouth go and their proportions/distance from each other) is a good idea.

I dabble in non-human stuff, but I don't tend to post those pieces, as they're usually supremely unpolished and not that interesting. Picture is something I made recently when people were talking about "progress" collages (never posted it because I looked at it and realized that there wasn't really any visible progress). They're all from the last three years, in roughly chronological order from top to bottom. I grabbed a bunch of camwhores' self shots one day and played around with (Vista's) Paint; you can sort of see the progression starting from the top left as I mess with different methods. I don't think there's anything distinctly "western" you get from referencing real faces unless you're going for staunch realism.

All you need to do for step one is DRAW THE LINES, you don't particularly need a book to tell you so. Chances are you aren't planning to become a draftsman, but reading a book on their craft would help in understanding the importance of lines.

On rare occasion I will work on a picture for more than one day, in which case it might exceed 8h.
I'd say I get frustrated more than bored, though my attention span is pretty much done at 8h.

Thanks. I brought up my courage to try contributing for the first time and was afraid. I'll take note of the lacking areas and try to add more content to them. But I don't think I can finish the art soon because I am very stupid at colouring. I have read guides but I always mess up on the hair and skin. It'll take some time grasping how to colour. The thicker line you used for the jaw looks a bit odd, since it's different from how the rest of the picture is drawn. It's like you suddenly decided to switch brush just for the hell of it, and did that line and only that line. It brings attention to the wrong place; you should keep it more consistent in the future.

Anyone here know anything about composing music?

I've been playing around with Famitracker for a little bit, I've pretty much got the tracker interface down and I can make some decent sounds, but I don't really know all that much about music itself. If anyone can recommend some guides/articles/whatever about chords, how different notes fit together, harmony, etc, I'd really appreciate it.

This is the best I can do with my limited musical knowledge (middle school band); I can only make melodies by randomly picking notes until I get something that sounds right, and googling chords. I don't even like metal, but I threw this together the other day. It's obviously incomplete, a total mess, has no musical structure, etc, but I like the way parts of it sound. This is embarrassing, but here I go!

It's always safe to start with learning music theory. For starters, read about scales and intervals. Understanding of scales is key, pun somewhat intended; with it, you will at least have the bare minimum to understand musical concepts, like why certain notes go well or don't go well with other notes, or why certain notes played in succession sounds right.

If you have the dedication and patience, learn how to read music (if you couldn't already). This helps tremendously, as a good deal of the available learning resource will require you to be literate.

And yeah, that piece you posted is pretty much all over the place. It's good you're trying, though, because composing is all about experience. You won't get very far from just reading books alone, because in the end, music is to be heard and felt. Textual records can only go so far in that respect.
