Here is some general truth for you all:

Visual novels are a tiny niche market on any platform where a small number of sales lost to piracy make a big difference. Blah blah blah. 999 sold 200k copies in the US alone (contrast ~30k copies in Japan). The first three Phoenix Wright games sold 780k copies in the US. Hell, even Analogue: A Hate Story managed to sell 5k copies in its first two weeks on Steam. There's a huge audience for visual novels, but you need to do marketing and shit to reach that audience, and MangaGamer didn't and still doesn't.

I supported MangaGamer. I've bought Da Capo, all of Higurashi, Kira Kira, Kara no Shoujo, Deardrops, even GoGoJapan. But they've decided it was easier to make money by going the nukige-only route JAST was going on until MangaGamer got their shit together. Sure, blame the pirates. The fact that MangaGamer is incompetent as a business and JAST is unwilling to change the status quo couldn't possibly have anything to do with it.

Well, it's okay this time. This time we're getting saved by import publishers discovering the visual novel niche, and we'll finally be getting VNs published properly in the West.

Problem is, only JAST and MG have any interest in eroge, so you're stuck with all-ages console games if they go under. Nothing wrong with those, of course, but it will limit the selection of titles.

The biggest problem with eroge and why it will never appeal to the western audience is that it mixes two elements that can not co-exist. You have these cute little cartoon characters that are seemingly targeted toward young children mixed with mature themes and adults scenes. There is no way to market something like that. Even in Japan it only appeals to a niche audience.

Take a look at 50 sades of grey. I've read a few screen caps of it around here and reads worse than a poorly translated nukige. If VNs got rid of everything besides the text and tried to publish them as adult novels I'm positive they would do well. At the same time if they got rid of everything targeted to adults and made them for children they would also sell well. However, mixed together they become an acquired taste that appeals to only a few.

Probably the cleverest, best written series of games ever made. And CAPCOM itself says there wasn't enough audience to even bother translating the second Miles Edgeworth game.

There are games that sold more on the first day than the entire Ace Attorney series has over years. That's the only kind of games companies care about these days. They aren't interest in publishing guaranteed cult classics just to cater to our niche.

I don't see why people believe something with zero QC in every other way would have any better QC in the translation, except that they're so desperate for anything with Rance attached to it that they rationalize the fuck out of it. With the difference in script size / translation costs, licensing fees, etc, Boob wars cost close to a tenth of the cost of either other game. Kara no Shoujo will need to sell twice as much to even break cover the costs that InnocentGrey spent to get the game in English (such as porting the game engine), and it likely will never pay off for either company. It makes sense that they don't want to do Cartagra. On the other hand, Boob wars looks like it might break even costs in the first month.

Non-Nukige: Harukoi Otome, Otoboku, Ef Second Tale, Two unannounced titles.
Nukige: Eroge, Slave Witch April, Orion Heart, SSSS: Super Secret Sexy Spy, An unannounced seal title (cheap nukige).

I count 5 non nukige, 6 nukige. Aside from the fact that they're doing almost twice as many games, it doesn't look like there's a huge shift in what kind of titles they're releasing.

Do we have any proof their two unannounced titles aren't nukige?

>> No.9967877

>>9967835
One of them's supposed to be something MG fans have been asking for for a along time, if you go by Doddler. I'm not sure people would ask for a nukige.

Some might.

How does that preclude it from being a nukige?

... Harukoi Otome has gameplay?

Deardrops and Dengeki Stryker had been planned for ages since they were Overdrive games. They were the last titles MG released before going full-nukige. Ef was an already-released fan translation and therefore doesn't count.

>Non-Nukige: Harukoi Otome, Otoboku, Ef Second Tale, Two unannounced titles.
Ef Latter Tale, again, is an already released fan translation. It doesn't count. Harukoi Otome is as much a gameplay title as Koihime Musou; that is to say, shallow gameplay existing only as a diversion for the massive amounts of porn. Otoboku does seem like an actual non-nukige for a change. The two secret titles will no doubt also be nukige, as was the case with every other secret title in MangaGamer's past.

It must also be noted that the only of the two secret projects we've had any hints of was announced in a blog entry about three nukige, and the guy who write it worked on that title as well as the nukige.

Wait, Sumaga is still being translated!?
I thought the studio got licenced and TLWiki stopped it.

Harukoi Otome is a flat novel, no gameplay at all beyond a handful of choices. The other games should be announced on... the 10th I think? I don't remember what con it is but they'll be doing announcements there.

<MishraServer> So, uh, if I understand correctly, official localization work for Saya no Uta hasn't even started yet?
* You are now known as VDZServer
<MakotoJAST> It just doesn't run in English locale.
<VDZServer> Ah, it's just an engine bug, not porting to a different engine entirely?
<MakotoJAST> Yes
<VDZServer> Mind if I post that on /jp/, where they are currently assuming the other option?
<MakotoJAST> Go ahead.

Jesus. Three fucking years. There's been a complete translation for three fucking years, and this is what's holding it up?

Actually publishing this shit is hard and involves a lot of back and forth waiting on mostly disinterested japanese companies. Also, Makoto was not satisfied with his translation (it was apparently rushed a bit to beat out some crappy kid working on the same project) and has revised it heavily.

I guess, but the deal was made then announced on /jp/ in, what, mid-2009? And brushing up a translation can't take that long. I'm not saying it's trivial, but most of the work has been done already.

Even if he retranslated Saya it wouldn't take three years. The VN itself takes like, what, five hours to read completely? It's probably even less than that.
