Lets talk about genres and content of visual novels, /jp/.

I've been recently trying to sort out how VN break up into genres on few different levels, but I've been having some trouble.

On the very uppermost level, we have the distinction between NVL and ADV. Then we have things like kinetic/sound novels as a subset of NVL, and dating sims as a subset of ADV.

Next we have broad content/audience descriptors that can apply to either, such as galge or otomege.

And then on the lowest level we have specific thematic descriptors such as moege, nakige, nukige, utsuge, and so on. Things like BL or yuri/shoujo-ai/whatever, too.

And kind of outside of this we have the eroge/all ages distinction, and hybrids like VN/RPG(or would those always count as subset of ADV?)

Does this seem more or less right? Is it missing something?

When you're talking about sound novel you're talking about stuff like Kamaitachi no Yoru?

You're giving away your newness, /a/-friend. You're using a hackneyed /jp/ phrase, but missing the underlying antipathy of actual /jp/sies against spoonfeeding.
How hard can it be for the guy to Google something? Even if he's utterly full retard, it shouldn't take him longer than half an hour to find something by his own effort, so it's not appreciated that he comes here and expects to be given a list.
Now please bugger off.

Excuse me? I got the 1mil get on /jp/ back in the day. If you don't know what it is, I suggest you go educate yourself before speaking.

...I don't know whether you're not into VN or haven't used VNDB much, but linking to it is absolutely unhelpful in any way whatsoever to the topic at hand and makes you look like you're just parroting something someone else replied to a related inquiry.
>>9946428
Actually it seems my idea of what sound novel is was completely misconstrued by associating with Higurashi and something I read on /jp/ a while ago, so disregard that. I'd actually like a definition, though.

Excuse me, but the curse of anonymity is that every newfag goober can spout shit like that. In any case, if you have nothing but white-knighting and spoonfeeding to do, you haven't ever belonged here. Seniority means nothing compared to how well you actually interact with those who belong here.

Is none of them a genre?

Well, genres, themes, labels, whatever then.

Then watch some videos of Kamaitachi no Yoru, it's a sound novel series.

Unless you consider Paperback and Audiobook as different genres, I'd say no, ADV and NVL are not.

Will do, what I know about it and the descriptions I can find of it and other stuff considered sound novels hardly sound like like it needs it own niche.
>>9946514
Paperback/audiobook doesn't seem like a particularly apt analogy, but fair enough.

I've been thinking actually same. Visual novels can be broken in many different genres and categories. Let's see

a) Ero level
1. VN exists only for porn
2. VN has "okay" sex scenes that into into story. Typical dating sim. It is normal to have sex in relationship right?
3. VN has "forced" sex scenes that has nothing to do with the story, like F/SN magic tanking.
4. No porn content

b) Gameplay
1. VN-RPG, like Rance
2. VN with some gameplay and mini games like LB or Tomoyo's after
3. No real gameplay, just selections.
4. No selections. Kinetic novel

c) Typical genres in entertaiment
1. Sci-fi
2. Romance
3. Fantasy
.
.
etc.. You know

d) Target audience
1. For guys
2. For girls
3. For horny teenages boys
4. For everyone

Anything else?
