I'd give it no more than two years until the critical decline, when secondaries stop coming (due to it not being "in" anymore: you don't latch on to a sinking ship if you want popularity/circlejerk) and primaries exhaust the original and derivative works. It's only downhill from there.

I wonder if anything will ever take its place. It's huge in its own niche. No, actually it has transcended the niche: I heard nowadays Touhou is a synonym for STG in the secondary/outsider circles. I'd like confirmation from people who have contact with umm... "outsiders".
