I'm a newfag at Visual Novels.

I've played Planetarian, which was good on its own, but I want to expand to more involved VN's. See pic, I'm thinking about jumping into Clannad.

Tips and tricks for Visual Novels in general? What are "flags" I hear about?

Save at every choice.
You should probably play CLANNAD with the 300 hour walkthrough on /rs/ so you don't miss anything.
Think of flags as markers you pick up depending on a choice or previous action that can change the events or conversations you experience.

Clannad is going to spoil you. And if you're a completest, you're going to burn out on it.

First play through is ALWAYS your own decisions and feelings.

Flags are just "triggers" that set you up for paths or certain ends. IE: the big forks in the road

Contrary to what you seem to think, some scenario writers can actually write good H scenes as well as good stories.

Play through nine times before using a walkthrough.

Each of these nine times should correspond to a pre 4.0 D&D alignment:
Lawful Good, Lawful Neutral, Lawful Evil,
Neutral Good, True Neutral, Neutral Evil,
Chaotic Good, Chaotic Neutral, Chaotic Evil.

Make your choices only according to your chosen alignment for the playthrough. If your particular visual novel allows name input, feel free to make the name match the alignment.

Rui wa Tomo wo Yobu has pretty damn good H scenes.

Most of PULLTOP's titles, like HaruKani, have decent H scenes.

Studio Ryokucha's titles have decent H scenes.

ef -the latter tale- has decent H scenes (making it almost unique among minori's works in that regard)

Actually, I'd say at least a quarter of my eroges do. In addition, a decent number of them (like Syarin no Kuni and G-Senjou no Maou) have H scenes that, while not fantastic, are still quite readable and generally pretty nonoffensive. It's just a fairly small minority, like Nasu's H scenes, the H scenes in some of Liar Soft's early titles and pornographic doujin works that have truly bothersome H scenes.

Get ONE, it's a nice VN. Protagonist ranges from being an ass to being a good person. Depending on which route you take, girl who can't speaks route he's a nice person, he isn't so much for the childhood friend route.
