Because the up facing sprites only show the character's back, while the down facing sprites show it's face.
Hence, they are not symmetrical.
Left to right is just like looking something in the mirror.
If you look at an upside down book in a mirror, it'll still be upside down.

There's an tmp folder in your save folder, use a nifty texteditor who can search through all files;
The CDATAN files have the names and saying in them.

If you edit them directly from the tmp in elona, then it will be changed for every character.

Have you looked at any of the games by Hachikuma ( http://www.hachikuma.net/ , Tohou Soccers, Defiant of Shrinemadien and Counter Attack of God Human Being )? I think they all use the same archive format.

I am/was working on the RPGs (looking for text specifically) but I never managed to figure out the file table even though I found various functions that loaded/decompressed/decrypted the archives (I even wrote a program to yank things as they are loaded.. but that would require way too much playing and would still need to be repacked). I'll check the email in the email feed and try to put some notes together if you want to help.
