Well they were in a weird situation with trying to localize to a large audience.

For example trying to leave kansai mannerisms on lotta hart would make most of the humor lost on Americans while at the same time giving her the southern accent but leaving the setting in Japan wouldn't make a lot of sense.

While you could say they "butchered" the series for the localization, I think they actually did a really great job.
I'm not autistic enough to do a side-by-side comparison, but there were definitely points where the localized version shined more than the japanese one. That's a rare thing, though
