Not a /jpvn/ regular, but I felt like posting this so you can point and laugh at my incompetence.

I wanted to try babbys first VN because I enjoyed VN-esqe games like Phoenix Wright. So I finally get around to trying out Yume Miru Kusuri and am clicking like a fiend. But as I'm clicking through classroom scene after classroom scene I figure that bullied-girl has zero personality, student-council tits is bland and uninteresting, and batshit insane girl is insufferable. Aya and the coworker were pretty cool, and Antoinette was interesting, but they aren't on the cover so why should the player give two shits about them!

Anyway, got the 'bad' ending, I think. Didn't seem so bad to me, though I hate how the game kind of says "you suck for not choosing a girl". Guess I deserve it for playing like a autistic retard. VNs probably just aren't for me.

The popularity of YMK is simply incomprehensible for me. The only reason I can think of is that it stems from a limited pool of translated VNs. Among the blind, the one-eyed man is king, etc.

But we discussed it for many fruitless hours and criticising it is really like beating a dead horse, therefor sage.

The only one I've played so far is Katawa shoujo but I have just started playing the Clannad game, which seems to be pretty amazing.
A friend of mine, who is a native, wants to play the original version but all I have is an English patched one. Does anyone know if there is a possibility to patch it back to Japanese or where to get the original files?

Flyable Heart isn't that easy to read unassisted.
The sentences are long and the characters speak too fast.
Of course you can guess everything that is happening without even reading, but if you actually read it'll take some time until you get used, if it's your first or second japanese VN.

Finally finished Root Double. That was quite the ride.
The individual routes had some major structural issues but I loved how the story was strucured overall, which allowed it to pose questions and answer them in the first half and then head to a very satisfying conclusion in the latter.
But going back to the problems with the individual routes themselves, I found the first half of Before virtually unreadable because of how it unfolded and how hard it tried to pretend that the mundane everyday scenes were important. Even disregarding the part where Before majorly spoils After, I'd recommend reading After first because starting out with that tripe would be pure torture. The second half was excellent though.
Double's RAM nonsense also took things a bit too far I thought but it also got me really attached to the characters, retarded as they were, so I guess I can't complain too much. Also, the integrating the reader into the story thing never fails to get me.

But man, halfway through Current I was convinced that this CG, and After's ending was actually showing Watase getting up in Natsuhiko's body to initiate another game of cat and mouse so I was really disappointed when it didn't turn out that way. Oh well.

If you want something similar to Asairo, Meguri Hitohira is basically the proto version of it.

This hasn't really been all that great so far, especially since the common route felt like
it was mostly guys talking about tits, which got old pretty fast,
but damn if this girl wasn't completely worth it de arinsu.
I'll never get tired of that way of speech and incidentally, it's also the first time I noticed 一色ヒカル could actually voice really cute characters, for some reason I've only encountered her in "strong" kind of roles in the titles I've read (Elsia from KoiKishi, takijorou in monobeno, Kurugaya in Little Busters, Yumiko from Grisaia ...) so that was really fresh.

The story was kind of all over the place, though. I've learned a lot more about this girl in another girl's route than her own, and at the same time the other girl almost didn't get any screentime in her own route as a trade-off (and thus not a lot of screentime in the whole game at all). It's weird when they make you read everything even if you're only interested in one or two characters.
Still, it's mostly enjoyable. I actually still got two routes left (the boring non-ghost heroines), and I'll at least read one of them and maybe skip through the other because I can't stand her, but the evaluation probably isn't going to change much

I didn't finish Flyable Heart but Renai is a lot easier. Though I did use a text hooker to look up words easier and insert furigana, the grammar in it was very easy to understand and the vocabulary is very standard so it's a good place to start.

I'm right here in the game right now, second chapter in case it repeats, I don't know and am wondering how much time is left before I come to a point where I can put it down to get some sleep.

It doesn't really feel like a harsh ntr game though. More like a general nukige that is trying to appeal to that fetish.

Depends on how much of a stick in the mud you are really. Many people who hate the real ntr games enjoyed it.

I think there are 2 ntr scenes with the older sister that's absolutely unavoidable. The rest depends on how well you play the gameplay portion of the game, but it seems that no matter how well you play, you'll at least get some additional ntr scenes. But depending on the scene, it might not go very far. (Like one scene is where the mom talks with the villagers, but before anything happens, the butler comes and kicks them out.)

Started reading Happy End Trigger. I think I like the concept of a VN that works with 3D engine still shots. Makes the presentation more dynamic, no need for tachi-e because it's all "event-CGs".

Unfortunately it was shit.
If was pretty fun at the start, unfortunately once the enemy princess appears the difficulty shots up really high, turning every battle into a long drawn out one.
There was also only one map which hurts the replayability of the game.

Also in other shchara game if I didn't like the gameplay I could at least enjoy the story. Not in this one, the story is severely lacking. There was a plot but it went nowhere, and the game is full of sudden developments that happen out of nowhere with no explanation why it happened. It's like they omitted a large part of the script. You don't even get a proper ending or epilogue.

The game as a whole feels unfinished.

I finished "Pure Girl" since people were saying that I really had to play it if I was looking for a short break game between heavy stuff even though I'm not typically a fan of school type games especially in combination with nukige.
I have to admit it was pretty hot to the point that it was unexpected. It was fun to play and read even if not much happens.

Surprisingly the two girls that should have been a free ticket to amazing (imouto brocon, exhibitionist school idol) were a bit disappointing to me. The other two came completely out of nowhere with the childhood friend + imouto chara + mouth fetish probably single handedly responsible for opening a new door.
The classmate route was surprisingly cute, and one of the few times I've seen a character flip-flop between sadist and gentle without seeming completely psycho.

Nothing really left from last month I was interested in at all besides Re:birth Colony, which for some reason people actively tell me to avoid. I guess it's backlog time.

Root Before Chapter 5. Can't even get through a chapter a day. Either my ADHD must be acting up, or this shit is getting ridiculous.

Oh man, Natsuhiko opened his mouth? Better cue a 10 minute flashback about it, showing in excruciating detail how he was "always like that," but make sure you write it in hiragana, color it sepia, and tell his voice actor to sound like a constipated squirrel (more so than usual), because that's childhood!

The only flashback in Route After? An embarrassed Tachibana wearing a skirt.
The tenth flashback in Route Before? A small novel about two kids finding a stray dog and talking about their parents' allergies.

It's like the director held back all the chicken sandwiches he wanted to cram in Route After, then had an aneurysm and went kick-the-can apeshit in Route Before. It doesn't help that the SSS in this route somehow takes even less thinking than before.

Maybe I'm the only one who finds this boring.

You're not. Root A and C were the best routes, Route B throws plenty of flashbacks at you (but I kinda liked it since it reminded me of I/O's C/D route while not being all the same), but Root D is almost entirely dedicated to flashbacks and it's the longest one too. Easily the worst route of the game and it's only redeeming value is that it manages to tie up the story, unlike I/O or R11.

Finished Futami's route in Itsusora. The whole wolf deal towards the end felt a bit cheesy, but it was an okay read otherwise. What bothered me the most was the lack of character sprites and CGs, especially during the battle scenes and the soundtrack isn't anything to really hooray about either.

I checked the walkthrough and it seems both San and Konome's routes unlock after the first ending. Which one should I play first?

I'd recommend doing San, then Konome. Most walkthroughs I've found online put Konome earlier than San, but I think the overall plot flows much better this way and I can't really see San's route as last route material.
Of course your personal heroine preference might influence the choice, I guess, Konome is one of my favorite eroge heroines.

Does anyone know what's going on with the Cross Channel Reprint scheduled this month? From the looks of it, it appears to be exactly the same as the PC version, but at budget price. I'm wondering if they changed anything, like upping the resolution or porting the 360 contents. I can't find the product website for the reprint though (It's being published under the brand "Cross(cross)Channel" apparently.

Mama Love is great, it's basically a reverse SekaiDame, story being that the protagonist, who is the usual teenager, and the next door MILF are secretly dating, then you have her daughter who is a tsundere just one year younger that the protag or his father who is pretty great character, it makes for some pretty funny situations.
The tempo and writing are great, the whole thing is just full of Maruto goodness.

Details about the Boys' and Girls' edition drama CDs got posted too. Contents look to be comedic/light, with Tesla and Neon getting harangued by the Fraternity and Sorority members respectively about their relationship with each other. But Neon's (the Boys CD) happens in a bridal salon and seems like it will involve her being made to try on wedding dresses, so I think we have a clear winner.

How is White Album 2? I usually dislike large amounts of heavy drama without an appropriate amount of content in between (such as Parfait, continuing drama was usually kept to the latter half of somewhat short routes, with some slice of life and normal interactions in between) but WA2 has received nothing but praise despite looking like the heaviest of Maruto's titles. Does the reward for facing the problems in the game justify the process? How are the characters as a whole? Are there any severe pacing issues with a game of that length? I'd like a mini review of sorts if someone has the time.

I saw that they're doing a rerelease on PS3, missed this one last year so I'm thinking about picking it up this time around.

Well... WA2 probably isn't the game for you. Everything after opening chapter is pure relationship drama with only brief pauses. It's basically a really, really well-done soap opera. The characters have some psychological complexity but that equals a lot of frustrating indecision, self-loathing, and dragging around guilt.

On the plus side, it's really well-written and nicely paced and the drama really hits you hard, I read through it in about 3 days flat.

Welp. Finally finished Root Double (aka Flash Backs and Repeat Scenes: The Game). Definitely a little disappointed as there weren't any big surprises and the climax was a bit of a let down. So after doing Ai's route in Tsujidou-san no Jun'ai Road, are the other 2 real routes more of the same? General consensus on EGS seems to be if I wasn't very impressed by her route that I should just move on. The option to change her hair color was kind of nice, but I was surprised that it ended up giving you a much better ending.

Her route just seemed to drag on way too long. If the other two routes are the same I probably won't be able to finish them considering the route guilt I got in Saeko's route.
Ah well, either way I need a break from that game. I guess I'll just play something in my back log and come back to it later.

Started reading Never7, since it looks quite interesting plot-wise, but I encountered some issues with the english patch.

- There aren't any movies playing when I have supposed to trigger them. They are playing properly when I open them with Windows Media Player, so I suppose that it isn't related to codecs. Or are they?
- The second problem is related to the font. It is quite odd-looking, even if it can display most of the things correctly, ecept ~. It seems that I can't even choose other fonts, since there aren't any to choose from in the menu. Do I have to run it with japanese locale turned on to change the font?

Amantes Amantes was thoroughly entertaining.

The only real point of criticism I have is that the city was completely uninhabited. I don't think anyone ever interacted with people not immediately concerned with the main plot. So every scene that depended on me caring about the inhabitants fell flat.
Luckily those are concentrated in the beginning.
