Depends on how lucky your are. You can pick pocket good stuff from other NPC adventurers. And when you get a high dex you can cheat at blackjack easily. Downside is joining the thieves guild requires oyu to not pay your taxes for a few months, which will get you killed in every town except one.

it's possible to get food from wilderness forests. you can usually find a few api nuts and wild plants that can be eaten. Api nuts also never rot so they're really nice. Be careful around Kolbolds or other humanoids. Equipment isn't factored into an enemy's difficulty, so they'll be much stronger then other enemies around their level. And yes, Hungry Demons are an extreme pain in the ass, but I don't think I've never been killed by one.

I've been making strength-based dwarf warriors and yerles/juere thieves oriented at perception and firearms. My companions always do more damage than me, even with a 3 level gap. Too bad they're not very reliable to kill the things that I'm running from.

So... wizards? I'll give them a more serious shot after the next loss. They seemed really bad to start out with, since spell stocks deplete so quickly and you have to read books in the middle of a dungeon.

Depends on the item. Blessed spellbooks do NOT summon monsters on you or drain your mana or teleport you around if you fail. You just get a "it's too difficult!" message. Blessed production tools increase your chances of success (like making food instead of charred/overcooked/smelly food). You get the point.

I personally like my juere archer. You don't get weight lifting, so you'll have to spend platinum on that, but who cares platinum are plentiful.

Other builds I've enjoyed: fairy pianist, yerles warrior, and juere claymore, and I've been trying to work out a good farmer build but I haven't been able to yet.

No matter your character, you just have to have priorities.
Archer: get a good bow and arrow with +hit and up marksman or get firearms and a good gun, get weight lifting.
Pianist: slave whore, Derphy's slave trader (NE corner) is going to be your best friend.
Warrior: pretty basic. Get good gear.

Any character you make should try to get as high a hit chance as possible. Damage is nice and all, but it doesn't matter if your hit chance sucks ass. My archer with his 2d4 weapon was killing things better with a 95% hit chance than the warrior with 4d5 and 80%.

God damnit. I hate this game's fame system. I went too long without dumping and now I can't go fucking 10 steps without running into a rogue gang.
I run three tiles, a caster uses a fucking explosion spell, my 2 escorts die instantly, 4 of my pets die instantly, 2 are left with 20% health.
At the end of the day I lose almost 12k gold just for walking from fucking Kap to Vernis.
Performance is the ONLY way to make money if you want to keep fame.

Maybe I'm just stupid but that doesn't seem to work. Trying to use the 'G'ive command results in the adventurers refusing to take the beer. If I give them beer in the trade window thing, they won't drink it. Throwing beer bottles resulted in a karma loss and the adventurer becoming angry and making mincemeat of my little girl pet.
