Any amount of citations will not really help since its not something that can be measured. More than 80% of people will not even make eye contact when walking by, let alone smile or wave or say hello besides old people and middle school/high school girls who like being silly.

Otherwise, if you can manage to break into a group you will be treated just the same as anyone else. Its harder said than done unless you join some sort of club activity or course or work together.

People just dont, spontaneously be friendly. Its like if you were playing a pickup game of soccer and some nice guy was standing at the sideline watching and looking ready to play, usually people would invite him, but I dont think Japanese would even look at him, let alone think about inviting him.

Yes, actually nicer than back home.
If I remember correctly this guy was drunk at the fish market and creating troubles for everyone.

Might just met the right people but the ones I meet help me out when I need them. I can count on them. Thats something very precious these times.

I've been here for... a week now.

At first it was very uncomfortable, namely the whole not understanding anything shit, but it's gotten better.

The employees in stores are generally patient with me, despite the fact that I have a bit of a hard time saying much of anything. And the eigo-speaking japanese I've encountered have usually been nice, so for now it's alright.

The biggest problem I have is more where I live. I'm about an hour away from toudai's campus, as well as 45 minutes away from my future research lab's area... but it's on two different lines (of course) so I'll probably end up paying a shit ton of money for my student pass.

But yeah sometimes I get looks but usually more because I'm a clumsy fuck in any country.

This is just a research lab position available to grad students. I'm in an exchange program with my home school. If you're any good though, you can try applying on your own, through contacting the research lab directly, then taking a special entrance exam 6 months in (what a German guy did).

There is a lot of basic similarities when it comes to basic words, but German grammar is just way too different. It's like comparing French and Latein. Both languages are related, yet Latein is way more difficult.

Definitely the case here as well. In my experience with talking to Americans the main difference is just how quick they are to act like a very close friend. It's an odd thing to consider 'rude', since it really is just friendly, but it's just generally not done here and I think the main thing is that a lot of the time formalities are skipped, which I guess is smiler to leaving the honorific off when first meeting a Japanese person.

Whether you want to call them occidental, I don't think too many will argue that, the whole area was colonies galore. But ethnically, not too many people are willing to let that sentiment fly.

I haven't asked anyone if they consider the Thai to be oriental or not, but I'm seeing a lot of resistance against the idea of seeing them as ethnically asian. Given the location, the neighbors, and the history, it's not entirely unreasonable to feel that way.
