Clearing a Touhou game with default lives, no extra outside programs (other than possibly vpatch to remove vsync but using it for NOTHING ELSE), and so on, without continues, is all abbreviated to '1cc' because it's a common first achievement to go for, and it's easier than 1cc No Extra Starting Lives No Outside Programs Other Than Vpatch But Just To Remove Vsync And Nothing Else (1ccNESLNOPOTVBJTRVANE) to type and say. Clearing a game without continues is technically clearing the game with one credit regardless of other circumstances, but to start with 7 lives or so and claim that it's a 1cc that deserves as much praise as a 1cc that follows the usual rules is faulty.

"Making the game easier" is screwing around with words. "Making the game's controls as responsive as possible" certainly makes the games easier if you've been plagued by the gross amounts of input lag EoSD and PCB slam you with. Its benefits will vary depending on the computer (rather, depending on how shitty your controls were to begin with), but only such that anyone using vpatch is given both optimal and equal controls. I've yet to see anyone justify calling this cheating though so I'm not sure why I even bother explaining why it isn't.

ZUN could have programmed it so that starting with extra lives makes it impossible to unlock extra mode, if he thought that didn't count as a 1cc. It unlocks extra mode, so it counts.

Other than in EoSD and MoF (which you can't even increase default lives on anyways), extends aren't based on score, so it wouldn't matter for survival.

And even if that were a tenable argument, why would you increase starting lives, then, if it just balanced out in the end?

If you're just going for a 1cc, score has nothing to do with anything, except in the cases where score grants you extra lives at certain thresholds. I don't think the score penalty is so severe that it prevents you from reaching all the thresholds even if you start with extra lives, though I haven't tried it myself, since I'm not a faggot.

Doesn't the multiplier only get applied at the end?

In which case it wouldn't make a difference. EoSD is the only one with selectable lives AND score extends, though.

Few months in grindinding IN on lunatic, trying to do at least 1 run a day, and I still can't get past stage 5 on lunatic (even with 7 lives, I spend it all on marisa, and keine, for some reason). Ah well, just need to do my reps!

Goddamit, I was almost close in finishing EoSD. Today I was finally able to reach the final stage, although shamelessly using continues. I tend to use the bomb only when I'm in 100% pinch which doesn't always exactly happen as I expected. Majoriy of the time I'll get hit because I let my guard down, I move to fast and all over the place or the bullet was shot damn too fast at me. In fact I don't like using bombs, my denial to use it is so obdurate to save my life. I can finish the first 3 stages in practice mode without using bombs though. The problem I'm having is connecting those stages together. Well wish me luck /p/.

Also do I get something if I was able to clear stage 1 in lunatic mode with no bombs? I guess it's normal stuff. Don't mind me, I'm shit with this game.

If you're really unlucky, the 4th boss in DOJBL will time out on you if you're waiting for the best version of his final attack (since he chooses them at random).

Is there a way to effectively deal with "Virtue of Wind God" on Lunatic?

For the most part, i've always half-assed it since hard mode, but i've never really found a method to go around it well...

In hard i lose like 1~2 lives or so, but when i get to lunatic, i just feel like im losing too many.

Marisa is certainly more difficult than most stage 4 bosses; however, the Giant Deathbomb Timer What Bombs at Deathtime allows you to be much less conservative with your dodging than you otherwise would, so it's actually not that much more tricky to dodge and get through with minimal resources spent than usual.

Again, took a break from SA and this time I 1cc TD with Sanae after 7 hours.
I only have UFO left then I'll feel obliged to play SA only until I clear it.

How much does one spend time in a one sitting play? And what is the considered normal or average? I almost cleared PCB just now although using continues. I feel bad for not being in the lunatic level, shit I don't think I could 1cc it either. I fucked it all up and started to use continues in Youmu's stage. Almost beat up Yuyuko in her last line of life but I had to fuck things up by refusing to bomb fest. I refuse to use that as much as possible, I'd like to dodge the bullets with my own skills and not depending on bombs too much. Heck, I refuse to even watch toho runs on YT, stream etc. I want to figure out the dodging and patterns by myself, it's one of those things that keeps the game interesting and thrilling I guess but I think it's more have to do with my pride as a gamer. Do you guys watch replays, get tips, read strategies for your advantage?

I have played only EoSD and PCB so far. I prefer the former since it's slightly fast paced more than the latter. PCB is fairly slow and it takes a long time to reach the last stages. I haven't really tried Marisa to her fullest yet as things are gonna be harder without homing but I'll give her a try soon.

I wouldn't worry so much about how other people play. Everyone plays for different amounts of time, everyone plays on different difficulty levels, etc.
Just play whenever you want, at a pace you feel comfortable with. I don't believe there's anything wrong with looking up strategies for certain patterns either; even if you know what to do, you still have to perform it.

Usually, 5 to 6 hours when I'm angry or frustrated. 30 minutes to an hour at best if I'm depressed and keep fucking up on stage one or two. I don't know about the average time but you should always aim for more. If you like fast paced games, try SA (or MoF if you're not a masochist). Stages in those games fly by quickly. And I wouldn't really say EoSD is fast because of that ridiculously long and slow stage 4 that just drags on, but compared to PCB, maybe it is faster.

I never watch replays when going for my first clears. I share and exchange ideas through replays when competing with someone.

With that said, I don't think there's anything with watching replays, at least not in a "cheating" sense. If anything, you're cheating yourself out of the experience of figuring out everything for yourself. If that's what you want to do, so be it.

I played bomb, skirtsniff and trance style from watch WR replay. I used about 10 boms or so. I have too many boms that i don't know what to do with them.
People say TD is hard because it has so little resource should watch some replays.

I can do it all day. Most people only spend a few hours.

You will find that not using continues will make you play better. Deaths stack. The better you are doing, the better you will keep doing. Also, bombing is part of your skill. My advice is to worry about limiting your use of bombs after you have cleared the game at least once.

All the fun of the game for me is performing it, not just learning it. Of course, you can't learn it completely without practising on your own. You will always be making your own strategies and improvising when things go wrong. That's just part of the skill. This usually depends on someone's personal preference. I like to watch as much media about a game as I can if I'm going to be playing it seriously, but not everyone likes this. You might find yourself at a disadvantage if you don't learn from others, especially with higher-level play.

I do. The "suicide" bullets don't make it much harder.

It did take me some time to come up with strategies for beating Tyrannosatan while not losing all of my lives, and the Extra is a bit on the hard side (I'll die if I'm tired and not on my game).

It only took me about 18 hours of play time to get to this point with DS. I've put about 60 into EoSD and I still cannot 1cc it on Normal.

Finally, I 1cc SA after one thousand tries. I can't believe it.
All that time I was playing with Marisa x Pache and from time to time Marisa x Alice but since I was going nowhere I tried the other characters and I did it with Reimu x Suika.
When I saw I was starting stage 6 with 8 lives, I became incredibly nervous and played even shittier than usually, I just spammed bombs
and didn't try to dodge anything.
So, I was very happy and all and I wanted to rewatch my fight and then the replay bugs and makes me die against Okuu. I can't believe it.

It was for a rarely used Finnish board where a silly challenge-thingy was going on.

I made several stupid mistakes in the run, which made it look like a first-clear of the game, aside maybe the conditions. Therefore, I joked about myself a bit by naming it in such a way.

If even one person in the world wants to watch me play, I would like to stream for that person. That alone keeps me playing more than I usually would alone, and therefore gives me more practice in the long run. Some people might have the motivation even when playing alone. Perhaps they lag when streaming and cannot play their best. It's all personal preference.

As to whether or not streaming is an act of circlejerking I do not care for. I don't even post my streams here, or anywhere for that matter.
