There was a pretty big shitstorm about all this when it was released. The localization group even added a page to their site explaining their retarded choices.

It's like they're unaware how many teenage weeaboos would buy this game if they left in the original names and Japanese references.

But they'll get more mass appeal. There are billions of people who loved Dragon Ball Z and Pokémon but hate Japanese everything.
Plus it's more accessible. They said they were following Phoenix Wright's example, and most commercial games are treated like this anyway.

The problem is that they think their market is the Phoenix Wright market, when it isn't. Either that, or they think that just by heavily localising something, they will automatically get bigger appeal. If they just did a faithful translation, they probably could've spammed it on /a/ or /vg/ a little, and gotten some decent interest. Instead, all they seem to have done is alienate potential buyers, while not really attracting new ones.

Really? According to their FAQ they say
"With very few exceptions, all uniquely Japanese elements have plausible context / explanations or make sense given the localization. This includes elements such as the timing of the school break, the presence of a Japanese shrine and shrine and castle, etc."

Well, I haven't finished the game (nor I think I'll finish it, it's a lame sim date without any actual dating) but so far nothing has been said about it, nor why there are typical japanese things like vending machines in every block and dog poo all over the place.
