What are some really well known/old fashioned Japanese songs? The only ones I really know is Ue wo muite arukou and Ashita ga aru sa by Kyu Sakamoto. Are there any other songs that if you asked someone from Japan if they heard of it they'd say "Yeah, that's a classic!"

And then there are the soundtracks to the classic 1980's movies. I am not really sure if this one was popular or not in Japan, but I need the sound track to this movie and I can't find it. These kinds of movies were popular in the 1980's Japanese pop-culture and most of the singers were well known too. You should enjoy it though.

I tried looking, but never found anything that could give me the name or title of the singer or song. Check on IMDB. Sometimes they will show the soundtracks or you could ask the Youtube uploader for the title. I don't have a youtube account, so I am at a loss.
This one isn't Japanese, but who knows if I was popular. Same song, just two different video uploads. Wanted to provide the original 1980's visual effects if you're into that (Like me) and the remastered footage. Ninja in the Drgon's den. In association with Sony Chiba's Japan Action Club.

You're asking the wrong people, we can tell you what otaku consider classics and little more. One thing I can assure you of is that every Japanese knows are The Blue Hearts, especially Linda Linda and Train Train. That's all I've learned from my animes, unfortunately.

Does an Italian artist singing in Japanese counts?

She is an icon of Italian music (probably the greatest ever) and she used to make versions of some of her songs in Japanese: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TgLkfs0kop4

I am especially fascinated with Showa era Japan.
There was certainly a great pride that can even swell up in foreigners that observed, and even today observe it. There's some quality present that is certainly difficult to describe...but I will attempt to do so anyway with the word "rustic".
Sure, the postwar era had the obvious fact that they lost a war, but somehow that did not affect them as one would ordinarily expect. Japan was apparently a laughingstock to foreigners due to exportation of low-quality technology. At this time, a Japanese transistor radio would be comparable to some crappy Chinese knockoff brand. (Allan Sherman, 12 Gifts of Christmas)
It was at this point, I believe, that Japan was Americanized the most. You have likely seen pictures of those young ruffians with the hug pompadours in this very board, erroneously described as yakuza. The same kinds of pompadours in 1950s America of similar ruffians.
This Americanization even influenced the popular music of Japan, transforming it into some flavor of rockabilly in enka. But even despite this Americanization, there still was a distinct Japanese emotion to it. I could go on describing the music, but to really experience it, you would have to have a listen yourself. So I'll just leave it at that there.

Holy fuck, they did an MTV Unplugged? Time to go find that immediately.

C&A are great. On Your Mark (which everyone should know already from the Ghibli video) is apparently pretty popular in Japan to this day, as is YAH YAH YAH. Two boys at the school where I work sang it in a karaoke contest, and for like three months afterward people were calling the one guy Chage or started singing "YAAAAAH~ YAH YAH, YAH YAH YAH YAAAAHHHH~" whenever one of them passed by in the hall.
