We'll never get those.

Currently, the UK has one high-speed rail line, and it's to France. High Speed 2 is taking forever, and it's going to cover four cities. It is estimated to be finished in 2026, which it won't be. The rolling stock hasn't been decided yet, but it'll probably be Class 373s or something like that.
We will have a nationwide high speed rail network by 2060 or later, by which time traditional rail will probably be obsolete. Older railfans will visit the UK just to see one of the last train services that don't use maglev. It will be seen as "quaint" and "British".

I hate that it's the 21st-century and Great Britain sucks at this so much.

country too big
most people in u.s. drive or fly so there's not a huge train ridership
they're trying to get a high speed rail thing going in california but making it will cost a fuckton and so it can't get funding. supposedly it needs 68 billion. won't be fully completed for at least 15 years and only goes san francisco to los angeles.
meanwhile airplanes just fly through the sky because they don't have to build shit and there's already a ton of airports

> and there's already a ton of airports

That's the problem. Airports cannot scale. You can't just keep building airports, and you can't keep building them bigger. High speed rail is an investment for the future. The problem is not apparent today, but it will be a big problem in the future. And that's without taking into account the fact that planes consume fuel, and it ain't looking good for oil.

In fact, the "high" speed rail that runs from DC to NY is one of the only lines that actually operates on a profit. It's very convenient for the riders, airplanes are terribly inconvenient in a post-9/11 shit-your-pants-scared America.

>> No.9810992

while screening is pretty lame and the fact i can't put most electronics into my checked luggage because there's a good chance it'll get stolen by some asshole, you can't beat the speed for longer trips. with that said i usually drive on vacation (within about 700 miles at max) because i was brought up on road trips

>> No.9812539

>>9810931
Thats because it almost takes the same time to travel that distance. Its the only reason the Shinkansen works. It acutally competes with air travel.
