Unless your country was still involved in the war/a war, the females were back out of the workforce at this time, roughly 50% of the human population. They came back in the early 80s and continued in greater numbers to this very day, strange then that white males are having a harder time finding work, white specifically becuase of the larger numbers of immigrants who move just to find work, or better working conditions and are hired more often becuase of favorable laws due to things like affirmative action.

With women in the line for work, businessmen foresaw an opportunity, a GOOD opportunity. Back in the days, men didn't really waste their money on useless things like fashion and such since they were mostly interested about their work/house and family, but women would a lot, especially if they were told that "being alone and independant is OK". So the plan was to give power to them while putting them in competition so they would need more money to show their worth. A woman not in the house is a woman that the market can exploit.

Just think about it for a second. Women nowadays are either working as "strong independants businesswomen", money for society, or even if they're single mothers law will allow them to steal >50% of their husband income, which means more money for society again. An interesting fact is that the people living in the streets are mostly, if not all, men.

One big reason is "everything is made in china".
Fucking everything. Even pharmaceuticals and fine chemicals. Which is quite annoying since these are high value items anyway, so you aren't actually saving much by going to china.
But, the feedstock low value chemicals are made in china so you save on transportation costs.

I'd say that's what it comes down to. Transportation costs. Technology needs to be working on cheap transportation if we are to survive as a species. Even if it's cheap and highly efficient batteries in ships and trucks that can be charged by the nearest nuclear power station.
Or maybe, when transport costs get a lot higher than they are now (give it 30 years), importing and exporting become prohibitively expensive.

This system, worked in the past because companies were not giant conglomerates. People would get paid, and their money would go to many many different business, to many many different people. The local barber, the local grocery store, the computer store, the local petrol station (let me explain this one.)
