To be specific, it was great if you watched the first half of the series. The LN and VN are a different cup of tea altogether (and a whole different genre), but the second half of the anime is a cheap attempt at shoehorning in some romance and drama at the expense of the plot, the characters and the viewers' eyes.

Yes. Not only that, but every attempt made in the second half at saving the series by bringing in the other characters only made it worse. If they'd kept Kirino and Saori out of the picture, we could've fooled ourselves into believing that they were still proper characters. But no, they just had to be mangled to fit with the "drama" direction the show took.
The first half was fun while it lasted, but sadly, that wasn't long.
