I never understood the East-West description of geography.
It seems arbitrary, like the mnemonic 'lefty loosy, righty tighty' for taps and valves.
You can't have a 'rotational' descriptor in left-right or East-West terms.
It all comes from London being the centre of the known universe and we're left with this stupid description of geography.

Thank you for reading.

My teacher in Grade 1 said something like this once.
I couldn't express in language at the time that it was arbitrary and stupid, but I was angry for some time - angry enough that I remember it to this day.

Valves have a tendency to be turned on by twisting them left and off by twisting them right. Same with pill and bottle caps, they tend to be twisted off to the left. Some kids have problems remembeirng this, thus the saying.

It should be 'anticlockwise: water flies; clockwisey, very drysey'.
Original mnemonic, do not steal.

I'm 25 and I still get confused. Left and right are quite arbitrary when it comes to rotating things, though in general I figured out that it's measured along the top arc, if the axis of rotation is horizontal or along the arc further away from you, if vertical.

Well then, the hands of a clock spin the same way as my dog used to spin when I fed him as a child, viewing from above.
